If you would put some building material in there (like sand or rather) you could learn how the ants like to live. You have provided tunnels, though you don't think entirely like an ant, so the ants used cotton to change the layout of the tunnels. Why? idk. But we could learn if you gave them some building blocks to work with.

There is the possibility that the queens that where killed maybe laid eggs that where too different compared to the rest of the colony. I mean since the big thing Argentine Ants has for them is that they are similar enough not to start fighting other colonies.
