I see what you're saying my friend and i'mma let you finish...BUT Tarrlok is actually a dark mirror to Zuko. Both are benders who took a long time to master a specific art in their bending styles.(Zuko, lightning directing/ Tarrlok, Bloodbending) Both had siblings who were more skilled than them as well as having fathers who praised their sibling and valued them more. the big difference is that unlike Zuko, who had Iroh to balance him out, Tarrlok had no one, his mother died, his brother ran away, all he had was the abuse and dark aspirations his father gave him until he died, Tarrlok embraced the evil his father tried to instill in him, compared to Zuko who chose to do right and rebel against the darkness his own father tried to seed in him. Tarrlock is what Zuko would have become had Zuko not had Iroh in his life

I raise you one better! Zuko is just the next generation Ozai in the cycle of abuse. Ozai was not favoured like Iroh, and had that abusive family dynamic and corrupt ideals hammered into him, so he's raising Zuko just as his father raised him. What I'm trying to say is... I think they all needed family therapy.

i find it funny how the writers of atla didnt want to have jet die on screen because they initially thought it wouldve been too dark for the kids watching....but then in korra you have an on screen suicide with these two, zaheer murdering the earth queen by _suffocating_ her, su literally blowing p'li's head off by wrapping her head with metal while she was about to fire an explosion, korra LITERALLY getting tortured on screen, and asami's father getting crushed to death by kuvira's mech

Imo he surely knew. He cried knowing that they unwillingly played into their father's hands. And that right now they did what he did by running. Ultimately, he knew it was the sad, but better choice.

I took their end as a final stop to this blood bending cycle Amon and Yakone has. The next thing I genuinely saw was that Amon would run it back with his potential kids and just wreck the world. He was broken beyond keeping him in the show.

Amon's mind was poisoned by his father. I think he really respects Aang a lot by having his father's bending removed by him. But he only sees power as the main controlling point. Republic City was built upon to find common grounds between Nations and to avoid discrimination, something the Equalist movement is fighting for. He never besmirched the Avatar position, only Korra since he sees her as a child with the Avatar powers. He put the mask of Amon to Aang's Statue to show that he is aiming to replace him, the uniter of Republic City. And his disguise as a "non-bender" that can seal bending is the anti-thesis of what Aang is.

I'm actually surprised by Ozai's backstory that he didn't had his eyes much on Zuko when he was in a similar situation as himself. Instead of doing the opposite of what Azulon did, Ozai just treated Zuko the same way and even worse. The Netflix version is making it a bit different and shows Ozai still being the way he is but also seeming to actually have more feelings for Zuko and even though they made a lot of stupid mistakes with their version, I do like that concept tho because that other side of him towards Zuko was only hinted in the animated show. It looks like they try to do more with that and I think it's nice.

To me it seemed like the ATLA version straight up hated Zuko and wanted him dead so Azula who he sees himself in could take his place. One of the few Netflix changes I actually like because you can tell Ozai genuinely cares for Zuko in his own way. He’s just monstrous so his lessons and the way he teaches them are just awful.

Amon and Tarrlok also parallel Ozai in another way: they also mastered bending subskills that are used in a dark, personal way. Ozai tried to vaporize his own son-domestic violence-whereas using bloodbending to take bending away can be read as an allegory for sexual violence.

I don’t personally see a whole lot of similarity between the two. Ozai wasn’t per se corrupt, he was simply the culmination of generations of indoctrination into the belief that the fire nation was superior. That indoctrination was the source of his motivation to finish the war and bring everyone under his rule. You could say he was corrupted, but he wasn’t truly the source of the corruption, his grandfather was. It simply was perpetuated all the way down the family line to Ozai and had he succeeded it would’ve continued with Azula. Tarrlok was truly corrupt by making illegitimate political moves that went against the system he was supposed to be serving. If anything Ozai’s actions were exactly in line with his nation’s ideological structure and beliefs at the time. He was most certainly evil, but not corrupt. The difference between the two is that evil is a state of nature, and corruption is when someone takes actions that go against their current state of being.

its good out of context, but amon's acceptance of the outcome never sat right with me. Amon was consistently depicted as driven, hopeful, and ambitious. The type to view his defeat by the avatar as a setback, and not as final. I just feel like the final scene is better if amon is truly hopeful and naive to tarrlock's imminent murder/suicide, rather than aware and accepting.

A Caveat for you. Ozai unlike Tarlock is a Sovereign Ruler and Absolute monarch. By definition he himself cannot be corrupt as the state pivots around him. Ozai can rule harshly in a way that people mind find it superfluous but he maintains that right. Tarlock on the other hand is not a sovereign ruler he was put into a trusted position to safeguard the state and protect people. He instead chose to abuse his power and his position to elevate himself. Tarlock fits the definition of corruption not Ozai.

Another stupid thing Lok did, they ruined Bloodbending. Bloodbending is suppose to be an unknown technique, only known to be possible by Team Avatar. Katara and the rest of the team would take that secret to the grave. Not only that, but it is so broken when it can be done outside a full moon, without actively bending too. If that’s possible, shouldn’t bending be possible without moving? Why is it that masters of their element can’t do it? It also just makes it completely broken. Something that powerful needs limitations. Hama only learned it in the most dire and desperate circumstances, taking a long time. The only way she could pass the technique on was by bloodbending Katara. That’s how it is learned. So unless Katara bloodbended someone, which she would never do, it doesn’t make sense for Yakone or his kids to bloodbend, especially after Yakone had his bending taken away. It’s stupid. It’s like Firebenders having the power or Sozin’s comet all the time. Or Korra having constant access to the Avatar State….wait. Anyway, it’s stupid and just bad writing and worldbuilding.

This actually made me hate the show. It doesn't matter what the situation is, suicide is NEVER the correct answer. However, a show for an older generation being displayed on a CHILDREN'S network, is saying "You know what? There are actually situations where it is perfectly acceptable to kill yourself." Guys.... just no. Push any of your agendas, I don't give a crap. At least they'll be alive. They'll be alive to have experiences, and meet people who can help discover and push towards or away from what is right. But suicide? Presented as something noble to kids? Come on now.

Considering that Korra was supposed to be just one season, it is warming to know that the villains did infact die. At least, it was for me considering Amon gave me nightmares, not to mention seeing what happened to the society... Okay, that was personal. As for philosophically why the ending was okay... The brothers found the one equalizer that doesn't care who was born first, who has the greatest blending abilities, or the greatest charisma...and that equalizer was Death. And Death comes for all, which made it fitting that both brothers died at the same time. Very poetic.

@@sleipnirthe8th339 Now you know half of the reason why I got nightmares. They took a concept that was planted in AtLA and developed it. Though I wish they didn't have the ability to do blood blending during the day. THAT felt like it was OP. Considering that again, the show runners only planned to have 1 season at the beginning, it will take some serious creative genius to come up with energy blending at the time. But the idea that non-benders have enough power to stop the Avator? They could have most certainly pulled that off. I was briefly on the Internet at the time of the show and people were going NUTS theorizing who Amon was. One of the popular theories was that he was Ty-Lee's descendant who she taught about chi-blocking on top of how the human body works. Unlike Ty-Lee, Amon used this power not for self-defense, but for power and control. But atlas, we have what we have.
