I'm 28 and have a goal to one day become a doctor. I've had my doubts an contemplate if I'm too old or not smart enough and I've also brought the subject up about becoming a doctor and people would say "you gotta be a genius to become that" so I shut it down real quick. Right now I'm studying to hopefully one day get into med school and have not told a single soul about my goal.. Watching videos like yours gave me hope never to give up and watching this video is a great inspiration because that Grit that you are talking about is what I feel when I think about my future goal. Now, I don't want to say "dream" because dreams dissappear so my goal is set and waiting to be reached. Thank you for this video because now I know what that feeling that burns within me. Oh, an greetings all the way from New Zealand :)

Colorful Days Hi, Thanks for the question. Wow! All the way from New Zealand! I get this question a lot. It's kind of hard to answer this question completely without knowing your story (family life, previous life experiences, future goals, etc) but here are my thoughts: You will be in your career working as a physician for 20-30+ years and I know the road to get to that point is arduous and lengthy, but I do believe it's worth it. You have to ask yourself, "Am I willing to sacrifice family and personal time, sacrifice a minimum of 8-10 years of my life and sacrifice financially to become a doctor?" And if that answer is yes, I say go for it. The average age in my medical school class was roughly 30 years old (oldest being 42 and youngest 23) and I currently work with 2 orthopedic surgeons who are 80+ years old. They have been a doctor for longer than I have been born. So, starting off medical school at (to overestimate it) 40 years old, you will be done around 50 years old and still can work 20 years and retire at 70. Check out my video on KZbin that I posted on this same topic and subscribe to my channel to be the first to receive new videos that I post weekly! kzbin.info kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2TJaWVmprCphrM I hope this helps. Good luck! Remember if medicine is something you really want to do, then NEVER give up. Also, I just published a book about my path to medicine called "Overcoming the Odds" which I talk about my time growing up in the rough streets of Louisiana, my time as a military medic serving in Iraq, and applying to medical school then residency. I give a lot of advice after each chapter. You should definitely check it out before you start med school. It's at: www.amazon.com/author/antoniowebbmd A. Colorful Days I know I don't know you but I just want to offer you encouraging words. First off, you are not definitely not old, in fact you are far from it. When it comes to what you want in life, you are never too old. I wanted to become a doctor but without getting to lengthy about the story, I let myself get in the way and academic advisors scare me. I didn't think I was smart enough and I struggled with math classes in high school and math and science classes in college. I didn't have the GPA and but what made it worse for me is that I lacked the confidence which to me hurt me the most. I didn't think I could make it and so many other things I was thinking about it that it truly clouded my judgement. There wasn't KZbin back in the days when I was coming up so I didn't have this type of encouragement. Even if there was KZbin, I don't how I would have made it use of it because I was so young and I truly didn't experience life. With all that being said, you are doing right by fulfilling your dreams. Not everybody has to know your plans because not only is it anybody's business, but you don't know who is for you and who is not. There are also some people who mean well but will discourage you all the same. If there is someone whom you trust and whom you hold dear to you and you know they will speak to you love and truth and will be encouraging, them by all means, p,ease do tell them because we all need somebody at the sidelines cheering us on! Life is short and the one thing I know is you do not want to live your life in regret. If God ( I don't know your faith but pls forgive me) has given you the ability to walk, talk, hear, think, learn, see, and comprehend, then you are blessed and able to use those gifts and go after your calling. When everything is said and done, at least you can you tried and that is something nobody can take from you.

Dr. Webb you're absolutely right. That's how it was for me in Corps school in the Navy. My good friend was always getting 98 to 100 on his exams. This brother never really studied. He even told me that he admired how hard I worked because I spent almost my entire time there studying and learning about bedside care and field medicine. My average was 84. When it got to our practical exams I blew it out of the water and then later on when we got with our Marine Corps units I flourished as well. I think that's just how life is in general. There's always going to be those people that get it the first time and are amazing test takers, and then they'll be those individuals that get it after the fourth time, are mediocre test takers, but yet they land great positions and everyone wants them on the team. Thanks for the video

Speechless. Wow, i genuinely needed that advice and reminder. Often times I find myself bringing myself down because my courses get too difficult and the studies just accumulate therefore, i lose inspiration in becoming a Doctor. I feel like a partial reason is because I feel like I am losing out in "fun" since friends my age (early 20's) are out having a blast while I am stuck in my room every single day AND weekends to study for hoursss. I am a lot like you in the sense where I have to study 10x harder and read things over 7+ times whereas my classmates or friends dont even look at their notes or study and still pass tests with A's! Honestly, I was feeling extremely discouraged because I felt like if i wasnt smart enough BECAUSE i had to study harder than others. Although you might not read this, I still feel the need to tell you thank you for posting such an inspirational video. Really got me thinking and changed my whole perspective, and most importantly, i regained my inspiration of becoming a physician!

I'm a M1 and I can relate bc when I applied to med school, I was referred to a Post Bacc program bc my MCAT score wasn't really competitive. Standardized tests aren't my thing either, but I do work hard and that's all that matters and guarantees success! You're a Surgeon for crying out loud! Lol 👏🏽 I just know that I have to start earlier and study longer for Step 1, despite what the quote on quote cool kids say! I've learned it's okay to have to worker harder than others! God bless!

Dr. Webb, you cannot imagine how me stumbling on this video today has raised me out of a decade long slump. From the very bottom of my heart, thank you. I have wanted to become a doctor since middle school (late bloomer compared to many). I started out as a pre-med major after high school (wanted to be a psychiatrist) but dropped out due to changing life situations. I'm currently working in the IT field which I do not enjoy. In the past month or 2, I'm seriously considering (at 38 yrs old), going back to school to become a clinical pathologist. After years of thinking that it's too late and that I don't have what it takes, I feel I need to try. This is the one thing I've felt so passionate about but never gave it a full chance to manifest. I feel that this video was the last lost piece of a puzzle I've been trying to put together for a very long time.

I am a Nurse and would have loved to have been a Dr, but having dyslexia and ADHD I was under the impression that my grades at school reflected my intelligence. I never thought it would be possible to make it through medical school. The one thing I do have due to my learning problems at school, did in fact help to produce the fire and grit inside of me, I needed it to get through, I needed to work harder and put in more effort. The topic medicine is something that fascinates me, there is not a day goes by that I am not learning something new about medicine, and I graduated 25 years ago and it still fascinated me. Nothing was going to stop me from being a nurse either! Grit is such a strength to have. You do not give up. Nothing sways you from your path once you are on it. Well said Dr xx

Doctor Webb, I couldn't agree more with what you said. I heard the same thing growing up as an average student and all it did was push me more to succeed. Although, after my first and second semesters of college I didn't do very well. In fact, I nearly was kicked out of college, so my family decided to invest in a tutor and that changed my life. If it wasn't for that tutor I would have never discovered my problem, which was how I was studying the material. After a month or two, my test scores completely changed, as well as my GPA which was 2.1 at the start and within a year shot up to 3.3.

Thank you for your inspiring video Dr. Webb. I am currently a biology major in university right now and have always wanted to go to med school, but a few years ago when I went to see my pre-health advisor, she told me how my gpa is too low to get into med school and how I would never make it and it just seemed like a constant pattern that people around me were telling me. Even those who didn't even know me at all were saying the same thing and it really broke me down. I started getting depressed and my anxiety got worse. I started doing worse in my classes and I lost a lot of self-motivation, grit and self-confidence that I can actually make my dream to be a doctor come true, but now, once I took the pressure off of myself and got back the self-confidence that I could actually make this happen for myself, I felt like all that grit came back to me and I've been getting better grades in my classes and many social life has also improved tremendously. I've also talked to my friends who said they're struggling with the same things. I definitely agree that talent will only get a person so far. It's grit that will take you all the way to the end. I am almost done with university and will be graduating next semester. I am planning to take a gap year and take the mcat as well as apply to my local med school's post bacc. program. keep it up and thank you for inspiring us students who will be future doctors someday very soon along with you. Thanks again.

i'm so relieved and glad you mentioned how you worked as hard as you could, even though others may had put in less effort/time than you did to get good scores. i really relate to this as i've always been the type of student who takes tests slowly, asks dozens of questions, and has to re-read things more than others in order to keep up. especially as a person currently majoring in STEM, it feels so disheartening when some students say they find topics easy and effortless while i may struggle to understand them. thanks for your content!

Honestly, you are by far the most inspiring person on KZbin! This video really hit me hard. I keep telling myself “I am a hard worker”. I passed my GCSEs with flying colours, however, in England, we have to do well in our AS (Year 12) to be able to continue studying the subject at A2 (year 13) also, you apply to university before you get your final A2 grades, so basically you apply with ‘predicted grades’ depending on what you got in year 12. I hope I’ve made sense there, anyway, so after failing my maths in year 12, I remember my maths teacher telling me it was ridiculous to even attempt applying to medical school, (THIS WAS THE FIRST LESSON BACK AFTER THE SUMMER!) he told me ‘no-one will ever look at you, or your application, they’ll just glance at your grades and chuck your application in the bin, medicine is not for you’. For the remainder of that lesson, I felt like the dumbest thing alive. I quit maths the next day. It doesn’t help that my other teachers said the same thing. I sat my A2 year and passed. Only marginally. I was so disappointed, I tried so hard. It wouldn’t get me to medical school in the UK, so I thought I would apply to study abroad. Even though I did get in, I still feel like I don’t deserve my place, like I’m not good enough. Your video has given me hope. I will succeed. I do deserve my place and I will try my best to get myself to the top!

It's so true! Becoming a doctor has nothing to do with being smart. As long as you have common sense and compassion, you got the foundation. Being a doctor is 80% hard work and effort. That is where all the studying comes in. Studying brings knowledge but you don't have to be smart to begin with.

I really needed this, Sir. I am currently torn between becoming a cardiologist or a nurse practitioner. Simply because of the years involved in becoming a cardiologist and that I always have to work twice as hard as A-students to get an A. I kind of think I'm not smart enough to practice cardiology. But this has reshaped that mentality. Blessings, Sir.

You have no idea how many people are in my medical terminology class that from day 1 said they want to be a surgeon and struggle to ace the course. They are not going to end as surgeons I tell ya. It does take intelligence; you need problem solving skills, able to multitask, make the best choice even when all choices are horrible, and absorb new ideas rather quickly. You can have the best of study habits, but if you can't regurgitate info or retain it long enough in large volumes, it's impossible. This is very apparent in high level science courses, the "weed out" classes.

I just want to begin by thanking you for a great video. It's nice to see someone spending time researching 'people' and 'what they're made of', or their 'grit'. I'm a Physiotherapist working in Australia after qualifying and working in the UK for 4 years. I'm currently 34yrs old, have children and married. My goal is a simple one, to become the most intelligent, hard working person I can be, while helping others in the process. Studying Medicine is something I considered before entering into Physio, however I was never encouraged by others to go down that route whenever I spoke about it and studying physio was hard enough. I feel like i'm too old and lack the IQ to even pass the GAMSAT, let alone complete 4 years of medical study. Do you think i'm talking nonsense If I have 'grit'? Ir do you feel my age/situation is too 'set in stone' for someone like me to pursue becoming a Dr? p.s. I'm extraordinarily interested in Orthopedics.

Im really bad at math and science. Cant even get a pass for it. My science is always C 2. I want to be a poet/writer too. I want to write a book and maybe make a movie for it if i can #dreambig 3. I got sick easily. How can I be with sick people when I am easily sick 4. I have anxiety, panic attack and adhd.

Talent is talent , and it has its importance in whatever you do, no doubt. What is holding most people back in life is not lack of potential, but fear of failure,as far as im concerned. So whoever you are, if you really want to go to medical school and become an md, go after it. Its as simple as that. Dont worry about failure. You're not gonna win everything in life

I’m 21 and about to graduate with my Bachelor’s in Marketing and I’m not happy. I’ve been thinking a lot of about nursing school because travel nursing sounds amazing and traveling the world is my #1 goal in life but medicine is also a passion of mine. I’ve always felt like I was too dumb for medical school, I’m scared that if I go back to undergrad to take my pre-reqs that I’m still not gonna succeed when it comes to the MCAT. I took medical terminology and failed that class, because memorizing things is so hard for me.

I went to what was supposed to be a meeting for pre-med students to get a support group and the speaker just told us how impossible it is. It left me questioning what I wanted. I birthed and raised children since I was 20 years old.. So now in my older ( not old) adult years I am doing things now that I never gave myself a chance to do.
