AntennaMan - You'd be proud of me. We lost cable during the recent tropical storm (Isaias) out here, east of NYC, about 30 miles away. I made my own "4k high definition digital 1080/720 compatible" /sarc antenna with a few yards of 20 gage solid copper wire. I fashioned it into four dipole elements, three in the range of 9" to 10 1/2" (half wave for UHF 24 to 40) and one 32" (half wave VHF 7 for WABC). Clipped it to the curtain rod in the living room (window has fiberglass screen). Bent the wires of each to form an "arrow" of about 30 degrees and pointed it toward the transmitters in lower Manhattan. For the larger ABC element (VHF), I bent the wire to point the arrow a bit more north to get their transmitter in Times Square. I didn't add a reflector since it'd get too unwieldly for a living room fixture. Ran it thru a 300-75 ohm transformer and coax to the TV. I got 35 digital channels (lots of multicasts) - crystal clear and stable. Later on, I got one of those junk ClearTV mousepad things to see if it'd do better than my Frankenstein antenna. In the same exact location, it got 22 channels. VHF totally disappeared. I wanted to share this to reaffirm that you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. Antennas are just pieces of metal and the size of elements - and the location of the antenna - determines what channels you get.

Thanks for this. My neighbor just asked me to help her setup her Magnavox antenna that makes the same claims (amplified signal, 4K HDTV, insane distance). I had been wondering about how legit these things are after I unplugged the power supply and there was no change *at* *all* in the signal strength. I had expected the signal to drop out completely.

I am reminded of the evening I and other technicians convinced an apprentice that a stainless steel fork made an FM antenna. There was no antenna on the receiver, so somebody stuck a fork in the antenna jack, and it worked, 10 miles from Hartford. Our rationale was that it wasn't the size that mattered, but the material. It was a rare type of metal.

I tried one of these antennas in 2018 for about a month. Cost was more like $90. It didn't get as many channels, AND as dependably as a Clearstream antenna I paid about $45 dollars for in 2010. This model of antenna brought in NO channels more than 30 miles away. I live in a relatively flat area of Texas and it brought in a total of 16 stations - on it's best day. My 8 year old Clearstream brought in 22-26 channels - in the same attic location. So I returned this one for a refund.

Just bought an antenna just like that ( one of the Andtop big boy models) and just set it INSIDE my house next to my tv and was surprised how well it works. I had a Mohu Glide that picked up 38- 43 depending on the weather and the Andtop picked up 54 right away. I am in the Baltimore area and with this it seems to be able to pick up a few of the DC channels that the Mohu struggled with.

@Kirk Moore I live on the Northern Oregon Coast, about 250 miles South of Vancouver BC and 150 miles North of Eugene. I have Korner 9.2 FM Yagi I bought via Germany a few years ago. Only 81 inches long, but a great antenna. From Vancouver CFMI 101.1 and CHQM-103.5 are regulars. CFRO 100.5 is another. Plus several others come and go. Eugene regularly gives me 99.1 and the others come and go. To the East, KPQ 102.1 Wentatchee WA is regular. So the dial is pretty active here. Better with Trops as I get Coos Bay then. Fun FM stuff. I wish I could do that with TV! Got lots of E Skip through the years, but for Trops with a Winegard 6065 (125 inches long) I heard Eureka CA and Spokane WA on Trops.

I just opened up the circuit for the amplifier in a "Free 4K HD Unlimited" Magnavox antenna and was surprisedto see that it has less than 99¢ worth of parts inside of it. The input signal connects to only three components: a 10 Henry coil goes to +5V DC; a 1 nF capacitor goes to the output; and a 1A diode also goes to the output. That's it! It seems the inductor is the only thing that could plausibly be amplifying the signal, since the other two are filters, but I don't know much about RF. @AntennaMan, have you opened up these gizmos? It this typically how an antenna amplifier works?

They basically confirmed what you said, since they used the word diameter, not distance or radius. The antenna is located between two major city such as New York and Philadelphia approximately 50 miles between each market or within the 100 mile diameter you should be able to pickup both of the major stations depending where the antenna is aimed. However, you won't be able to pickup New York in Philadelphia or vice versa. So the advertisement is legal, just mis-leading.

It does not really matter if you scan 1 channel or infinite channels because it still does not mean you will be able to watch them. I am in woodville Texas, lots of trees, with a antenna 30 feet up I can scan hundreds of channels but the same 5 channels are all that ACTUALLY play. 4-1, 4-2, 4-3, 4-4 and 4-5! That would be dabl, tbd, comet(has sliders) stadium and charge. Most channels you scan mostly play out dated shows and movies also duplicate channels!

Hell I have transmitted to the ISS with this type of antenna built for the 144 to 148 MHz band. The most expensive part of the build is the coax cable, (75 Ohm 50 Ohm if you are going to transmit) and the UV protective calking. Antennas shouldn't be selected based solely on distance from the broadcast towers. What you have to look at is how strong or weak your signals are and buy an antenna designed for them. If your signals are strong, a small outdoor antenna is fine. If they are fair, you will need a medium sized antenna. It's not about the distance but rather the signal strength. Some antennas will pick up TV stations up to 80 miles away but it depends on the reception report at a given location. See my other videos for information on how trees may affect TV signals.

Antenna noob here. So I tried using a normal 3 way splitter as a combiner for 3 antennas. One is a Clearstream 2v without the VHF bar. Everything seem decent when I have 2 plugged in, but all three and things get choppy on select channels. The other 2 are a Clearstream 4V and a radio shack bar variety. I run the out coaxial, through an amp, to a digital coverter box and then send it to my projector via HDMI.This setup is unfortunately indoor as I live in a studio. I ordered a new, supposed 3 way combiner splitter that got good reviews. Has anyone out here successfully added 3 antennas via splitter. Could that missing VHF bar for the Clearstream 2V be fouling thing up. Anyway, sorry for the book.

Combining multiple antennas usually results in multipath interference which weakens all channels. I have a video on this topic.

My friend has one similar to that. We are at least 40 miles from broadcast towers. At any time he can pick up at least 40 channels.
