This is perhaps the world premiere recording of the first version of Bruckner's Os justi.
Bruckner composed Os justi for the feast of St. Augustine, founder of the Augustine order, celebrated at St. Florian Abbey on August 28, 1879. Just like many other composers, Bruckner continued to refine his works after he had first committed them to paper. Many of the original versions (and subsequent revisions) are documented in manuscripts still preserved in libraries around the world today. They allow for a fascinating glimpse into Bruckner's creative mind and let us experience not only the finished masterwork, but the process of its creation.
The setting of the ordinary at the 1879 first performance was Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli. In fact, many of Bruckner's most popular choral works were written for performances alongside "early music". This inspired us to celebrate the composer's 200th Birthday in 2024 with a program of his pieces in combination with works by Palestrina, Muffat, Lotti, and Anonymous that they were first performed with. This recording was made as part of that project.
