I graduated with a 1.6 GPA, and at the bottom 11 percentile of my senior class. I Ended up doing 10 years in the military 3 Army guard, 7 US Navy. I became a corpsman in the Navy specializing as a respiratory therapist. During my time in the military and a year after separating it took me a total of 11 years to get past remedial courses, undergrad, and PA prereqs. I recently got accepted to PA school. This story is all too familiar. Glad to see that there are other black men out there finding ways to overcome and achieve success.

I have a 2.8 gpa undergrad GPA. I'm such a different person than I was during my college years. I feel just absolutely lost. I'll be taking prerequisite classes for the ADN program (RN). I've always wanted to be a physician, but I was just too lazy to put forth any real effort studying. It wasn't until working my last crappy job doing back breaking manual labor that I broke down into tears and realized how my laziness in college has robbed me of my dream. I'll do anything to go back in time and fix my mistakes.

4 years in undergraduate, 2 years getting my masters and 1 trimester in Chiropractic school. I visited multiple MD and DO schools. Also visited schools in traditional medicine. I worked as a medical scribe in internal medicine and life skills specialist for the mentally challenged. I even switched careers and went into the horticulture industry. 7 years later after highschool, here I I'm dropping out of Chiropractic school to focus on my MCAT and will be trying to get into a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program.

I work full time as a veterinary technician. I am working to go to medical school. I’m running into the same issue of my grades being effected by work. I’ve been work overtime and many times picking up shifts at other hospitals since I was 18. I worked many odd jobs prior to breaking into the medical field. I was homeless at 17. Videos like this are really encouraging that I can make it happen. I don’t make enough to save up to take anytime off so it’s really discouraging. I wish I could take time off to improve my gpa. Thank you for making videos like this

I am sorry for anyone going through a rough life, but excuse me if you dont like what I'll write. Here we have a man seen it all, experienced it all, and had all the right reasons to just be another young life wasted to the world. To just be another statistic. Besides it all he never gave up and picked himself out of the mud. Here he is sharing himself so others may follow his footsteps. Dont find the excuses not to succeed cuz you will find em. Instead, find all the reasons to be different and change yourself. God bless you Dr. Webb for sharing your story on this platform. Yuppp same reason I hardly ever tell people I'm in school to be a doctor. People either treat you differently, ask you a million questions, or throw jealous hate shade (the average illogical response) and with women you generally can't trust their responses afterwards so it's best to just not tell people very often. It's extremely sad that's the world we live in now but it is, the morals of humans is certainly drastically degrading by year. Being a doctor is nothing special, just bc a majority of people aren't capable of becoming one doesn't make us anything special, it just means we are able to be persistent on a path many aren't. It's just a job like any other, we don't find it exotic or unbelievable.....other people do....and we can't control that ignorance.

Doc Webb, Army Vet here. I just finished my 8 years of service in November. I’m now looking into schools back home in Texas and am considering Texas A&M for undergrad and medical school. I am 30 years old now. What are your thoughts about my age and beginning this path? After serving, the medical field has become my main goal after all of my experiences. I do have college credits, but my GPA is in the B/B+ range. Should I start fresh to make sure I get as good of grades as possible? Keep up the great videos! I’m so glad I found your channel! Jamie

Too many of them think that they are not smart enough to do these things and I always tell them it ain't about intelligence it's all about hard work and persistentence. I couldn't become a Doctor but I will be proud if one of my student wants to become one and I help them do so. It gets depressing at time as teacher but seeing my students in you makes it all worth it.

@@reesebrown5291 10 years, still active. Just moved to Arizona last month. Got caught up in the reaction force when Russia invaded last year and hot off a divorce a couple months ago that turned sour, all of which held up my educational goals. But now that I’m on my own I can actually focus everything on education. I totally forgot I made this comment tbh, I’ve since turned my sights on a law career. I actually start classes next week tbh. It was a rough 3 years. Deployed twice and the divorce happened, which was planned but the real her came out and our son got caught in the middle. So now that I’m living alone and In a new state. Im back on my bs. And I’m in a non-deployable unit so I can focus with no distractions. I even sat down and had a conversation with a physician who didn’t start medical school until he was 32 who also reassured me that it wasn’t too late, but the whole divorce thing took a huge mental total on me, only because I had to leave my son behind, I couldn’t care less about the wife. But yeah, that’s where I’m at now 🤣

Focus on high school. Get the best grades you can so you can get into the college of your choice. High school is more important than you may think. I’m a college freshman and if I could go back to change a few grades, I totally would! Work hard and it’ll pay off!

Hello Antonio J Webb. I share a similar story to you in that my lack of knowledge of the medical school process (I am from the UK) but unlike you I did not have the conviction of wanting to study medicine from 17 years old, my conviction and volition to study medicine developed at the relatively mature age of 24 years old. I plan on applying to medical school at either 26 or 27 years of age because most medical courses in the UK are 6 years I will graduate at either 33 or 34 years of age, doing a course like one did the Georgetown Post Bac GEMS programme to enable me to apply to medical school, 10/11 years after someone who chose to do Medicine earlier from 18 and qualified at 23 years old. I am currently an ECG technician, as an ECG technician I am developing traits I would not otherwise have (such as empathy, patience and building a rapport with the patients I see) had I applied to medical school with just brief work experience. I now know the difference between a job and career, a career offers development, increased opportunity and responsibility; most jobs do not. You are an inspiration, you were not moulded by you environment. Thank You
