Antique Rusty Cleaver Restoration - Full Restoration | Mister Patina
In this Video i‘m restoring an old rusty cleaver, i bought it online from a random guy. The cleaver was a smithed one piece. As i wanted to reshape the handle, i cut a little to deep and destroyed it. So i had the idea, to build a new one :)
I started with reshaping the blade, because it was in a very bad, used condition. After that i had a little fight with the rust, an electrolysis bath was the best choice i guess. Next step was building a new handle, i used some wood, metal and brass/aluminum bolts for it.
I think it turned out pretty nice, i hope you guys enjoy :)
If you have any questions or suggestions, you can write an email, i try to answer asap.

It’s ok. I think you should have welded metal onto it and done traditional style wood handle. This will be hard to clean and will rust easy.
@misterpatina

Thanks for your comment Josiah! I thought about many ways of putting the handle back on the plate. As I don’t have a welding machine in my homeshop, this wouldn’t have been an option. So I decided giving it the „decoration“ style and used those, imho, nice looking brass bolts and rivets :) I hope you enjoyed anyways!

As an ex chef I can tell you balance is everything with a cleaver. You need it so you can use the middle to cut through a cow's backbone and then nick the sinew on a T Bone with the tip. This looks pretty well balanced to me. It’s when expletive go OTT customising the shape it all goes wrong. Well done.

Hey Mark, pretty cool to hear that from a real expert! It weighs a little bit more than before, but like you said, the balance is better. Thanks for watching!

I assume you re-tempered the blade. I think you should have taken a bit more off the heel and toe of the blade. The belly still has a shallow spot. You took a junker and made it serviceable. I could see you revisiting this one later and doing ALOT more grinding.
