I graduated with a 1.6 GPA, and at the bottom 11 percentile of my senior class. I Ended up doing 10 years in the military 3 Army guard, 7 US Navy. I became a corpsman in the Navy specializing as a respiratory therapist. During my time in the military and a year after separating it took me a total of 11 years to get past remedial courses, undergrad, and PA prereqs. I recently got accepted to PA school. This story is all too familiar. Glad to see that there are other black men out there finding ways to overcome and achieve success.

@@reesebrown5291 10 years, still active. Just moved to Arizona last month. Got caught up in the reaction force when Russia invaded last year and hot off a divorce a couple months ago that turned sour, all of which held up my educational goals. But now that I’m on my own I can actually focus everything on education. I totally forgot I made this comment tbh, I’ve since turned my sights on a law career. I actually start classes next week tbh. It was a rough 3 years. Deployed twice and the divorce happened, which was planned but the real her came out and our son got caught in the middle. So now that I’m living alone and In a new state. Im back on my bs. And I’m in a non-deployable unit so I can focus with no distractions. I even sat down and had a conversation with a physician who didn’t start medical school until he was 32 who also reassured me that it wasn’t too late, but the whole divorce thing took a huge mental total on me, only because I had to leave my son behind, I couldn’t care less about the wife. Dr. Webb you are a great encouragement. I took the MCAT last year and made a 483, I took it again and made a 488 after hiring a tutor and completing a Kaplan course. I plan to do the same as you did and take off a full year to diligently study for the MCAT with no distractions besides continuing working as an ED Scribe. I’ve currently completed one medical school interview and received my letter of denial 3 days ago. It felt like a giant slap in the face but I will not let it discourage me from becoming a physician. I look forward to one day receiving my White Coat and passing all medical boards. It makes my day receiving a notification that you’ve posted a new video. Hello Antonio J Webb. I share a similar story to you in that my lack of knowledge of the medical school process (I am from the UK) but unlike you I did not have the conviction of wanting to study medicine from 17 years old, my conviction and volition to study medicine developed at the relatively mature age of 24 years old. I plan on applying to medical school at either 26 or 27 years of age because most medical courses in the UK are 6 years I will graduate at either 33 or 34 years of age, doing a course like one did the Georgetown Post Bac GEMS programme to enable me to apply to medical school, 10/11 years after someone who chose to do Medicine earlier from 18 and qualified at 23 years old. I am currently an ECG technician, as an ECG technician I am developing traits I would not otherwise have (such as empathy, patience and building a rapport with the patients I see) had I applied to medical school with just brief work experience. I now know the difference between a job and career, a career offers development, increased opportunity and responsibility; most jobs do not. You are an inspiration, you were not moulded by you environment. Thank You

Hispanic female physician here - I can say that we need more minority physicians STAT. I was more traditional in my training and it was tough! I think that sometimes we focus on getting everything done in a tight timeline. This works for some but not all. As a college student I worked part time to support myself. This is a common story for minorities. I was able to have a more linear path, but please be encouraged by Dr. Webb’s story. The path can take years, but there is a finish line. And you too can be a great physician, even if you have to work 1-2 jobs as a student or take extra time to get there. We need more minority physicians and many will need extra time. That’s ok, maybe even necessary, to become a great physician. Keep working hard and don’t lose sight of your goals and your community. Stay focused and you’ll get there!! 🧑🏻‍⚕️🧑🏽‍⚕️🧑🏾‍⚕️

I’m also a student doing the ATAR and this is such an inspiring comment Tegan. I’m not doing any sciences at all and due to this I have extreme doubts in becoming a doctor. Reading your comment and listening to Antonio has been truly inspiring, it’s lovely to learn that another student in Australia is taking the persistent path around becoming a doctor, this helps me to learn that I’m not alone. I believe that following the longer path can allow for other experiences other students at medicine may potentially not learn, such as the feeling the greatest joy in achieving something that you have persisted to get for so so long. I truly truly hope all goes well with you, and that your dedication in taking this path will blossom and reap rewards. Please keep at it, I know you’ll get there ❤️

Simply amazing. The trials and tribulations you overcame. The mere fact you kept pushing yourself to strive for excellence. Most say it takes a village to raise a child but in your case the word prodigy stands strong because it was within you to succeed dispute the obstacles in your way. Just by watching this video, I’m proud to know you. Thank you and God bless.

I knew there was some reason I liked you, go Army! You are an inspiration. They way you overcame barriers and environment to gain your education and fulfill your dream is amazing. You did not give up, even went Post Bac! Georgetown, wow! The one thing I would suggest is to think about going back in the Reserves as an MD to lock down that retirement and the other benefits. Your previous discussion about how some of your peers went broke during COVID is one reason to join the Reserves.

Honestly same even now, I graduated hs with a 2.0 gpa. First year of college got c's and b's, med school started feeling like a pipe dream. Now I got on myself with time management, now my grades have improved to b's for Chem and bio, next semester spring will be A's. Hope the same happens for you.

Thank you! I specifically like how getting good grades or straight A’s was not the main point of this video. Of course grades are important, but by centralizing the video to “I got here because I never gave up” encourages me to continue pressing on as I journey to become a PharmD!

Congrats bro, this is a perfect example why I tried to never judge some of the Joes that I worked with. They aren't just PV2s, PFCs, or SPCs, they are real human beings with a ton of potential and capabilities. I gave so much respect to all of them pursuing degrees while active duty. I know a few junior enlisted that have gone on to PA school, dental school, and med school.

Focus on high school. Get the best grades you can so you can get into the college of your choice. High school is more important than you may think. I’m a college freshman and if I could go back to change a few grades, I totally would! Work hard and it’ll pay off!
