I'd love to have an antenna on top of my house, but I'm terrified of heights and I don't want to hire someone to install it because I'm worried it'll need adjusting and I'll have to call them out again. I bought the clear stream after watching your review and have it mounted to my wall on the opposite side of the house from the direction of the broadcast towers. I'm not more than 40 miles from the towers. It actually made a great deal of difference even in that location, I'm able to pick up twice as many channels and every channel I'm interested in comes in nice and clear. The signal hasn't dropped at all after hours of watching. Overall it was a satisfactory solution over my old flappy flat antenna. :)

I bought the Antop AT-401bv at a huge discount. Ive seen it on Amazon for $125 and at Walmart online for like $59, but found it at a local discount store for $29 bucks. I had a small antenna and got about 65 channels, hooked the Antop up and installed it outside about 10 feet high and once I scanned for channels got 185 channels and have not gotten any signal loss. I highly recommend it.

The finger "quote" signs are always my favorite part of your vids, lol. But seriously, I would suggest that anyone cutting the cord just pick- up an old-school pair of rabbit ears (flea market, boot sale etc) to try out first before spending more on the supposedly high-tech, err "digital" antennas. I canceled my cable a few weeks ago and my 20-year-old amplified RCA rabbit ears are working just fine with my OLED TV.

I got this Antop Antenna only it's a different model. Mine is taller and thinner than this one but still an Antop Bigboy. I had a Mohu ( a flat antenna that hangs on the wall that you tell people not to buy but I bought it anyhow) and it actually did pretty well in my area as I picked up 45- 48 channels depending on the weather. But the Bigboy intrigued me and I got one and put it inside my bedroom right under where I had placed the Mohu and with it I now get 63 channels. ( expect more possibly? On June 8 when Baltimore and perhaps DC switch to ATSC 3.0) So all in all I am extremely pleased with the Antop Bigboy.

@@LouLou-pr1lk Antop has a lot of similar models and its website list the dimensions of the package and not the antenna. The 401BV looks narrower, which may account for comments on AVSForums of the 400BV performing better. The SBS models are intriguing since they have adjustable gain. Are you also in the DC/Balto market area?

@@caseyhartman7094 Yes, It has the VHF side poles. They screw on the sides. I looked on the back of my antenna for the model number. It says - AT- 401BV , it says indoor/ outdoor . I think the one Tyler is showing in the video is an older model. Mine is a 2020 . Not sure if they released a newer model, I would have to go to their website and look. But the AT-401BV is taller and thinner than the one in this video. I was worried that I got the wrong model because it was cheaper at the time I bought it but I am very pleased with it. I even had tried the Clearstream 1M and before that a Clearstream 4 Max that got good reviews from Tyler but they didn't work as well as the Antop I have. Yes I live in Pikesville just a half mile from the city limit of Baltimore. So I am very close to the towers. The difference between the the Mohu antenna and the Clearstream for that matter was I had trouble picking up the DC channels. I could get them if the weather was right but they were very unstable and unpredictable. Now since I got this Bigboy I picked them right up. I went from 47 to 63 channels. I am excited to see what if anything happens after June 8 when Baltimore and I think DC? ( still Unclear about DC) goes to ATSC 3.0 . I may or may not pick up even more??? I went and bought a Sony X900H With the ATSC 3.0 tuner built in, so I'm ready for it.

@@lonniewilliamson2569 Antop has a 402BV, but their product description lacks details to learn the differences between similar models other than the dipoles being closer to the bottom. As usual a very good review. That being said, I would like to see you get thru a review one time without trashing flat indoor antennas. If you live in an apartment like I do you don’t have a choice. If you did some fair reviews on some flat smaller antennas that apartment dwellers have to use, I would bet you would double your number of subscribers. And no I do not work for a flat antenna company. I am just a customer who has had two of them and they have both worked great. The signal I get from my antennas on OTA channels is better than what you get from streaming, cable or satellite.

@@MorryB I live in an urban area. In a one bedroom apartment. My main TV Which is a Samsung Q60T I have a flat antenna attached to it with the cable that runs from my TV to my living room window and the antenna is attached to the window. It brings in about 50 channels. Beautiful signal on the major networks and a good signal on the sub channels. The brand I have is U MUST HAVE which Amazon is selling for $28.95. The antenna man labeled one of his videos on KZbin as a review for this particular antenna and he did not review it at all. He just trashed it. He did not test it to see how it worked. He will always favor outdoor antennas because that’s what he does for a living. And the so-called indoor outdoor antennas that he showed on this video are so ugly you would not want to have them Inside your house. They are strictly for outdoor use. The one thing I do agree with Antenna Man on in regards to flat antennas is that they will not bring in a signal that is 250 miles away and you will not get a 4K signal. Probably about an 80 mile range would be the limit. Nobody broadcasts in 4K. However you will get very close to a full HD picture on the major networks. To get the best results you need to attach it to a window that faces the broadcast tower. My second TV in the bedroom I have a rabbit ears attached to it that I bought at Best Buy for eight dollars. It brings in about 50 channels but there is a little bit of pixelation on occasion because I don’t have it attached or sitting on the window. It is an insignia antenna Attached to a 24 inch insignia fire TV that I bought for $100 at Best Buy. For a bedroom TV it works great.

In some locations flat antennas might receive VHF and UHF signals well, but those are the exceptions. Apartment and condo dwellers have other options like Antennas Direct 1 Max, 2Max, Max-V, Antop Big Boy or mini tower Big Boy, Channel Master Omni+, and Televes Dinova Boss Mix. The latter is very low profile, fits on a shelf, and performs remarkably well. If the single dipole isn't strong enough to receive VHF stations, a Clearstream 5 is compact to be an indoor solution.

Tyler, I found an app called Signal GH that only works with HD Home Run. I have two of these, the two tuner Extend and the four tuner Quarto 4K. I connect one at the antenna and run CAT 6 to my router and a second in the living room also connected to the router to compare signal degradation. But you could connect one to a generic antenna and a second to the antenna being reviewed and show the difference in signals between the two
@MrMikey1273
@MrMikey1273 3 жыл бұрын
Actually using 2 homeruns with two antennas pointed at different markets if you were between two would probably work out well. You could only select the channels each tuner got best on its antenna the apps would see them all in one list. I used to use the homerun prime on cable and you could pair those together or pair a cable card tuner with an OTA homerunHD. Now that they have a nicer DVr I might go back to them if they come out with ATSC 3.0 in my area. I do like my TiVo but if they don't come out with an ATSC 3.0 in a few years it might be time to switch back.

I have this one with a Kitzech kt500 preamp and a Channel master 8 way distribution amplifier. About 15 miles from one cluster of towers and the furthest towers are in Canada are 55 miles away. Zero problems in Detroit metro area. I would suggest getting the unamplified AT-400V model so you can buy a better preamp. The preamp on the 400VB sucks and doesn't really let you adjust for overload. Yes I bought mine because the wife complained about "ugly" yagi antennas. I also was mostly concerned about getting CTV and CBC in Canada as my US towers are very close to my house. This antenna pulls in the furthest Canadian stations without an issue. I even experimented with pointing the tower due south towards Toledo and was able to pull in all the Toledo stations without an issue.

I've only seen the 400V available directly from Antop at a close price to the 400BV. I read comments that the Winegard LN-200 and Kitzech premp are better than the supplied smart pass amp. I wonder if the newer smart boost that come with the SBS models is better.

@@caseyhartman7094 The SBS800 is the same as the 400bv but with a variable gain preamp. There are two components to this. The external preamp module and the gain receiver inside the antenna. The V model just doesn't have the gain receiver. You can't really use an aftermarket preamp with an amplified antenna of this design (as Tyler pointed out in previous videos). The only pain in the ass thing about the Kitztech preamp (where the preamp is mounted to the antenna mast) is you have to get up on a ladder or your roof to adjust the gain dial.

After watching this review I purchased a Big Boy, but I went with the similar looking ANTOP AT-800SBSJ. It is the only indoor antenna that has worked well in my hilly area about 40 miles from TV towers. Highly recommend. But it works significantly better mounted outside just above my roof line, using a 20 inch J-mount fastened to the roof fascia. It's on one of my lower roofs, which I could reach with a ladder, in a location that's not an eyesore for my neighbors. It's probably 10 feet below the peak of my house. I ran the coax cable along the outside of my house. Where it enters the house, thru the wall, I used a ground block to ground the cable to earth. Is this necessary, or recommended? But I read the mast (and antenna) should also be grounded to earth (best would be to use the ground at the house electrical box). I have a QUESTION: Since the ANTOP is plastic, can it even be grounded? How? And since I'm only using a short J-mount, does that even qualify as being a mast? And it's well below the top of my house. Does it needed grounded by building electrical codes???

Try putting a splitter near the TV it helps to stabilize the signal, use good cables. put a 3ft piece from splitter to TV in the in and then a piece from Antenna to the out on the splitter.

Thanks again for the review. I would never use an antenna like this outdoors. Would use indoors and would have like the review to cover what the antenna would do indoors by a window compared to other indoor antennas. My guess anything solid like this antenna would not do well in windy conditions, meaning it would get ripped off in high winds.

Made a beautiful UHF antenna that works flawlessly. I live at one of the lowest points in town and pick up stations 64 miles away. Beer cans, 18 gauge speaker wire, and plastic hangars... It does have a transformer and I've got the pole grounded. If I ground my amplifier does that also ground my antenna? P.S. can I email you a picture? Maybe you could throw me a tip and make a hilarious video on it.

As an indoor antenna, it would be visually pleasing. However, if outdoors it seems the large flat area would be a problem if in a windy area. (As for someones spouse complaining about putting an antenna outside, just tell them it is for better wi-fi outside so they can use their tablet. As if they would know the difference...LOL)

Active elements should be expressed in width, not length. Why? They always face perpendicular to the signal. For antennas with a boom, that dimension is length. A wider element will tune a lower frequency, but not if you position it "the long way." In that case it acts like a tiny dipole.

My experiences are simple and factual results.My sister lives next door but has a very high house,she gets decent reception with average run of the mill store bought Antenna.Using the same antenna and trying others and my house is lower and not posting them on the roof ,my results are the yare all CRAP.So you need to post the antenna up on th roof unless you have a clear path to stations which is unlikely if in the city and in closely knit houses. So my sister gets about 30-40 clear stations on on eantenna direction and about 15-20 on another.Your mileage will vary depending on how close and direct the number of stations are in yoru location but i wouldn't expect much at all out of these advertised antennas.

Any videos on how to get reception from multiple directions? I live in between two cities, so the majority of the towers are about 180 degrees apart, but there are also some that are about 20 to 40 degrees off from that (but they're things like ION and PBS, so if I can't get those I can live without them). I don't know if I can get an antenna that can pick up signals coming from both directions, of if I'd need two antennas pointing in opposite directions and somehow connect them together.

I am not sure comparing to the 2 previous tested models is helpful. There is a review where a guy says this performed as well as a DB8-E. Back in 2018 I installed a similar antenna, the Antop Antenna AT401BV. Also available on amazon.com. I installed this for my grandma who live 45 miles east of Pittsburgh, PA in Elders Ridge. I had it up on a pole mounted to the house so it is ~30' up. It did so well pulling in the stations that my parents that live in the next house asked me to help them. They are in the next house but down the hill so I would need to get an antenna for them much higher and there are trees in the line of sight. So a bit of a mess. In the end I end up buy 500` coax, high grade coax splitters, grounding blocks, and lighting surge arrestors. Along with the amplifers they already had I added them to my grandmothers TV antenna by running the coax between the houses. Everyone was thrilled with all the new channels they got plus the improved reception of the channels they had before.

The people who complain about antennas on a roof are far more likely to be in the board of your HOA, who apparently look for any excuse to fine members. Also, of course, landlords may not want to see outdoor antennas on the roofs of their buildings. Significant others, as actual members of the family treated as equals and contributing $$$ to the budget will be happy with improved pictures on the TV.
