This performance is a gift from great Yuri Bashmet to Shostakovich (and to all of us). THANKS to ADGO.

Amazing performance from both. I heard them play this in 2006 at the Lionel Tertis competition in Douglas, Isle of Man. This is a wonderful chance to hear this Sonata again, played by these two stellar musicians. Thanks for sharing it!

It's incredible to think under what circumstances DSCH wrote this piece, dying of lung cancer in a hospital.Virtually all his last (and best) chamber music pieces were composed as 'gifts' to his musician friends. And of course his last string quartet, nr 15, was a gift to himself.

And should I say, a gift to mankind as well

How low can you go? This is not depressing. It is well beyond that. The most devastating work in the entire chamber music repertoire, You thought Shostakovich String Quartet No. 15 took it down? And Bashmet plays it to perfection.

I'm not a musician but I've loved Shostakovich since childhood. I can tell a virtuoso performance from the ordinary. Bashmet is the best.

Shostakovick was amazing to complete this final work in Stalinist Russian while dying. It is a true monumental epic of his genius.

It is really disgusting that in the face of this masterpiece, some people are spreading some sort of propaganda cliche... Don't you feel ashamed that the only thing that comes to your mind while listening to Shostakovich(this is the proper spelling, not Shostakovick) is "Stalinist Russian". What exactly is Stalinist Russia btw? And what this piece have to do with so called "Stalinist Russia"? So that you know op. 147 was written in 1975 long after Stalin's death.

А меня поразила перекличка пиццикато альта и покашливания, постукивания, потрескивания из зала. Может, какая-то ирония автора?
