Forgotten Player Profiles

Жыл бұрын

Detlef Schrempf moved from Germany to the US to attend his senior year at Centralia high school, this kicked off the beginning of the first truly great success when It came to European NBA players. Schrempf played 4 years for the University of Washington Huskies, where he helped lead them to their first tournament appearance in almost a decade, alongside fellow German Christian Welp. Schrempf was selected by the Dallas Mavericks in the 1985 NBA draft where he was stuck behind established players like Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman and Derek Harper, and even though he played on some great Mavs teams of the 80s, he never got a chance to show how good he was.
But when he was traded to the Indiana Pacers in 1989, he finally got a chance as he would team with players such as Reggie Miller, Chuck Person and Rik Smits in a sixth man role, where his stint with the pacers would see him win back to back sixth man of the year awards, as in 1991, he became the first European to win the award. He also gained his first All star selection in 1993, again becoming the first European NBA all star in history. He was eventually traded to the Seattle Supersonics where he had his most team success as part of the great Sonics teams of the late 90s that included Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp and Hersey Hawkins which culminated in an NBA Finals appearance vs. Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman and the 72 win Chicago Bulls. Schrempf would also rack up two more all star selections in Seattle. Schrempf spent 2000 and 2001 on the Portland Trailblazers in a bench role, where he would join another legendary European in Arvydas SAbonis, before callin it a career after 16 seasons in 2001.
And when it was all said and done, Schrempf had an extremely successful career full of accolades and a 10 year stretch where he averaged over 15 points on over 47% shooting every season. And a career like that needs to be talked about, so that’s why today’s video is looking at The Grand Teuton, Detlef Schrempf.

Yeah Schrempf is not being given enough credit for his role in promoting the game in Europe and Germany in particular. He went to the US really early and thus was kinda forgotten by the German public. His popularity was not comparable to Dirk but as you said, he walked to Dirk could run.

I loved him on the Sonics. Nowadays we hear so much about the impact of foreign players like its new. But in my childhood/ teens there was Vlade, Marcilonis, Hakeem, Smits, Shrempf, Petrovic, and Manute Bol. All impactful in some way. So it was never new or big surprise with the future guys other than Jokic, which I admit based on his style is something ive never seen before.

I remember that summer of 99 like yesterday as a Blazer fan. The news broke we got Schrempf, Pippen, and Steve Smith all in one swoop. It was clear he was older but he had some great games in red & black. Contributed in so many ways. That team was stacked too, so he didn't get the amount of shots he used to, but when he was on, he was smooth and efficient. Great player.

I didn't knew Schrempf was the first european All Star! I was under the impression that title would belong to Kiki VanDeWeghe who while being american citizen was born in West Germany. VanDeWeghe was a back to back All Star in '83 and '84. That does not take anything away from Schrempf though! He definitely was an important pioneer for european players and I want to think he had atleast something to do with how Dirk Nowitzki's career panned out. I remember Schrempf vividly from his Sonics days.

He was very versatile and maybe a little before his time. I think he was good for 15-20 PPG in his prime. Did he also play for Portland during the Jail Blazers Era? Seattle and Portland were both loaded, but these teams often shot themselves in the foot mentally. I also wonder if these teams were examples of having TOO much talent. There would be a lot of egos, while at the same time it was difficult for players to get a rhythm. It felt like watching those Rick Pitino - Kentucky teams, but at the professional level. Two separate waves of starter level players. The Sonics had a window when Jordan retired. I just didn't see Seattle beating the Bulls in those Finals, even though Gary Payton claimed to be slowing MJ down.
