Last night, me, my eldest brother, and our father went for an evening walk with our dog. It has been raining a lot recently, so as a result, the giant palo verde beetles have been emerging and flying about at night and they are a sight to behold. You could almost mistake them for a small bird they're so big and I even heard one buzz by my ear. To fly as an insect seems it would feel like a completely different experience than to fly as a bird.
@grijzekijker5 ай бұрын
To me the flight of these beetles looks clumsy and fragile like the first manmade flying machines, whereas birds fly more agile and controlled like today's private jets, Cessna's and Gulfstreams.

Amazing shots! I notice that all of these beetles fly with their elytra outstretched…don’t some species fly with their elytra folded back over their backs? Like some flower chafers? IDK maybe I am misremembering. I love the subject of insect wing folding-both the deployment and the re-folding after landing. So much is going on to deploy the wings including the elasticity of resilin helping spring open the wings and prevent wear and tear. Plus insect hemolymph “blood” pressure helps like hydraulics to further unfurl their wings. All that in addition to the obvious inertial components from the first few flaps are happening simultaneously to deploy their wings. Then there is the refolding afterwords. There is a bit of memory involved in the origami crease pattern and many beetles use abdominal stridulations against closed elytra to tuck their wings back into the sub-elytral space. Some cool papers on this process where they cut off beetle elytron and attach a transparent artificial one to watch the folding process. Would love a slow motion video where you do something similar. And we haven’t even touched on the different origami-like folding patterns themselves! Rove beetles in the staphylinidae family have shortened elytra and more maneuverable abdomens so they use their abdomens to fold their wings while they are overlapped for a unique and extra compact asymmetrical folding pattern. Would love a slow-motion video on that! I really wish I could find grad schools studying this sort of thing. Cheers!

Super video as usual. I just had to watch after seeing a Tiger Beetle taking off in the title frames. I often try to photograph another species of Tiger beetle, with little success, because of the way they can instantly take off as soon as you get too close. Meaning my whole crawl along the ground, was to no avail at all.
