This song was written about the great singer Valerie Carter. She sang back up and recorded for a number of artists including James Taylor. I see James Taylor every time he performs in my general area (which is almost every year) Valerie was almost always there singing back up. Then one year, Valerie was not at the show. And I don't remember her ever being back again. It turns out that Valerie had a problem with addiction. There was a video of Valerie getting released from her obligation to the court for some sort of drug issue - or something like that. James Taylor came to the hearing and sang You've Got a Friend to Valerie in the courtroom. I'll never forget it. RIP beautiful Valerie

Technically, you've done him twice before this... you did "Higher Love", but you also did "Can't Find My Way Home" by Blind Faith, of which he was a member. He was also in The Spencer Davis Group, and Traffic. Some of Steve's other great solo hits include "Roll With It", "Back in the High LIfe Again", and "The Finer Things". My personal favorite of his (after "Valerie") is "Freedom Overspill". It's a very underrated song, but a true banger! Also - I think this is the 1982 original version of the song. A remix was done in 1987, and THAT version hit the Billboard Top 10. It had more drums, and several other instruments as well. It was richer, fuller, and I think you'd love that version more than this one.

"Roll With It" is Winwood connecting to the music he loved when he was younger. To go from a 60s musician to a solo artist having hits in the 80s is pretty astounding in its difficulty. Other 80s artists could not have done "roll with it." Winwood could because that music is in his back pocket and he can easily execute it because he's not just a singer but a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter.

This is one of his 80s solo pop hits. His career started back in the 63 as a teenager with the Spencer Davis Group. Songs such as Gimme some Lovin has a R&B sound. Songs from his band Traffic such as Dear Mr Fantasy and The Low Spark of the High Heeled Boys has more of a Psychedelic sound and 80s Arc of a Diver more pop. Long eclectic career. His vocals are very distinctive.

You, really, AREN'T hitting Steve Winwood's "gold standard" stuff, yet {solo stuff, I mean! OUTSIDE of: Traffic, Blind Faith, Spencer Davis Group!]. His sophomore solo album: ARC OF A DIVER is THE place to go! 🔥🔥🔥🔥 "While You See A Chance" [his first major single!]; "Arc Of A Diver" [the quietly susurrating title-track!] 🤘🔥 and "Spanish Dancer"! 🔥🔥 THESE are THE tracks, for you! (Of course, you shouldn't miss out on his (I guess now it's called "a collab." 🙄🙄 ) song with the great Joe Walsh [Eagles, Barnstorm, James Gang] entitled: "Split Decision". \m/ \m/) . 🔥

Wow, too bad You didn’t hear what I heard the first time I heard this song. That crying out in passion for his Valerie is what made this song one of my favs. I didn’t know the backstory until recently when Valerie Carter passed away during the COVID lockdowns. Valerie was an amazing back up singer during the 70’ & 80’s & was highly sought after by the most popular & talented musicians of the day. You can see her & her beauty in James Taylor’s ‘Live at the Beacon Theater’ concert. She’s the cute blonde in the short black dress with the infectious smile. Her life was a little tortured & she had her struggles as many do in that business & people like James Taylor were there to help her out of it. Valerie had such an impact on singer songwriters that in the business she was called on a lot & 2 major artist’s wrote & sang a song about her. One of course was ‘Valerie’ by Steve Winwood who was taken by her beauty & talent but then like the wind she was gone out of his life as he cries out ‘call on me, Valerie, come and see….me. I’m the same boy I used to be.’ The other artist who wrote & sang about Valerie was Jackson Browne who wrote the hit ‘That Girl could Sing’ in 1980. Rest In Peace & may God richly gracefully love Valerie Carter.

Spencer Davis Group (at 17 years old!),Traffic,Blind Faith (with Clapton and Ginger Baker),his solo career...one of the most prolific careers in popular music history. Oh,and on his solo albums, more often than not he played ALL the instruments.

Well, you've only done Steve as a SOLOIST once…you have done him in Blind Faith. You still need to do Steve with the Spencer Davis Group, and with Traffic (both the original version with Dave Mason, and the reunited group, after Blind Faith). *DO TRAFFIC! DO TRAFFIC!! DO TRAFFIC ALREADY!!!* Just so I can shut up about it. Steve's chronology goes like this: Spencer Davis Group, then Traffic (with Mason), then Blind Faith, then the reunited Traffic, then solo. Suggestions: For the Spencer Davis Group: "Give Me Some Lovin'" For Traffic v.1 : "Feelin' Alright", "Dear Mr. Fantasy" For Blind Faith: "Presence of the Lord", "Well Alright" (Buddy Holly cover) For Traffic v. 2: "The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys", "Freedom Rider", "Rock & Roll Stew" For Steve solo: "Back in the High Life Again". (also Warren Zevon does an amazing cover of this), "When You See A Chance" And many more. Also, as I've mentioned the difference between Traffic with Dave Mason and without, I should note that Dave's solo work ("We Just Disagree", "Only You Know and I know") deserves a listen, too. Let's see, I should probably make an alphabetical list of artists you need to hit: A- Argent B- Blackfoot, perhaps (a lot of candidates here) C- Cracker F- Free K- King Crimson L- Little Feat M- The Michael Stanley Band N- Nazz (and Todd Rundgren in general, including Utopia and his solo work) S- Spirit T- Traffic U- Uriah Heep V- Violent Femmes X- X Don't know if I'll get to all 26, but I'll work on it. (And yes, I could have put Dave Mason as "D", but IMO that's cheating.) (And yes, I could have done the Sex Pistols at S, but let's be real…these folks aint doing the Sex Pistols. LMAO.)

Winwood is an incredible artist. This song is one of his weakest hits, not that it isn't good. I'd suggest: Talking Back to the Night, Arc of a Diver, the awesome Roll With It, The Finer Things, and my favorite Spanish Dancer. Now.... as far as his work with Traffic: The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys is iconic, Glad/Freedom Rider, Empty Pages, 40,000 Headmen, Feelin' Alright, Shootout at the Fantasy Factory and the atmospheric Evening Blue. Please don't miss Winwood's work with Traffic, it's exquisite.
