The workshop is now home to a new (old) metal lathe. This model of lathe is a 9-inch South Bend from 1926. It sat unused for many years and needed a complete overhaul to be operational again. Luckily no components were broken or badly worn so the restoration was a straightforward one. It even came with the original countershaft. Since we are progressing towards building a line shaft-powered shop in the future, this was an important addition. A temporary countershaft was made to run the lathe from an electric motor until the line shaft is installed. It is a fairly barebones benchtop lathe, but great for a beginner machinist like me. I plan to use it mostly for making replacement parts for other machines and ornamental die-making for the forge.
