Antoine Walker & Paul Pierce: Stuck between 2 historic Celtics eras | Disregarded Duos by FPP

Forgotten Player Profiles

Күн бұрын

Post Larry Bird and Pre Big Three, The Boston Celtics had one of the highest scoring duos in the NBA in Antoine Walker and Paul Pierce. These two took some time to get to the postseason, but when they did, they gave the fans some very memorable moments. Unfortunately, they weren't able to secure a ring together, but would each finish their careers with a championship. They were two players who could fill it up, and one who would shoot as many times as he needed to do so in Walker. But even being two ball dominant, top level scorers, they remained friends on and off the court throughout their partnership, which is refreshing as most duos like this crash and burn.

Does anyone else think Pierce is underappreciated? He's in the HOF, which he deserves, but it feels like he doesn't get enough respect when the best SG/SF are discussed. I grew up watching him at Kansas and very quickly realized he's the real deal. I knew his talents would easily transition into the NBA. The battles between him and Lebron in the 08 playoffs won't ever be forgotten. They went back and forth, landing haymakers. His nickname fits him perfectly because nobody could handle the Truth.

He was, because back then all espn will show you are dunks and crossovers, now side steps, step backs, hesi are as popular as dunks. No one really outside of the celtics fanbase understood Paul Pierce game back then. Even to this day kids only knew Pierce from the big 3 era or re-runs from 2008, but Early 2000s Pierce had everyhing expect for the 360 dunks.

Rick Pitino RUINED the franchise with a ripple effect that lasted almost a decade. I remember so vividly as a young teenager being stoked about him coaching in Boston. We also had the best chance in the lottery at drafting #1 overall in 97, Tim Duncan, and we also had the Mavs FRP which was the odds on favorite for the 3rd pick. The ping pong balls landed almost in the worst possible spots. We got 3 and 6 overall. Chauncey Billups n Ron Mercer. After not landing Duncan, Pitino just went nuts trading player after player. Still cant believe he didnt draft TMac at 6 but it wouldnt of mattered as he likely wouldve traded him aswell. He shipped Chauncey out his rookie season even though he showed promise for kenny anderson, who was undersized n bad defensively. I remember he gave Travis Knight a huge contract for a backup big lol. At least Pitino drafted Paul Pierce though 😂😂😂 even he couldnt mess that pick up. Dude literally fell in our lap at ten

Pierce was one of the most skilled player from that era, while kobe, tmac, VC exploded into the mainstream, Pierce silently put up big numbers, wasnt as explosive but he had the footwork, bb iq, variety of moves. Antoine in my opinion is the 1st big man with legit guard like handles, he had court vision, he had inside outside game similar to Pierce. Ainge wasnt a fan of Walker's game, traded the entire team when he became the GM, but prior to Ainge I wish they kept Joe Johnson and Chauncey billups.

@@dsg3053 😂 here comes the "i know basketball better " dude. Magic is pg, obvioulsy more effective handles , but antoine handles closely resembles the modern nba offense, you never saw Magic do the hesi - cross for a pull 3. Bird another big with handles, again more effective but isnt as flashy as Walker. Hakeem, KG, CWEBB, Ralph Samson, can navigate the court with decent handles but most operates their offense from 20 feet to inside the paint, Walker operates from beyond the 3 point line. Watch some Antoine Walker not the most efficient and effective but showed flashes of what the nba would become. His game resembles Carmelo anthony before melo was even drafted.

Thanks for posting this duo!!!🍀🍀🍀 Uggggghh Toine will always be a "what if" player to me. Walker was really a bit ahead of his time. His handles were really good for a PF, he was an excellent passer, and a good 3pt shooter. He was at his best attacking the hoop and playing with pace. Unfortunately he fell in love with the 3pt shot, and he became lazy n undisciplined on and off the court. He had the potential to be a hall of fame player, his first 3/4 seasons in the league gave every indication of this. Sadly he basically peaked as a player at around 25 yrs old. He gained weight and was never the same losing speed, athleticism and quickness. He became a role player basically for the rest of his career after his stint(s) in Boston. Wouldve loved to see him reach his potential, which we all know Pierce seemed to do. They were alot of fun to watch, and played well off each other. That Pacers series in the playoffs brings back some fond memories. Thanks for the content ✌🏻🤙🏻

Look at any of these guys who end up with their college coach in the NBA. Recent one being Hayward. I don't want to say one way or the other. But maybe this kind of thing can easily go south and stunt someones career like Mercer. Then he moves on (or the Celtics change regimes) and he only knows how to play for Pitino. Just my two cents as I had thought the same thing.
