Two antique telescopes - one pocket telescope from around 1880-1910, and a larger naval/maritime telescope, from around 1850-1870. These were among my more interesting restoration and repair projects!

The larger telescope in your video looks like my telescope. I've been trying to research and date it, but this is the only likeness I've been able to find (limited search online) Yours also looks immaculate. The leather on mine is brown and hardened and the binding has completely come loose. Which I can only assume is from countless sea battles and adventures.

It should be pretty easy to replace the leather, should you wish. You just gotta find the right size and thickness, trim it to the right measurements and glue it on. That's about it. The leather is there to make the telescope easier to grip with wet hands.

best way to clean anything made of brass is thing called " peak " it comes in a can like can for paint small one (not spray) it looks like nivea hand cream and its blue , you take a cloth put a little bit of it on it and you scrub really fast once it gets darker you wipe it of with other cloth , there is nothing better then Peak for cleaning anything made of brass on the hall earth , every cleaning company uses it , wd40 doesent lubricate it cleans and then it could eventually get really hard to pull draws out , and sawing machine oil is same like lift cleaning oil (absolutely the same ) and it gets it vary easy to draw BUT that oil itself is what is making the dirt in draws over time , trust me i know i have a telescope and i am in industrial contract cleaning for a quite some time.try it you have nothing to lose and everything to gain but you must apply it as i instructed otherwise it doesent work properly

I have a brass telescope which is 23-1/4" in length, and has three draws. The first section is beautifully engraved with the owner's name, as well as the words "Cincinnati Special". My Mother, who gave it to me is presently 94 years old, received it from her parents. Oddly, she does not know the person whose name was engraved on it. I really appreciate the instructions which you gave regarding the cleaning. I am sure this one has not been cleaned in a very long time, and it is somewhat stiff to use. I've used the techniques which I've used to clean the telescopes I have, on quite a few by now (probably over half a dozen, and growing). So far, I haven't had any bad results. You just need to be careful, since of course, these things are antiques. Don't use any force until all the grime has been properly cleaned out.

What method are used to clean old lens?

Warm water and soft tissues will do. If there's any gunk or grime on the glass, some methylated spirits can be used. But nothing abrasive.

You can use 0000 to polish glass with out lube 😇

Also heard you can use 0000 steel wool and no h2o

0000 steel is fine for polishing the brass (you can use oil to lubricate it while you do this), but not on the glass.

Mine came looose! i twisted out and the peices where fallen out and now I cant for the life of me put this thing together! Is there a diagram for these things because I cant find one online anywhere! help!!!

Most of them just screw back together. All the couplings and lens-housings etc, should be threaded.

@@shahancheong9792 Thanks I figured it out. then I had to learn about the Plano Convex lenses to figure out which direction they all fit in sequence in order to produce a better image. What a day.
