He is a pleasure to hear and having seen Werther tonight, which was a joy, I appreciate all the more. Antonio Pappano’s explanation. The orchestra was wonderful and Juan Diego Florez is always able to convey immense feeling. A truly fantastic performance. Thank you

I cherish Werther as my guilty pleasure but Pappano is making it popular so I feel at lost... Seriously I love this video because when I show it to my friends they can understand more about me and my love.

Very grateful to ROH for posting this. For me, Werther is an intensely attractive opera, with a degree of emotive romanticism that teeters at times on the edge of indulgent, maudlin self pity. But the skill of the music, especially for Werther and Charlotte's return from the ball (the Clair de lune duet), the letter scene, and Charlotte and Werther's Christmas meeting in Act 111, is overwhelming, and offsets the melodramatic tone of Werther's request for pistols (a scene which induces some laughter in many in a modern audience), and the extended death scene. Goethe's novella, immensely popular in its day, is more a period piece now, an insight into the depth of feeling that accompanied the emergence of Romanticism, but Massenet's opera invests the material with a generally convincing authenticity which engages a modern audience thoroughly. I'm greatly looking forward to the cinema transmission of this production.

I agree! It is *almost* too much! Somehow Massenet manages to balance it just so.. beautiful.

Back in the 60s getting introduced to opera (& being in and around NYC), Werther was one of those French operas which were unlikely ever to see. That has changed. I first saw Werther at UCLA in 1983, glad to have seen it, but did not impress me. My next encounter with Werther was in Tel Aviv June 1996 which I enjoyed more. But when I saw Werther in Los Angeles a little later in September '98 with Ramon Vargas I saw the light. I've experienced Werther again in a subsequent LA Opera revival and I found myself moved much more. Werther is now one of my favorite operas with such beautiful music and psychological truth. I can hardly believe that for a long time Werther was not in the international repertory. The efforts of people like Alfredo Kraus paid off. I look forward to seeing Werther again.

Fantastic music and the ROH orchestra with Tony Pappano does it justice. Bravo! I hope the film ( filmed on the 27th June ) has many encores around the world so people can see it.
