im actually keeping meranoplus bicolor and I’m going to give you some tips. DO NOT feed until her 3rd worker has arrived because, mould will build up in their test tube and will make the brood vulnerable. once the 3rd worker’s exoskeleton has hardened, start off with a drop of honey or beetle juice on an aluminium foil so it’s easier to remove. If they started to reject it, means they need protein. Start off with tiny mealworms. Once they start growing more workers, give 2-3 baby mealworms make sure it’s gut spilled and chopped up. Once they have 10-15 workers, you can start giving them cricket legs and medium sized mealworm. This is just before their formicarium, hope this helps!

I loved how the queen held her first egg, like 'Wow, I made this. I can't believe it.' As for her name maybe Queen Felicity, as in Latin it means 'Good fortune, happy' And I can see her being a good queen. Or maybe Queen Esme, as in French it means 'Beloved'. But anyway, I hope that she's fertilized and healthy, as she seems like she'd make a perfect new ant queen on this channel, so I hope she turns out good and can start her own colony someday!

The etiquette for naming things is usually the one who finds it also names it. That person is usually also the one that confirms the ID as it's mostly scientists who do this. Seeing as how in your case this role is filled by two people I think it's only fair that you both should agree on a name.

Hey AntsCanada! I just wanted to say something before I forget. Since you're keeping invasive species of ants, I think it's important to consider keeping them in closed set ups. I think that preventing virgin queens and males from flying out of the set up and breeding with other colonies would be vital to making sure new colonies of these invasive species cannot form. At the same time, I also think that native species should be kept in "open" (I.E. no lid/roof) set ups to allow their mating flights to go smoothly and spring up more native colonies in your local area. I know it seems like a no brainer and that you've probably considered this, but I just wanted to leave a comment with the notion just in case it slipped your mind. As for a name, I really like the idea of naming the Meranoplus Bicolor queen Queen Valentine. Maybe the colony can be named the Heart Breakers for fun!

He's made comments regarding keeping non native ants and he does not promote it, at least in terms of sourcing a non native ant species for a colony that is located outside of the range of that species. Obviously, not all of what he keeps are native, but I think he finds exception with those because he collected them in the same range where he is housing them. They may be an invasive species, but they are an invasive species that has already become established within that area. He's not bringing in new species or individuals collected from a different ecosystem to bring into a a new ecosystem. Hopefully that makes some sense. I'm not a scientist but do I have the vocabulary of one.

That's awesome man. You're on the science radar. Keep up the great work. Your hobby is immensely interesting. I've had a hobby regarding fungi and learned more than I imagined about that field. I didn't pursue it for long though. I hope one day I can go back to that. But the way you carefully craft your terrariums and the knowledge you exhibit when literally fabricating ecosystems inside glass boxes is amazing. Of course you would have a part in the naming of a species you helped discover. I'm sure there are guidelines, so they can't be called Yellowus Poopicus, but of course you will have a part in the naming.

You could even have mist come out the top to mimic smoke like what you did for the Leviathan setup and how it came out of the mouth, as long as it wouldn’t disturb the ants that is. Fire ants are tropical ants found it the wet rainforests of South America so I wouldn’t think they’d be bothered by it. I’m so excited!

This is so exciting! You should invite Dr General to visit your home. I'm sure he'd be thoroughly fixated on your pet ants as well as the garden ones. Good luck with the new species. From my understanding, the person who finds a new species gets to name it. A scientist will normally give the first name - its genus, then they get the (sub)species name either from the finder or they name it after the finder. I think the first ant should be the Queen of Hearts. What else could she be? ;)

Heh not quite. I'll explain what "naming" really entails in taxonomy: The specific name (the second part of the scientific name) is usually the only name that matters when it comes to new species. And the scientist(s) (i.e. "authors") have full control over it. There are rules to follow in the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN), e.g. the name must not be identical to another older name, the name must be published properly (with proper diagnosis and the holotypes deposited in a collection), it must be published in a peer-reviewed journal or book, etc. The usual red tape. Other than that, what they write on the paper is what its name will be. They have full control. However, it is standard practice and polite to let the collector (the person that alerted them to the new species) be the one to name the species. It's not a big deal to the authors since their actual names will forever be attached to that species anyway, regardless of what the specific name will be. For example, the full scientific name of the first ant featured in this video is: _Meranoplus bicolor_ (Guérin-Méneville, 1844) Guérin-Méneville refers to Félix Édouard Guérin-Méneville, a French entomologist who first described this species in an 1844 paper and gave it the name "bicolor" (lit. "two colors"). His name is in parentheses because he originally described the species as _Cryptocerus bicolor,_ but other scientists have since moved the species to its current genus. Some authors will ignore a naming request and name it themselves. But no one likes them. A notable example is Sir Richard Owen who was notorious for stealing and naming the discoveries of others. *With regards to the genus and subspecies name:* The generic name is usually not something you pick. Most genera are already discovered, so authors just need to find the correct one to classify the new species under, based on diagnostic criteria. And this classification can change (especially with the advent of phylogenetics), like the previous example: _Cryptocerus bicolor_ eventually being reclassified as _Meranoplus bicolor._ If a new discovery comes from a new undiscovered genus (or even rarer still, new family, or any of the higher ranks). It would be a major discovery. Subspecies names are largely irrelevant when it comes to taxonomy. They will only be chosen IF there are subspecies. If none exist, it doesn't exist. And even when a new subspecies is discovered, by default, the original population discovered will repeat the given specific name since it is the nominate subspecies. For example. Us modern humans are _Homo sapiens sapiens_ (notice that the specific name is repeated) when talking about us in the context of other proposed subspecies like _Homo sapiens neanderthalensis._

I've been watching this channel for a while now, and my son and wife are now roped in. I kinda wish there were more videos, as I really like these moments we share watching these. Please feel free to give us more science, introduce us to scientists that help you, what they say and think, etc. It really is a great tool for my kid's scientific education to see such good programs, and sure as hell doesn't hurt mine either ^^

I think these are the rules in naming species: 1. Name must be unique, 2. Must not be a rude name, and 3. The namer can't name it after themselves. So yeah, Dr. General can definitely name it after you/your channel if he's the taxonomist who will name it.

Omg that's a beautiful queen ant😍 The way those first ants look makes me think of the balrogs from the Lord of the Rings. Maybe you could name the queen Durin's Bane or something else super cool and if she's succesful in hatching those eggs and the colony survives, I'd suggest they could be named something with balrogs. Another suggestion could be something with dragons. The texture of their bodies make me think of scales. And combined with that beautiful dark red and black coloring and the spines, it makes me think of dragons too. So, the queen could always be the mother of the dragons. Something like that. When it comes to the other new colony you got, maybe you could call them something along the lines of air nomads or something avatar-y that has to do with the air nomads. They make me think of the air nomads at least for some odd reason. No idea why. And I have a suggestion for a cool terrarium concept if you are succesful at raising both of these colonies: You could do something of a flat design, where the colonies live above and below each other. Maybe you could put the dragony ants at the bottom and the air nomad ants at the top (I'm naming them like this for the lack of a better name right now). Obviously seperated from each other, but they'd be neighbours. I've never seen a setup like that before, and I think it'd be super cool if you can achieve something like that. You could obviously design the terrariums in a way where they both create one beautiful scene to look at. And then when you take a closer look, you realize they're two seperate ones. Also, I have noticed too that the nuptial flight season has started here. I've seen some winged ants (didn't see if it was males or queens). Sadly I don't have the space or money to keep ants, but it's always amazing to see them come out.

Go to previous episodes and see why there are a lot of ants in his backyard. He's trying to make it a place where native species of ants thrive. Also it isn't as simple just walking out side and capturing a colony let alone trying to capture the queen among the chaos. Also it'd be more harmful to immediate environment to dig up just one colony. People need more awareness and understanding for nature and life. In this world of just do and get what you want. That is not how it should be.

While I do love the newer, more experimental setups, I also kind of miss the old fire ant enclosure that was just forest/jungley area with a river, it was fun to see them form their rafts and also have the fish swimming in the water for a complete cleaning cycle. I understand some of that requires more maintenance and upkeep and might not be in the cards at the moment, but I'd love to see a return of the water beasts and self sustaining enclosures one day.

It’s so cool to see new discoveries! Usually the scientist names them in the scientific paper about them, but I’m sure he’ll take recommendations. One of my professors has discovered 9 (and counting) species of beetle. He named one after his kids, one after his wife… and then started taking recommendations from others on his team, because you run out of names. You’re part of the team now! You’re doing research to figure out how to keep them alive! I’m sure he’ll either ask, or call them something like Canada or Canadis, after the channel.
