My parents have gone off to watch Mark Elder perform the Wagner opera 'Siegfried' at Manchester this weekend. I would prefer pull out my own teeth with pair of pliers than watch that, but there you go. Great music but I wouldn't sit through 5 hours of Wagner for hell or high water. My dad loves Mark Elder's chats he gives before Mahler symphonies and etc. He loves his ability to just talk without a script and be entertaining. I have the brains and ability to do that too. "It is not over to the fat lady sings!" As the saying goes. Cheers - Mike.

The singers do such a wonderful job on their parts and their vocal coach tighten up their performance with new ideas that takes their vocalization and lyrical pronunciation to a higher level.

Excuse me. Your statement that Mimi and Rodolfo have been separated for some time, does not coincide with the libretto. It - the libretto - specifically states that Rodolfo left the flat he shared with Mimi, the morning of Mimi's search for Marcello (Act III); that he came to Marcello earlier that morning and had fallen asleep. Will you comment on the disparity? The time frame is important because it references the urgency Mimi feels and, is the direct cause for her need for advice from Marcello.

You are right, I also noticed that. I think he got confused with the story from which the libretto was inspired, there they are separated for longer. Also I don't agree with him saying that she knows she is dying, because couple of minutes later when Rodolfo shares his fears with Marcello that Mimi is very sick, she says surprised: Oh my, am I dying?! This is a very important part that shows us how deep and true her love for Rodolfo is, because she completely forgets about her sickness while being with him, that's how happy she is not being alone anymore. Also showing her fear of dying alone.

I simply can't find the words, how much I have enjoyed this clip. The young lady is a vocal gem . La Boheme is one of my favourite operas but Maestro Elder has managed to bring it to me closer with his explanations and instructions.

When was Boheme last done in Manchester? Here, little opera, all done on shoestring.Only solution is travel abrooad to macro opera towns. Recently Aida all veiled singers made to perform incongruus gestures, choerus compressed in corner o stage. Ma vi dico che basta e basta e bastta!
