Long ago I had a Planet Jr planter. It had a chain drive and interchangeable, non-adjustable cylindrical seed plates. I wish it had a clutch because the chain was given to jumping off the sprocket if you rolled it backwards more than a couple inches. The adjacent row marker/follower is a nice touch on yours! When we planted corn with a tractor and 4-row planter we had a length of steel pipe strapped to the weight blocks at the front of the tractor. From the end a chain dangled and you'd put that right over the closest furrow of the previous pass to keep the row spacing correct.

I come from a farming background and am age 59, my father was a farmer and would have been 80 this year. Machines like this were laid rusting around farms in the UK when I was a child. I think it is a machine for planting root crops like turnip, carrots, sugar beet. Certainly, a type of crop grown in rows. Unlikely to have been used for cereal crops like wheat or barley. They might have been used maybe 100 years ago on small farms and in horticulture in the UK.

Excellent restoration, as always. Looking at the holes in the front wheel, I think there should be small spikes in there. Otherwise, that wheel may slip too easily. The spikes really help to keep the wheel turning. Even in pictures of other old, restored machines, you can see the holes but the spikes are often missing. To make this machine function reliably, spikes may be necessary. Those holes are there for a very good reason !!
