Memories... Case Model L was our primary tractor on the farm until about 1952. It looked like this one (I think the rear steel wheels had a spacer added to increase the distance between inside/outside lugs). The steel ribs on the front wheels were worn much shorter than these. Yes, it was always hand cranked. Three speed transmission - no "road gear," 1 reverse. Hand clutch handle on the right side, with transmission driven belt pulley (8" flat belt) inside the right rear wheel. We mounted a pulley to drive a grain grinder, grinding feed for cows. It had a hard metal, dish-type seat. Nearly all operating of the tractor was done standing. No PTO, no hydraulics, no brakes. We built a canopy over driver station. It had no lights, so we built some. We mounted an generator over the belt pulley for power. Lights were mounted in the front (2), and rear (1). Turning on the lights meant mounting the belt. Obviously, when the tractor stopped, the pulley stopped and lights went out. But, they provided lighting for night time operational work. The magneto work at about 11:00 was common maintenance. We tore it down for ring/barrel/bearing work about every two years. I think it ran at about 1,350 rpm. Long stroke on the engine design meant good torque, 4 cylinders. I have two poor quality pictures of it working in the field, that is all. It was used for plowing, 3-16, at about 3 mph. We also pulled a 9" disk/harrow/roller, blacksmith harrow/roller. Do a Google search "Case Model L" and you will find some pics - some in steel wheels, others in rubber tires. Yes, I would like to see one in person. I drove it only a short time before it was replaced. When it was used for plowing, I was on Case Model DC for harrowing/rolling in breakdown. It was replaced by a Cockshutt 40, 6 cylinder Buda, live PTO, hydraulics, 6 speed F, 2 R, rubber tires (38").

One thing I wanted to mention for your younger viewers that my grandfather taught me. When pulling an engine over to start it, never grab the handle with your thumb on the other side from your fingers. When it kicks back you may get your thumb broken. Great video and good luck with that majestic tractor.

It surely has sticky valves, which can be coaxed free with WD40 or similar. On the ignition, in addition to setting the points, if you clean up all the wires and their connections with emery paper - to get maximum voltage and reduce resistance. You will then get a fatter spark and the tractor will start on first kick......even on cold nights.

That's a really cool tractor, and great to see your dad warming up to the camera a little. I did think the second you started filming the dog it was going to start right up, so we'd miss it. Also hope your chicken bounces back, it can be rough caring for animals when your not sure what is wrong, and what might help, but it seems like your doing what you can.

On the valve clearances.. a good rule of thumb for older Case tractors (until they've been run for a while) is .020" intake and .020" exhaust. Take some WD-40 or your favorite rusty-bolt-lubricant and spray it around all the valve stems and tap each valve (rocker arm on the valve side) with a plastic hammer to make sure they're all working freely before you try to adjust the valves. This will ensure the valves are closing completely. If they stick open when you tap them, you may need to soak the valve stems again and wait a day or 2 before you try again with the plastic hammer. Here's the specs for the L series engines: www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/000/4/5/450-ji-case-l-engine.html The LA has the same engine and you can get valve clearances and other pertinent info here: www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/000/4/5/451-ji-case-la-engine.html Hope this helps!😁 Also, the magnetos on these are pretty finicky, so the points inside need to be spotless and gapped correctly, and maybe replace the condenser while you're in there, just to be safe. *EDIT:* I noticed your Dad actually *did* adjust the valves, so he may need to back them off again to check if they're closing properly!😉

Great idea of putting the plywood down to catch any oil leaks. Your dad isn't afraid of tackling any projects, I like that plus he isn't gun shy anymore with the camera. Dr. Tara the chicken lady. I like that white Coop, I want to get my wife one of those white Chicken Coops as when we lived on the farm we had chickens, ducks, and geese but we can't have chickens, ducks or geese in town as they have a ordinance of no fowl even if there contained even a double fence around the Coop and a fence over the top. The chickens that are sick have you tried chicken noodle soup lol. Love your videos Tara, what company will your grapes go to and what wine will they be in ?

The bad thing is the tractor didn’t start the good thing is your dad got a lot of exercise! Just keep chasing the three essentials fuel, air, spark! Sometimes when I have something that’s been sitting for a really long time I will pull the spark plugs and spray carb cleaner or Little start fluid and each spark plug hole and that will tell me if it tries to start that the mag works. Almost always win a gasoline engine has been sitting for A while the carburetor will have problems because fuel will varnish (basically go bad). But anyway it looks like the wants to run because it popped a couple times it’s just a matter of time! Just show it when it’s running in another video! And that CASE Will be closed .😊 good video wine and cheese for you tonight !

I just found you today and subscribed after watching for awhile. I follow several farming channels, and I must say yours is unique. I've been a collector of antique farm equipment at various times in my life. The Case is cool! Is your Dad also into vintage equipment, or is he just messing with this one tractor for fun? Adjusting the valves on old engines is almost always guesswork, even when you have a manual! Anyway, thanks for providing a farm channel unlike any other!~

I had a 1949 Case SC that my Grandpa bought brand new. I sold it last March to a friend. It still has the original rear tires on it and they have about 60% of their tread left. I would take that to mean that it doesn't have a lot of hours on it. I will post a video of him with it this spring.
