Hey :D I have a cool design of an ant terrarium i found on youtube, i'm using it for my red fire ants :D. So it is a transparent plastic cup where i've put some earth for the ants to dig-in and some ligth collored sand on the top for better visualisation :D. It is ideal to observer the ants scavenging for food and their little tunnels on the walls of the cup. It's just a founding colony, i'll move them to a much bigger natural setup ;D.

My current ant colony is housed within a test tube. Since solenopsis ants are rather small (2-3 millimeters) they settle nicely in the humid test tube, which has been covered by the same napkin for around 3 months, ever since the nanitics hatched in August. So far, they are doing very well, with a very large pile of brood and a pretty elusive queen, who I rarely see. They are set to welcome their 4th or 5th generation any day now!
@enclaveherewhyisntyourvide30896 жыл бұрын
Update: I’ve since added another outworld and placed dirt near their original nest. They have dug quite a bit and constructed a brand new nest, which I believe that they have moved the colony into. It has been fascinating.

Thank you for the tutorial, mate! I spent several extremly hardworking hours making my own formicarium by your guide - it was fun, simple and made me experience simple joy of making something usefull by my own hands. I even put effort to make paint on my own, used clay and flour - but it was a fail in the end. Paint got cracks all over and eventually because of watering it was covered by mold. As a workaround I dried formicarium, removed all handmade paint and used acrylic paint instead. It works fine for me.

Love your video quality! I am currently housing my ant colony (Iridomyrmex sp.) in your Ytong Nest Size 01 with a AntsCanada outworld. I have just recently bought this queen and they already have an explosive population of about 50 workers! Something that I realized about the queen is that she really likes her nest extremely humid and warm. Something to say about this colony is that they love their ytong nest because they see to like ridges in the ytong for gripping. Best of luck to everyone entering the contest!

I caught all my ant queens last March and June so I'm still keeping them in test tubes. They actually all started out in syringes since I couldn't find any test tubes. They work just as well if you melt the tip closed with a lighter but after acquiring some test tubes form a pharmacy I have to say it's a lot more aesthetically pleasing. I have four colonies in test tubes but actually until recently I owned five colonies. The fifth one I moved to a jar within a jar setup with sand in between when it reached around ten workers but just a few days ago I accidentally drowned them when I was hydrating them. The water made the sand slip and a cave in happened. It was a Formica cunicularia colony. It hits hard when a stupid mistake ruins months of work but that's life I guess. Anyway my dream setup would be a giant acrylic nest with a large polygynous colony inside of it kind of like your argentine ants's setup. P.S Merry Christmas! Orthodox Christmas that is.

They are able to dig on the sides of the terrarium but not in the middle. So I can always see them & and their self-made tunnels! My 2nd colony "Lasius Niger" (Very common in Switzerland) lives in a tubs & tubes setup, but I'm planning to build a AAC-Nest. Or with a little bit of luck I may win one ;-) Sorry for my bad English and greetings from Switzerland!

Hey Jordan! I'm a new ant keeper and have three queens in test tube set ups currently. A banded sugar ant queen, black pavement ant queen and another (brownish) queen that I'm unsure of her species, but she has really tiny eggs, smaller than the pavement ant's eggs. In the future I want to house the camponotus (sugar ant) colony in a clear fornication connected to an outworld to watch them grow, and house the other two in natural nests. They all have eggs and I'm so excited to watch their colonies grow! :) :) :) Keep up the awesome work with this channel, it's been really helpful for me as a new ant hobbyist!

Hi Jordan, This is my first attempt at ant enthusiasm. I live in north western Victoria. I have been watching Ants Canada for a while and been keen to find a queen. I'm glad to know there is somewhere I can grab stuff locally. A few nights ago I found a very large ant. It was so big I suspected it could be a queen, 2.5cm. I caught it and found it was red in the centre and black in head and bum, gold at the connection to middle and underneath. I thought it could maybe be a wasp! But is was an ant for sure. After watching your channel I have found it to be a bull ant (still new, not sure what species. And you say bull ants are primitive and related to wasps.) I placed Antoinette in an enclosure with dirt, plant shelter, water (from a connecting chamber "sealed" with cottenballs) fruit, a xmas beetle, a drop of honey and a nice supply of oxygen. The next night I found two bull ants, half the size at least, workers I thought. Perhaps even from the same nest. I caught them and placed them in. They communicated peacefully. I was still uncertian if she was a pregnant queen but with your insight I noticed distinctive "wing wound." I learned that bull ants don't lay pheromones but touch. They were definitely the same species. If they dont lay down pheromones why were there worker ants in the same spot the next night? Maybe just hunting? My first guess was they were looking for their queen! But that's just my guilt for stealing her I think. I found a third worker tonight and placed him. I was wondering if it was bad to place workers in with a queen? I was thinking like an rts. You have your hq and first thing you build is workers, quicker you have them the quicker you get resources. She seems to have calmed down a lot since I've added the third worker. I believe she has settled enough to begin a burrow. I made a cloister chamber for her but I think that may to for next expansion (if there is one.) I know you also said that bull ants shouldn't be attempted by begginers, especially my very first time, but with a bit of research and your channel available I think she is doing very well.

Hi, Jordan. I have three different ant colonies and I am raising them in three different set ups. My first colony is living in the tubs and tubes set up, they have begun moving sand into their nest (the test tube) to build a wall around the queen. My second colony is living in a naturalistic set up with succulents growing in their nest, I have found a beetle and a spring tale in their nest, I also discovered my colony is a fan of seafood. My final colony is living in a classic uncle Milton nest connected to their test tube, this colony eats everything I give them but sadly have not started making tunnels and are still living in the test tube. Thankfully all the queens seem to be happy with their colonies and I am excited to see what they will do next. :)

I actually only got into ants recently- I currently have what I believe to be a pavement ant queen in a setup I learnt from you! A simple test tube, cotton bud, and water. I've had her for a few weeks now and a couple of days ago I couldn't help myself and had a peek at what she's been up to- and I think I saw some eggs!! So I think she's doing pretty great. This video has been great too, and I think I know exactly what I'm going to put her in next. I can't wait to fashion some cool little tunnels for her and her future kids!
@Jaybiiird7 жыл бұрын
daekros one tip, keep it super small, otherwise when she only has a few workers they will dump their trash I side the nest and it gets a high probability of mold 😁 good luck

Zbionix / Caleb H. Thanks for the tip! She's still in that test tube and good news- those were eggs after all, and she's got about ten workers now! I made the formicarium using this video but yeah, it's wayy too big. Shes so tiny too; shes going to go into an old iphone plastic case before she even gets a whiff of an actual AAC formicarium. The real problem is finding acrylic sheets for the display- I found photo frames work well but I'll need to do some proper foraging if I want to be able to make something for The Tiniest Queen Ever.

I’m housing my two main colonies, (A 20 worker C.Consobrinus colony, and a 2 worker M.Nigrocincta colony) in a test tube, connected up to an external outworld, which I have built by myself. These ants work well in these setups, as I can cover their tube, while still feeding them, and watching them forage. I’m glad they like this setup, as i used to have the Camponotus is a Size 3 AA nest, but it was too big for them, and they were stressed and unhealthy. When they get bigger, I do plan on moving them back into it, but in due time!

Great video! #AntsAustralia I have my colonies in different housings so I can see which works best for me. I have one each of your fantastic acrylic and ytong medium sized nests, one tubs and tubes setup and one layered transparent acrylic/outworld all-in-one nest that came from a store in Greece. So far, I like the the Ants Australia acrylic layered nest the most because it's so well constructed and the water levels are easy to gauge visually. Great work Jordan, thanks so much for making this great hobby easier for so many people.

Hello Jordan and fellow Ants Australia community, first and foremost, I would like to say that I enjoy all your videos as I keep myself busy with them at work. I would sneak in a video or two because they are just so informational. I love ants and would want to keep them. I recently received a store bought gel ant farm as a gift in which I am housing some harvester ants and I totally love it. I know that the gel is not an ideal habitat for any ants. I am aspiring to be an ant keeper myself so all your videos have helped me to understand further what to do when I have a farm of my own. My dream ant enclosure setup would be very similar to your big headed ants enclosure. I want to big glass aquarium in which I can induce a very similar wild habitat the ants would be used to. I am moving to Hawaii soon and would love to keep pheidole megacephala in my aquarium/terrarium setup.

Hi Jordan, I house my ants in a tub of dirt setup. The species I house is Camponotus auriventris. The tub contains dirt, which I want them to dig into, and let them create the size of the nest they want. And indeed, they did it! I first put the test tube setup they were originally in into the tub and onto the dirt, and a couple days later they've dug underground and created the chambers of the desired size, now they are nesting very comfortably there.

Heya!! I’m still new to ant keeping but currently I’m keeping my Lasius Niger colony in a size 2 acrylic nest hooked up to a medium sized outworld. But my ideal set up has to be vivariums! The idea that excites me the most is setting up an ecosystem with the ants at its centre.

Great Video Jordan! I myself house ants in various types of nests. From plaster to Ytong to test and tubes setups. My myrmica rubra colony for instance like their nest dry and therefore I use plaster instead of ytong since plaster absorbs water even faster!

My Carpenter Ants are currently living inside a 1 layer homemade Y-Tong nest. They are currently doing awesome, with brood spread out all over the nest. I make sure their humidity is ok for them to live and they really enjoy it in there as their nesting space! Although it may be a little bit too much room bc I see garbage building up in their nest and they aren't taking it to their outworld. Gonna have to move em out soon!

Awesome video! I currently have a small colony in a tubs and tubes setup, the rest of my ants are still in test tube set ups. The tub is an FF brand instant noodle container, it's hard plastic, comes with a non-snap on lid and it is round. I cut a hole in the top and hot glued some ventilation mesh. My dream set up would be an entire transparent wall in my basement with a large wild ant nest on the other side to view.

Thank you for yet another awesome video, Jordan! I had dabbled in some ytong carving but never managed to complete an enclosure, your tips have shown me exactly where I failed and how to fix my errors! I look forward to my beloved consorbrinus queen piling brood like yours! Also all 4 of my setups are all tubs with tubes but their development is slow and they do not seem entirely comfortable. I will be upgrading them to your DIY AAC nests ASAP, for visual benefits as well as being able to manage the hydration better.

Hay Jordan I recently found a Polyrhacis Ammon queen and did some research at first I thought it was fully claustral but then I found out it was semi-claustral. So I quickly put together a tubs and tubes setup and put her in it, now she has settle in nicely and laid her first batch of eggs. So i'm very happy with her progress and the size 1 Ytong nest would be perfect for her. thanks

I use acrylic nests because it cat really grow mold since it is an inorganic material and it takes apart very easily. I have a nine queen pheidole colony with around twenty workers housed in one, a Rhytidoponera mettalica colony housed in one and a brachyponera colony housed in one. They are doing fine and their numbers have been growing rapidly in the past few weeks.

I have a AAC Nest/Outworld combination. My first ants are died because i made the mistake, to take them 3 days after their arrive in the Nest/Outworld combination. But now ive learned very much from youre YoutTube channel and i want to try it again! I want to have everywhere some small nests connected with Tubes! Greetings from Germany! R.I.P. My Ants.....

Hi there, I am housing my irydomyrmex bicknelli collony of about 20 workers in a tub and tubes set up. I have found that they have really enjoyed the distances they can forage and how they really prove that can carry big loads of sand and gravel. But yeah I think they are starting to outgrow the test tube so hopefully when I add my ants Australia size 1 nest they will be really happy, thanks for the video Jordan, also with the formacarium I unscrewed they screws but it made the screw holes bigger so now with the thanks to this video I can solve this with blu tac, goodluck everybody for the contest

Epic video Jordan! Great to have an Aussie ant keeper to get some advice an Aussie species :). I am new to ant keeping, so most of my queens are in test tube set ups, but I have a suspected Myrmecia pilosura queen that I have in a tube and tubes set up. She doesn’t come out of her tube often, but she walks around calmly in her out world so she seems settled in fine. I will move one of my colonies into a spate terrarium I have when they get workers so I can see how that goes. Will make the nests you did in this video for the rest. :)

Just got into the hobby, smack dab in the middle of winter here in the US :) In a week's time I'll have bought a tiny Camponotus chromaiodes colony, and they'll hibernate in a test tube setup sitting inside a formicarium. My ideal setup would be an all in one setup, so I'm looking forward to your next video!
