I had the same thought, there was an experiment about wasps I read about, least I think it was wasps. Dots on the face indicated rank in the hierarchy, the scientists gave a wasp dots indicative of higher status, and the wasp got attacked. When giving a wasp dots that indicated it was of lesser social status, it got attacked. Regarding ants, I read about someone giving an ant smells from an enemy ant colony, and I think it got attacked. (think, meaning I read about it once long ago and memories fade over time.)

@@TheClimbingBronyOldColt Yeah that can confuse their smell there's an ant that all the brood can lay fertilized eggs but what they did its they born look for an ant colony and fight the queen once the queen died the invasive ant shower on the dead queen guts to smell like her and the colony start treating her like their queen thinking the queen won and throw the body out of the colony

While I do find it interesting how human emotions are projected onto the ants, I'm fairly positive that these creatures don't have very complex emotions, such as depression and the like (at least not in the ways we as human beings would describe them). Nonetheless, I do appreciate the empathy shown towards these creatures, as I agree that they, among the countless other creatures in this world, deserve our respect.
@derekhstites2 жыл бұрын
What makes you think depression is so complex?

Isn't depression essentially chemical imbalance? It is possible in most organisms imo, in one way or another.

@TarporLegend2 жыл бұрын
Even lobsters get depressed. It's quite possible
@williamsplays85282 жыл бұрын
@@byzantiphile7630 well. We can't prove they have the more complexer emotions. However, each of these emotions is simply just chemicals. This means we can't disprove emotions in these insects. Trees grow better to certain music, and are often quoted to react to pain. It's just chemicals. We have such a narcissistic view of everything. In actuality likely everything has emotion because it's just chemical balances. What is distinct for us is the capacity to have deeper thought due to a more complex frontal lobe. If you really think about it, emotions are some of the simplest things in life. Even plants probably have them. What sets animals and insects apart from plants is a brain to feel the emotion, and what sets humans apart is a complex frontal lobe to really stop and think about the emotions. Ie, ants feel pain but not the capacity to reflect upon said pain.

Peleus is the PERFECT name for this ant. Peleus was a king of Myrmidons, which means ant-men in Greek. Best known for being the father of Achilles, we see in the play Andromache that is all alone after outliving his son, grandson (Neoptolemus), and all the other Myrmidons. These Myrmidons include a companion of his named Phoenix, which is also the name of your ant colony. So we're naming this ant Peleus, alright?

I think the ant will spend the entire time trying to get home...even at the expense of its own life. What a big relief that the ant didn't die! It was super cool that she knew to take care of herself before trying to find home again. I didn't know ants check up on each other like that, it was so sweet!

So here's the math: Average fire ant lifespan: 5 weeks or 840 hours Average human lifespan: 79 years or 692040 hours Time fire ant spent in isolation: 12 hours Solving for time in human years(x) using ratio -> 12/840=x/692040 x = 9886 hours or 1 year, 1 month, 16 days and 22 hours *The ant spent 1 year, 1 month, 16 days and 22 hours of her lifetime in isolation.* Edit: So this now has >1k likes and I feel like I have to explain whatever the heck I did here. In neuroscience, there's a thing called time perception. It's quite a complicated matter but basically it is theorized that living things perceive time differently. According to biologist S.J Alger, there is empirical evidence that metabolic rate has an impact on animals' ability to perceive time. Generally, animals with faster metabolic rates (smaller animals) perceive time as slower as compared to animals with slower metabolic rates (bigger animals). With that in mind, given that it is scientifically impossible to determine exactly what is the proportion of time perception between human and ants (such proportion has not been quantified yet), I had decided to disregard time perception. This makes the proportioning very inaccurate but very possible. If we consider that time perception is relative to their lifespans, this should mean that the lifespans of humans and ants should be proportional (840 ant hours ∝ 692040 human hours). What's left is to determine how much time 12 ant hours is in human hours. The math is done above. It's basically [(ant hours) x (human lifespan)] / (ant lifespan) = (human hours). The answer is 9886 hours and I converted it to the format years, months, days, and hours. Now if you excuse me, I have 5 minutes to spend to do whatever the hell I want. Edit 2: Thank you all for complimenting my intelligence. (Like there exists such a thing) I have read approximately a batrillion comments saying "u r smOrt" and even though I am flattered, I would also like them to stop as they are getting redundant. Thank you and lots of love.

I feel a little weird typing this, but when i was little, there was an ant scurrying across the sink. I just stared at it, talking to an ant. While i was an imaginative kid, i wondered if ants could drown. So i took one and splashed around some water while it was inside... I felt bad after about five seconds and removed it. It definitely wasn't moving so i blew at it, and used my nail to give it CPR, but it didn't work. After that, I was sad that I killed it... but after about ten minutes of watching, it suddenly woke up! I was glad It only passed out. Then, It's friend approached and it looked like they were reunited.

Well if you have an actual passion for biology academia will do its best to destroy that. It's one of the most politicized fields in science, to the point of promoting falsehoods and blacklisting anyone that doesn't follow along with the program. The progressively lower standards combined with the aforementioned has greatly eroded what once could be called "higher education".
