As I was about to come off duty at 20:00, we had an emergency blues and twos call from the control room asking for an urgent transfer of blood from the blood bank at the Mater, to a patient at RVH who was bleeding out on the operating table. Join me as I fire up Mike Zero Two for a late-evening dash down Belfast's Crumlin Road and on to a relatively deserted West Link for the short run to the trauma centre at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Those are hobby riders who go into biscuit cans for hibernation and forget all training. 4 season commuters that face city traffic just make this checking a habit and do it automatically. Especially pro drivers/riders. I know at 120 km/h I have a 3 sec blind spot ( a lot , math the cars). Would love to have that central windscreen mirror she has.

In England and Wales, blood bikes are not authorised to use blue lights (Sched. 19, Road Safety Act) though some Chief Constables turn a blind eye. Our colleagues in Eire are trained by the Garda Siochana and are then authorised to use blue lights (only on clinical requirement) Scots law is different and blood bikes in Scotland can use blue lights. Every night of the year there are blood bikes transferring blood, samples, platelets, plasma, reagents, and (during the day) donor breast milk. Give us space and let us through; we may be having the ride of YOUR life tomorrow.

Well done 👍We don't use blue lights on our Bloodbikes in England and are explicitly not allowed to use them (some of the blood cars and bikes do have them fitted, such as the BMW rtp), however blue light trained riders like this and drivers go beyond the training and testing we have to do (IAM or RoSPA for us), so fair play to them being able to do this. I (as an advanced rider and Bloodbike volunteer) have to set the very highest standards of road safety when volunteering on call and even our Bloodbike hig vis decals are seemingly invisible to some motorists I've encountered...

I have now watched several of these blues and twos from this rider. I remain appalled at his disregard for red lights etc and the reactions of car drivers to avoid him having an accident ie he was relying upon their reaction to his riding. I have riden for 28 years . I passed my IAM advanced test with a First a few weeks ago . I sat it primarily with the intention of volunteering for the Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes. I had their induction run today on one of their fleet FJR 1300. The weather was wet . As on all my previous IAM observed rides and the IAM test itself by a very experienced ex police instructor the main point was safe and legal.I am pleased to say that was the clear instruction from my Blood Bikes instructor today. I am an experienced rider now with the confidence of knowing that I am safe and skilled enough to achieve a First level advanced pass on the IAM test. I am not trained to ride through red lights on a blues and two's scenario . In these rides as shown by this rider there seems to be no urgency ie emergency event and his ride back to station again deploying blues and two's and putting himself and other road users at risk is , in my view, indulgent machismo on a bike that is not justified. Restraint coupled with progress when required is the benchmark of a safe rider. I am looking forwards to volunteer work with the Blood Bikes but I cannot begin to understand why this guy's riding videos are being viewed as anything other than how NOT to do it.

Nobody. Our Blood Bike group was born out of necessity during the ‘flag protests’ of 2013/14, which saw HSC blood bank couriers stranded in non-moving traffic. We had to approach community leaders from both sides of the sectarian divide, source ex-PSNI motorbikes, and it was all done with the buy-in of the HSC and PSNI leadership within a matter of days. The chief constable was a great support and in addition to giving us full exemption for blues and twos use, he also arranged for PSNI traffic instructors to put us through the appropriate training.

Wtf, why and when? When they cross a red light with a camera installed at the intersection? Here in Germany you would rather get in trouble for not advancing into the intersection and making way. Actually Garrie your presumptions are very incorrect. Yes, Blood Bikes are considered charities, however they are afforded the same exemptions from the use of emergency equipment and speed limits when performing duties on behalf of the NHS. Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 (for blue lights) and Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 (for sirens) provide specific exemptions for vehicles used as 'ambulances' and vehicles with _''the purpose of providing a response to an emergency at the request of an NHS ambulance service''_ As Blood Bikes are 'providing a response to an emergency at the request of an NHS ambulance service, they are exempt.

Not the best response driving I have seen. When you come to the traffic lights on the roundabout you were shaking your head at the cars. Remember your the one with the exemptions and disobeying traffic rules, you should have waited behind the cars lights on siren off until it was safe to proceed, if you would have damaged them cars it would be you at fault. The cars have to move out of the way when it's safe to do so without them going through reds or being (bullied) to move I.e sat behind with siren on. I know they could have moved a little but that's my only complaint. I'm ex paramedic and response driving dinstructor.

@BMW R1200GS Adventure well thank you for your service mate appreciate it. Its one hell of a service, funny thing is up in newcastle bloodbikes can ride on blues only no siren and have to obey every traffic law so if they come to a red they have to stop. But even the ambulance service had/has its blue light chasers who just want to go everywhere flat out its crazy.

Fair point, and very well observed. I strive for perfection on every ride and often, I get that, but on this one, my humanity got the better of me and I let the mask slip; a tight gap, but having been a courier in London for three years during its glory days, it was a calculated risk and I knew I’d make it. I fucked up though, and let my frustration get to me with the slight shake of the head. I put this video up, because it is what it is, and I don’t only show ‘perfection’. Thank you for taking the time to comment, you made good points.
