Typically New grads do not get hired in the ICU or CCU... you would have to start your career on a med-surg floor or lower before becoming eligible for an ICU unit to look at your resume. After you spend a year or so in the ICU or CCU you may take the next steps to apply to a CRNA program... My aunt is an Anesthesiologist MD that is what was explained to me by her and other colleagues. If anyone has heard different please advise me otherwise... Thank you fellow Healthcare Providers :-)

Why is it recommended that you get experience in ICU, NICU etc to do anesthesia? Thank you
@justelynnnjoelle2 жыл бұрын
To understand the tremendous amount of pressure that will be placed on you while on assignment for a case. ICU experience is required prior for CRNA school applications so that the evaluating board knows that the applicants are somewhat familiar with the mental taxation that will be placed on them. It is also required because in addition to the mental fatigue, you will have a much more specific scope of practice which will carry more responsibility and weigh more on legality since you are essentially responsible for keeping the patient at ease and sensationally unharmed prior and post operation. CRNAs will need to have extensive knowledge in MANY drug types and understand the timing and usage for each one depending on the current state of the patient.

What are the differences between CRNA and Anesthiology Assistant (AA)? Also, since CRNA programs are shifting to doctorate degrees, will AA programs switch to doctorate too or will they be phased out?
@JustCharnelle6 жыл бұрын
A CRNA is a registered nurse with a bachelors degree in nursing and at least 1-2 years of critical care experience plus 2-3 years of additional schooling for a masters or doctorate degree. AAs are required to have a bachelors degree (in any major) plus some premed courses. They are not required to have any experience. They then go through about 2 years of schooling. Once completed, AA’s are required to work under the direction of a anesthesiologist. Currently, they are only allowed to practice in 16 states.

Also, since CRNAs will now have doctorates will they have full equivalency to actual Anesthesiologists (MDs and DOs)? I wonder how this will change the profession and affect the specialty of anesthesiology
@LigmaMale696 жыл бұрын
They won't, the DNP is being pushed so that CRNA's can be prepared to teach and be a better researcher for implementing evidence based practice. It doesn't make them able to practice independently in states that currently don't allow it or anything. I personally think it's a waste, I want to go back to be a CRNA, but won't be able to make it in before the DNP requirement is implemented. I have no plans on teaching or doing research, so it's just an extra time and financial cost.
@ericrenteriaear6 жыл бұрын
IamMe9121 A DNP (Doctorate in nursing) is a lot different then being a medical doctor. Just like an English professor with a PhD is different than an MD. Disclaimer: My mom has a DNP
@JustCharnelle6 жыл бұрын
CRNAs are trained and have the ability to do the same job as an anesthesiologist. There are CRNA-only facilities where the CRNA does everything from regional to cardiac anesthesia without an anesthesiologist being present. However a DNP is a nursing doctorate degree which is different from a medical doctor degree. So in terms of the degree received, that’s not equivalent.
@87docbrad6 жыл бұрын
@@JustCharnelle Although Anesthesiologists and CRNAs both provide anesthesia, they have significantly different roles and funds of knowledge. Anesthesiologists are Physicians first and able to manage all aspects of patient care including managing ICU's and taking care of extremely sick patients. The care-team model works quite well.

So whats the diff. btwn a CRNA and perfusionist?...cuz it seems like a CRNA does the perfusionist's job to a degree.
@JustCharnelle5 жыл бұрын
A perfusionist manages ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) or the cardiopulmonary bypass machine during cardiac or other surgeries. The CRNA does not use these devices. In the OR, we manage the ventilator and administration of anesthetic gases as well as monitoring the patient and vital signs throughout.
@ghanamafia71995 жыл бұрын
