Eric Prydz used quite a large sample of this song for something he had written. When he took the song to Winwood for approval, Steve was impressed by the technical side of Prydz's production. Although from a musical point of view Steve admitted "it was not exactly his cup of tea", he offered to re-record the vocal part of the sample for Prydz. Which gave the song some more gravitas.

They released an updated production of this song in the late 80s (not the sampled Eric Prydz track). Sounds a lot better.

They redo was so much better. The snare track was so much stronger and the synth is too strong in the original; actually gets in the way of the vocals!

Love this song, and love that people always recognize the chorus from the Eric Prydz sample. You should check out Winwood's video for "Help Me, Angel" just to get an idea of how many instruments the dude actually plays.

Steve Winwood has a wide and varied career in music, starting at the age of 15 with The Spencer Davis Group, he sings lead on their biggest hit, "Gimme Some Lovin'". You should also check out his other band Traffic, his singing and keyboard skills are highlighted with a rock/jazz fusion, great songs to check out are, "The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys","Empty Pages","Walking in the Wind","Rock n' Roll Stew","Dream Gerard", and "Dear Mr Fantasy".

Your reaction at the chorus, lol. I’d heard the song over the radio at a restaurant for the first time in years but couldn’t place it. I then jumped on KZbin and went through 80s playlists until I came across on of Steve’s songs and recognized the voice. Sure enough. I had to know!! 😆

You've heard this and Higher Love, and that's it, I think. His three biggest songs before Arc of a Diver (solo) were those two and Roll With It. My fav of the three is Roll With It. Higher Love is pretty much straight rock sounding, Valerie is more a pop type song, and Roll With It is more funky, and totally catchy like these. You would love it. Steve Winwood started his career in the 60s with Spencer Davis Group singing several hits by them - at 15 -16 years old! 😳 He then had hits with Clapton in Blind Fait, and more with Traffic and a couple other bands. He's truly phenomenal.
