As long as there are colleges and universities, minor league teams, and the pros who will spend millions on their star players, you will make a nice living serving the mostly uneducated sports world. Meanwhile, blue-collar disabled (fireman in my instance, yes I was a professional FF for seven years despite having OI type 1 with traces of type 4 and a history of 132 fx) and their families will continue to travel hundreds, if not thousands of miles to go to the few special clinics with OI teams to treat us. I honestly wish you the best Mr./Dr. Brown (not sure where you are in your studies), but if you really want to help people with orthopaedic injuries and conditions, you will get done with residency and go study with someone like Dr. Eric Rush and others who can help train you to serve a small, yet needy, ortho subset of individuals. Good luck and God Bless in your studies.

1 year for fellowship on shoulder and elbow replacement? That needs to change, needs to be like 3 to 4 years. Misdiagnosis is very common in shoulder surgery that really needs to change. A shoulder is like a tire on a car, take a tire off what starts to get damaged? rim, over time the motor gets stressed, suspension eventually snaps, then eventually ECU will shut down, and ECU in a human is mental state and quality of life.

+Positive Vibes Good question. Pedi Ortho is a good field. Pediatric orthopedic surgeons diagnose, treat, and manage children’s musculoskeletal problems such as limb and spine deformities (i.e club foot, scoliosis) Gait abnormalities, bone and joint infections, broken bones, etc. A residency, you would need to do a 1 year fellowship to specialize in pedi surgery. Hi Dr.Webb. What is the difference between someone who is a podiatrist and someone who is a orthopedic surgeon who specializes in the foot and ankle. Do they both do the same type of surgery or is it different? Great video :)

+Victoria Oluyole Hi, Thanks for the comment and watching! Good question. Orthopedic surgeons go through 4 years of medical school, 5 years of residency and 1 year of fellowship to become foot and ankle orthopedic surgeons. Podiatrists do 4 years of podiatry school and 3 years of residency. Surgeries are similar but Ortho docs are able to do more. I hope this helps! Did you say only *6* years to be a Orthopedic spine surgeon??? That's not a lot and I'm thankful!!! I've been looking up how long does it take to become an orthopedic surgeon and it would say 13 years or something like that and I've been question what I want to do just because of how long it takes. Please tell me the exact or estimate of years for each type orthopedic surgeon. I guess I'm a little confused on the years.
@antoniowebbmd
@antoniowebbmd 7 жыл бұрын
+Alexis Fowler Hi, Thanks for the comment and watching! To become any type of orthopedic surgeon it requires 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, and 5 years of residency. To specialize to be a spine surgeon, Foot/Ankle surgeon, Hand surgeon, Shoulder surgeon, etc (who are all orthopedic surgeons), you have to do an additional year called a fellowship. So, it takes 14 years to be a spine surgeon. Check out this video here about the different types of orthopedic surgeons: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oImTmJ2OjbWBsJY Im glad you found the video helpful! How much of a disadvantage is it to decide on a competitive specialty in year 3 vs year 1 of med school? In terms of being behind on amount of publications, extracurriculars for that specialty?

Question about Sports Medicine. I plan on doing a Rural Family Medicine track. (Yeah I'm capable of anything, but it's the one that has always spoke to me, ever since I was kid, and even after 30 years in the workforce, changing careers to medicine, it's still where I want to be.) Does it even make sense to do a sports medicine fellowship after residency? Or would I be better served with something like OB/GYN or Pain/Substance management? There's only so much someone who's not ortho trained can do, (am I right about that?)

It sure would be nice if some Ortho students would look into the VERY underserved population of Osteogenesis Imperfecta! It might not be as sexy as some of the other specialties, but it is something that most doctors, read a chapter about in med school, most orthos, maybe a little more, but the patients get screwed by all of the money hungry pigs who don't care about learning how to deal with our very unique metabolic bone issues! It wasn't so bad growing up in the 80's when there wasn't so much information available, and I was a kid fracturing several times a year, but now that I have two children with OI, it sure as hades would be nice if more of you wanna be docs would actually look into serving the underserved OI community!!! Thank you for reading my rant, those of you who will spend the time that is...
