Thanks for this Mr. Matt. I asked this exact question on a live stream of yours. I think it’s worth noting that, when you get your upper body loaded and pulled back, the direction on the barrel turn is no longer pointed toward the catcher. If you’re a lefty, your barrel will begin turning to the left of the catcher. And if you’re a righty, your barrel will begin turning to the right of the catcher. I think this is why many people (myself included) thought the barrel turn started by pointing the barrel back toward the number on your jersey. This video helped clarify a lot of things. Thanks again for spoiling us with MLB quality coaching for free.

Here is an observation, bats should rotate and not be swung. Swing bats are hard to turn, slower and produce a long swing. A bat that is rotated swivels around the center of mass of the bat. It naturally a smaller swing that is tighter, easier to move the barrel into the zone, and quicker to get on plane. Keep up with the great content!
@lancastergerard
@lancastergerard Жыл бұрын
To rotate a bat at its center of mass you would have to grip the the barrel. That’s where the center of mass is. Swinging from the grip gives the mechanical advantage of a lever. But you are correct in that a shorter radius makes the swing faster.

Thank you this is a great video - it really helped me understand the swing plane and being in the zone longer. Great explanation! Do you have some explanation or simplification of the load prior to the palm up/rear barrel movement? I hear words like load, stack coil etc.... How do you get this across to younger players? Thanks again Matt!

90 degree early connection is second only to proper hip hinge as musts for the most efficient swing. Blast only people talking about it.

The turn starts at toe tap. Your right about barrel working to posterior side takes longer. But if you train a hitter to work barrel posteriorly and get the barrel to 90 degrees early connection AT toe tap the barrel will be on plane behind the head. Result is maximum barrel speed and efficiency. Swing plane is a circle around the hitters upper body core, tilted lower in front by correct hip hinge. Great hitters like Soto get on plane behind their head to their posterior side not toward catcher. It’s simple efficient physics. Ted Williams and Babe Ruth did it that way. Look at their videos.
@P90Camper

I am trying to understand the to tap part. I assume this is during the load before the swing? I am a newbie sorry if this is a dumb question.

Where should the bat path begin? At a 45% angle or back towards the catcher?
@wukus1962

And a hitter can still stay inside the ball initiating their turn from 90 degrees early connection immediately after toe tap.

@dape8993

@@Smi77y1 In some ways yes, other ways no. Teacherman teaches an upper half move which is jerky and flailing , not the smooth or fluid action you see from big leaguers or from Antonelli in this video. The goal and result is basically the same but Teacherman's movement at that stage causes a loss of balance, a partial fly open and a pull of the head--much more difficult to make consistent solid contact that way. Pros slot the elbow and turn the barrel in the fashion that Antonelli displays here, not the fashion Teacherman displays.
