This is not at all an unsatisfying piece of music. It is simply a less developed representation of Dvorak's compositional abilities. If you cannot appreciate this you are truly missing out.

Just love the creativity and genius of Dvorak ... all his work is touched by the majesty of melodic invention and passion.

What an angelic work from the great Slavic composer of the latter half of the 19th century. It's as beautiful as his Op. 90.

An attractive and promising start for a young composer. Not to belittle Op.5 but Op.81 shows what the mature Dvorak was really capable of.

Thank you so much for this wonderful upload with such an outstanding ensemble of players Richter and the Borodin quartet, it was a pleasure hearing them play, also Willem Mengelberg was a phenomenal conductor!

During his peak years as a composer, Dvorak was known for his passion for trains. Was he already passionate about trains at the time he wrote Op. 5? In the first movement, the recapitulation comes by way of an accelerando that sounds as though it could be a train pulling out of a station, and the first violin sounds like a train whistle in between phrases of the first theme.

Well, it's juvenilia, but it's damn good juvenilia. No, it doesn't have the thematic and harmonic distinctiveness of Dvorak's masterpieces, but it does have an abundance of joie de vivre, earnest expression, and solid craftsmanship. If Richter and the Borodin quartet thought the piece worthy of their attention, who am I to argue?

Since a couple of years ago, I decided that my musical heart was with duos, trios, quartets, quintets and sextets (strings with piano). Symphonies are much too grandiloquent, and I feel form and thematic material are best treated in this kind of ensemble works. I still have many great symphonies in my audio archive like various by Allan Pettersson (the last that I downloaded was the first movement of Michael Tippett 2nd symphony and a lot of time before that some symphonic work by Ter Tadevosyan). When it is a work before the First world war, I keep the rule of only works in minor tonality; until today, Dvorak has been the only master composer that has attracted my attention with works in major tonality. Although for me the tonality of his piano quartets and quintets is continually shifting and at times this gives a kind of schizophrenic feel to them, he always has some interesting passages worth keeping (I am downloading all of them) Thanks for sharing and kind regards, MSM

It may not be as great as op. 81, but it is FAR from unsatisfying!

I like this piece, it's not as good as the second quintet but it's still pretty wonderful.
