Those little aquatic worms look like detritus worms. If so, they are not parasitic, just scavengers. I am a zoology major and studied parasitology, but of course I could be wrong so when you move the caiman it wouldnt hurt to take in a fecal sample to an exotic vet for a fecal float to ensure there aren't any nasty parasites that could inhibit his health. To add, when you move Godzilla, adding fish can be good to control the worm population.

I believe it's the first time in many months watching this series that I broke into tears.. I felt very sorry for poor weaver ants, it's not something that I would get particularly emotional over, but seeing these last few ants cuddle together and barely moving under a leaf - broke me. Insects are often compared to organic machines, with very little individual mind of their own. But these poor last handful of workers, when left without purpose, when there's nowhere to go, no one to care for or protect, no more order or trail to follow - their last instinct is to hug and hold each other close

I think you just put the weaver ants into an area without the kinds of leaves they needed. They didn't want the small sappy banyan trees so they settled for vines, but... that wasn't their ideal for their protection or setup since they had to split their queen groups apart and couldn't really make a base.
@martinhuhn7813
@martinhuhn7813 Ай бұрын
Exactly. He kept weaver ants before and for those he carefully chose a suitable host tree. But there was no habitat in Orchadia and in Pantdora there were only spots with few soft leaves which they could combine, but no proper tree for a growing colony.

@jikemusic8081
@jikemusic8081 Ай бұрын
@@bluuangel004 Go to his old videos, we literally see several leaf nest littered through the vines. It seems like the lack of nests now, would suggest a mass consumption event, not necessarily a lack of adaptation. Not to mention it's been like 3 months since they've been added. If they were unable to adapt, it would have shown much sooner as most species, especially specialized species, will die off within a single month let alone several

Thats so awesome! Then you should now honestly look into jumping spider content, sometimes the voices they get are so fitting haha and i usually just am fascinated by spiders and dont think theyre cute at all, but those little shits... 🤩 the way they can recognize you and which interesting characters they might have. If u bond with em which works really well for some reason with them, some actually really really enjoy your presence and engage with you in cutely ways and manners. Even my mother that absolutely despises spiders thinks theyre cute and she wouldn't mind if i introduce her to the world of jumping spiders 😊 im thinking about getting a beautiful white one with purple, i call em the cheeks ion know how theyre called in english. They are also not expensive and their prey are fruit flies and like mosquitoes which is awesom cause you can just catch em and introduce em to your little apex predator with for some reason calm and cute looking eyes focusing on his tasty prey his enormous hooman fren brought in his little domain in your room. 😅 Edit: im sorry for my excitement but i never really liked spiders that much but jumping spiders got something special and i felt like this is my time to introduce someone else maybe😅

The weavers were spotted suffering from fungus infections. They might not be suited to the humidity in the vivarium. Even their first concern was establishing multiple nests for ventilation, and adjusting their nests for ventilation. THey probably needed more airflow and a delicate, dryer condition despite how close they are to such a humid environment. I can imagine the airflow they may like in a natural environment hat isn't present here.

As someone who has kept both weavers and dolichoderus before, here are my theories for their disappearances - It is unlikely for the bullet ants to have been the sole cause behind the demise of the weavers. Asian bullet ants are a fairly large species of ant and are mainly terrestrial, making climbing vines while fighting against the mainly arboreal and fairly ranged weaver ants not a good idea for them. The numbers of the weaver ants would have also made it difficult for the then relatively small colony of asian bullet ants to mount an effective attack into the leaves and branches of the weaver ant domain. Thus my theory is that some unknow factor, maybe increased competition, disease or something else severely weakened the workers and queens of the weaver colony, thus allowing the bullet ant colony to grow in size. at the same time, due to the decrease in numbers, less food would be gathered by less existing workers to feed the queens and brood and this would continue in a downward spiral. less food->less brood->less workers-> less food etc. meanwhile, this means more food for competitors, ie the bullet ants. at a certain point, the weaver ants would become unable to hold their own against a bullet ant attack which is precisely what happened eventually, leading to their demise and "extinction". In conclusion the weaver ants likely fell victim to an unknow factor that weakened their colony and they were unable to recover, allowing their competitors to raid their nests and kill them. -for the dolichoderus, in my experience they are extremely fragile as a species when relocated to a new location and are also not avid hunters unlike larger species such as trapjaws. Thus they likely failed to acquire the proper resources needed to sustain their colony and died.

@AgHQ-xc4be exactly. For awhile we were losing some insects with no explanation as to what happened. Like rocksteady for example. Now with him adding more and more to the two vivariums with plans to do more, it just seems like he is gonna need more help in the mystery department Small unobtrusive, weather-proof cameras may do the trick.

I’ve been following this series since day 1 and I’m truly amazed at how much was accomplished this past year. I learned new things every time a new episode is uploaded. I’m looking forward to leaning more things about ants and wildlife and I can’t wait to see what 2025 has in stored for us. Can’t wait to see what you’ll be building for next vivarium! 😁

As was mentioned, it's probably the weavers and dolychoterous ants didn't have suitable areas to nest, the weavers not being able to create large enough nests to properly support the colony, and the dolychoterous ants not being able to find appropriate nooks that they couldn't keep the colony in a safe space. Without these things to support their lifestyle properly they were vulnerable to other ants and predators.

This multi-vivarium ecosystem is gonna have more than 10 seasons, it's so amazing that this has 3 full seasons of discovery and challenges. I've been watching this channel since around 5 or more years ago and I love the content you make as we discover more about nature in every video! I know an end of a season means a break, usually, so have a great Christmas and New Year break! Really excited for that swamp cave vivarium thing, I forgot since it's been so many episodes, but whatever it is, I'm hyped!

@danielkosta3134
@danielkosta3134 Ай бұрын
Yes getting the waterfall in action again would be great. That would be a perfect opportunity to add more epiphytes is they are an integral part of the tropical rainforest . There are many small orchids that would thrive there such as species of Dendrobium and Pleurothallis. Also there are species of small creeping ferns which are epiphytic and would do very well on the waterfall.

At first it was a huge area but as the inhabitants increased it felt like it was getting smaller. I was surprised how so many different kinds of ants got along so well in a small place until two species were eliminated, nature found its diversity ceiling. Looking forward to the expansion, feels like it needs to at least double in capacity.

Planarians, the worms are detritivore planarian worms, basically they are the aquatic version of your mites, springtails, etc. They drive the very cleanliness you were describing in that ecosystem, breaking down the larger waste items down, feeds the nitrogen cycle and ultimately becomes growth for the plants that are rooting into water.
