ANTS vs. TERMITES | I Filmed Nature's Biggest War In My Yard

A termite nuptial flight happened in my yard and so I took the opportunity to use a light to lure termite king and queen alates into the terrarium, known as Polyrhaxia, belonging to my pet spiny ants (named the Blades of Midas). The epic war that broke out was insane, but despite the very intense things I saw, it made me realize a very profound and deep truth about Mother Nature. Hope you enjoy this week's episode! Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution. #Ants #Termites

Honestly, the relationship between ants and termites is fascinating. They are so similar and yet so different. One coming from more wasp like ancestors the other from more cockroach like ones. Ants being more warlike and agricultural, while termites are more progressive and industrial. It's weird really how nature can create two vastly different types of creatures yet they function so similarly on the surface. Really makes you wonder what alien life is like elsewhere

Right at the end, I was just going to ask if you'd caught any pairs, and you answered my question as soon as I hit the comment button! You're absolutely right about the numbers game, and how on the grander scale it works to the termites' advantage - along with those animals who'll feed well of course. But there's one extra plus point for so many being caught. There's only so much room & food for new colonies to settle into. I don't suppose that each bonded pair will fly particularly far from their original nests, even with the males and females coming from different colonies. The further they have to travel, the less likely they are to survive long enough to find an appropriate territory and settle down. Over the years the meeting place for the nuptial flight is probably going to move a bit further from the first ever place, with alates having a bit more undisturbed land in which to dig. But having hundreds of new colonies within the "safe radius" of the meeting place will end up with a lot of them not finding any spare space, particularly those who meet up later into the flight's time. Therefore those unfortunate alates will end up as someone's dinner! It's also not great for farmers if they end up with hundred of hard earth mounds in their fields, so they'll have to destroy a lot of them. Similarly, with too much local competition, some colonies will run out of food. So in the end, it's less cruel on nature's part to reduce the numbers when there are "only" the royal couples and no babies or older offspring to be seen. At least that's my thought on the subject. Excellent photography, btw. I keep forgetting to tell you how impressed I am by your work. Have you tried using an endoscope to film inside a nest yet? I got hubby one from Amazon so he can see inside the dark, difficult parts of his boat, especially the hull and engine. It's plugged into his laptop and he can record what it sees. You could have a ton of fun with it (and it's not expensive! If it were, I wouldn't have got one for him lol).

What a fantastic video! I've been a sub for almost 2 years, and Mikey, you're so great at telling a story, and showing us! The tone, the details, the insight... It's truly remarkable, and so beautiful. Yes, a bit dark at points [like in this one], but respectful, not gratuitous or exploitative, and we get to see the silver lining. This is definitely one of my new favourite AC videos! (So many, I couldn't ever pick just one! Haha. But for examples, the Sprites saga and tale of The Blue Ant are up there on the rewatch [and recommended] list!) Thank you, Mikey. And not just for the amazing videos. Your work has been the key to help me conquer the strange ant-phobia that struck out of nowhere a few years ago and haunted me for so long. It's gone! Just yesterday I was digging in the garden and the soil felt extra... spicy. (Not painful; really, just a bit spicy.) I realised that was the formic acid defence from a bunch of harmless little red carpenter ants. _I didn't panic!_ And I wasn't angry with them. I just went to dig elsewhere and let them move away - I even apologised to them for my blunder! ^_^ No eggs, at least; they were just scouts. And they proved there was no need to fear; they did indeed vacate that area & didn't come in the building. No poison or anything needed; they understood "this is not a place to nest". No harm, no foul. Just an accidental bump-into situation! As someone who loved ants as a kid, I'm so glad that silly phobia is gone. I truly love ants again! :) Ant _and_ termite love forever! ❤︎

What's amazing is that these dances, in some shape or form, have been going on since the Mesozoic - these should have been shown in _Prehistoric Planet,_ really! Very likely then that even insectivorous dinosaurs in termite-heavy ecosystems (alvarezsaurs, for instance, like _Mononykus)_ would absolutely have timed their breeding periods to coincide with nuptial flights, and those flights, due to their cyclical nature (then as now), would have formed the major source of food for bringing up hatchlings.

How is it genetically benefitiel for a male ant to have only one chance at mating
@AntsCanada
@AntsCanada 2 жыл бұрын
I've asked this many times but perhaps survival is easier if a male isn't around to take up space? The colony only needs to protect one VIP member instead of two? But oddly, termites can replace a queen or king if they die, so... no idea!
@Jartran72
@Jartran72 2 жыл бұрын
That is very easy to answer. It is about efficiency. Ant mating seasons are usually 1 month over the whole year per species. So why would any colony pay food and energy to tend to them for a whole year? They don't contribute to their birthing colony in any way and they are nutricinally expensive. That is why they get born about a month before mating season as to give them time to mature and over the mating month they fly out and die. The colony can distribute food to queen and workers then again. It is no councidence that a lot of species have their nuptial flight seasons during the time where they can expect the most food available to the colony (like termite nuptial flights in the Philippines).

Termite alates: trying to get engaged during their nuptial flights Mikey, having Polyrhaxia as an open top setup: *It's showtime* This is a perfect summary of the events of Sozin's Comet: The termites represent the Fire Nation attempting to burn the Earth Kingdom to the ground. While the ants are Team Avatar and the Order of the White Lotus resisting them all.

All those termite monarchs surrendering to the superior ant kingdom is basically how the British got the Indian princely states into submission in a nutshell. While the ones who got engaged in Polyrhaxia didn't make it, at least they died together so neither has to go alone. You said it. It may be cruel to watch as it unfolds, but this is simply another part of nature. These are ants native to your area. Thus they are continuing the balance of the local ecosystem by keeping the termites in check

Ants have much more impressive biological weapons in my opinion. I feel like termites have some cool features but they don’t really match the raw power of ants. The most impressive thing about both ants and termites are their social structures. I do find termites social structures a bit more complex and a bit more interesting. Then again, ant queens can regulate the amount of nutrients their eggs get therefore allowing them to lay eggs with specialized jobs. Termites also look funny when they mover in large hoards. This is mostly opinion based and is limited to my knowledge of the two though. My mind is subject to change about their strengths and weaknesses.

I would've shut the light off and covered the ants so the termites didn't get it. I don't want to watch a blood bath. Not feeling this episode.
