I took seven pet ant colonies and placed them into a single arena to discover if the ant colonies would band together to form a polygynous colony. The initial interaction was a bit concerning, however after my subscribers voted to keep the colonies together and follow through with the experiment, the aftermath was truly devastating! Please remember to vote at the end of the video to help me and the ant colonies out. Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution.

I think your experimental design was also flawed. You should of attached all the tubes simultaneously. The first tube had an advantage and released pheromones that the tubes detected, thus they did not leave their tubes as quickly. Tube 1 was allowed to essentially claim the territory. It might have been different if they all had the same initial exposure to the arena. Likely would still result in deaths, but it would be an interesting long term experiment to flesh out your hypothesis.

@The 143 Pacer You know much more than me. I just have a master's degree in Biology so I know experimental design is very important. If you formulate your hypothesis, it needs to be exact. You have to make sure everything is the same between the control and the treatment groups, all other variables have to be exactly the same. It is really tricky in biology, but not following this can lead to false conclusions. If you are testing if these groups will somewhat coexist, they have to exposed to the variables simultaneously. Starting with releasing one colony gives that colony an advantage. I like your ant experiments and I encourage them. If it may seem cruel, you need to follow a strict regimen to test your hypothesis. Furthermore, I encourage that you write about your scientific findings to an open source publisher like plus one, you can try higher for peer review, but not likely without being accredited. There are not a lot of ant labs, you have a good set up. I would also recommend going to conferences like the entomological society of America. They will appreciate your work I think.

I vote #7 because first we don't know if they are carpenter ants or fire ants because of that if we let them stay there for a bit we will get to see if they get their full color 🎨and also their soldiers are kinda red the carpenters soldiers or majors are fully black and we could learn something from it
@Spoondogg

I agree with the people saying the first colony had an advantage. Colony #1 walked in alone and already got to the food by the time #2 came, and the very first interaction #2 had outside of their tube was touching a foreign ant. Every other colony afterward could probably smell the other tubes of ants instantly
@Darkness5423
@Darkness5423 11 ай бұрын
That's what i noticed, #1 had way too much time to mark the sterile biome as their territory. The other colonies got added too late so they more than likely thought the area they found was owned by #1 for a long time. Seeing as how most of them didn't leave their nests at all on video.

I don’t know if it’s possible for ants to feel emotional but the way the 8th queen was standing over the bodies of her children was honestly kind of sad. It was like she was mourning them, her antennas were drooping over them like she was in disbelief that they were gone like that. I’m new to the insect world so I don’t know much about ants but it’s surprising that she seemed emotional in that moment, very human emotions.

My vote goes to Colony 1. Daring explorers, courageous defenders, wonderful workers and great warriors. Deserve a home upgrade. But I also agree with some of the comments that vote to keep the unmated queen as a pet to see how long she and her lazy sons can carry on with help from you. I also have a thought... If you release the queen ant to another colony's nuptial flight, will she have a chance again? Or will she be killed for being a stranger? Theories... Theories....

I agree with what you said completely. Now, to try and answer your question with my (very limited) knowledge on ants: I doubt that if let into another nuptial flight, she will mate again. Just a theory, but maybe queens that don't successfully mate, as in never engage in the act with the male of the species, keep their wings to re-join in the next nuptial flight. My guess is that this queen did mate, but it was unsuccessful in some manner and she didn't know because there is no way to know, hence her ripping her wings off and laying eggs. I don't know enough about ants to further my theory, but it seems sound, as many in the original batch never ripped off their wings.

From watching these last two videos I think 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 all might be the same species. They actually might be polygynous. With 8 being the only one raided and losing eggs and workers from 3 others, without any other violence among the rest. I think you should get them tested to see what species you actually have. You might be able to create that massive colony.

I know I am a bit late to the party, but I think you did pull the plug on the experiment prematurely. All the casualties being from one colony while multiple colonies were engaging in hostilities against it might have indicated that this colony 8 - just like colony 7 you mentioned previously - was from a different species. So while removing this victimised colony from the experiment while it could still recover was the right call, you should've kept the others together for a bit longer. Maybe this would give the Queen 5 a chance at surviving.
@emeralddetailing
@emeralddetailing Жыл бұрын
I feel it would've been smarter to block off the test tubes before continuing the experiment, so you can keep an eye on them when they're out. I thought this was why you had the arena bare in the first place. I was surprised on your decision to leave them overnight. Keeping an eye on them would've helped the educational part a whole lot as well, because now we don't know what happened. We can just assume what's happened from the aftermath. It looks like most of the colonies targeted that single colony. And you don't know if the others showed any aggression. This could've very well been clarified through observing, as stated before. I wish you could've continued the experiment and kept a closer eye on them, but I can't complain, as there's no way I'd pressure someone into risking animals' lives for my own knowledge. Not everything is as important as life and death.

Honestly, I think even if they were to merge and create a massive colony there would be some dead workers at the beginning. They need to know each other, test their "strenght" before merging. Also they were all new, small colonies, hungry and feeling the smell of colony #1 everywhere. Their best option was to raid a weak colony. Also someone suggested #8 might be a different species, that might be what lead to it being raided

@that1geekychick

The offspring are all male because that's how ant genetics work out. Males have one set of chromosomes, while females have two. This queen never found a mate to pass on its genetic material and provide the second set of chromosomes needed for female offspring, so she can only make haploid males. A change in environmental conditions unfortunately isn't going to fix that.

The problem with this idea is that they're small, especially now, so they wouldn't use the extra space even if given to them until later when they outgrow their current space. If anything, the more "ruthless" cousins are more ready to move out to a bigger space, but I can see why from a human perspective, rewarding them for murder may seem sour. In fact, if at least kept the ant colonies to go to war. It could have been possible for some colonies to join together on the war. And it's possible. Yea I agree the other colonies are more likely to start a war so if you protect the 8th colony of workers. Make them mass in numbers and thrive with work. Then at the same time make the other tubes smaller every day to push the other colonies closer and see what happens. Rather than let nature take it’s course and allow the more dominante races kill other colonies, I think you should step in and separate the colonies and make them aware that you are there, forcing them to live with each other. Then re introduce the 8th colony with the big mansion full of working ants to the other groups who have been forced to live together and watch them figure something out. This is the only way you can make them all work with each other and maybe overthrow the big colony.

As a fellow keeper of the family Hymenoptera, (bees) maybe it would have worked if they had been allowed to blend scents first? The same way that when you introduce a new queen to a hive, you put her in a queen cage and let the bees acclimate to her scent in their own time?
@antsi2931
@antsi2931 2 жыл бұрын
How long does that take with bees? I've successfully had a colony of Pseudomyrmex Gracilis ants, that lost their queen, adopt a new queen I caught. I probably got lucky because I just put her in with the colony and they treated her like family. But I tried it again with a different colony recently and it didn't work. I kept her in a test tube with a metal screen blocking the entrance and placed it in the colony's outworld for 2 weeks. But when I released her she roamed around for a few hours, it was during the night, and when I woke up she had been killed. Is there general time limit for them to acclimate to the scent?

so with colony 5... Mother-son mating (oedipal mating), as queens typically avoid inbreeding, mate only early in life and do not mate again after having begun to lay eggs. In the ant genus Cardiocondyla mating occurs among sib in the natal nests. Sex ratios are extremely female-biased and young queens face the risk of remaining without mating partners. Here, we show that virgin queens produce sons from their own unfertilized eggs and later mate with them to produce female offspring from fertilized eggs. Oedipal mating may allow queens to found new colonies when no mating partners are available and thus maintains their unusual life history combining monogyny, mating in the nest, and low male production.

I feel like the experiement could have worked, if it was done on a much smaller scale. 7 newly forming colonies in such a tiny space, during their most vulnerable time of development... it would have been a huge cross over of unfamiliar scents and might have created a hostile environment just from the conflicting signatures alone. The feeling of 'it's not safe' and '1 food source' to compete over. But, with that worker from colony 1 that they had taken to the queen in 3... They didn't kill her. Those two colonies (alone) might have been able to mix under supervision, since there wasn't outright hostility, and via that, they had the most exposure to each other. I think with most animals, it's better to start small and slow, not big and rushed.
@dashkataey1740

PS: re the unmated female, it would be interesting to see if there is a change in behaviour if you keep putting food into their home. Except for when you need to change their water supply, so (I assume) you will "encourage" them to go into an identical, clean tube, they're unlikely to ever need a larger home than the one you've given them (perhaps the larger Ants Canada test tube to give them room to stretch their wings? There - got a plug in for your store!). But hunger might compel the queen and the males to actively get the food you'd supply in their tube. Whether that would encourage them to share is unlikely (though maybe not impossible? Evolution has occurred in part by selection due to behavioural adaptation as well as natural selection on physical grounds, after all). If they could keep themselves alive this way, they might live until the next nuptial flight. It would be great to see if the queen could at least fulfill her destiny.

Oh bro seriously? You may just did one of THE most interesting experiment that I have ever seen till now. I am thinking that colony 8 is probably some hostile strain of ant species that other colonies do not want them to be present around. Only the ants from colony 8 got killed says something right? Anyway, I will redo this experiment myself and see what is the outcome. I am planning to do: 1, Put all 10 ant species together at the beginning so they are starting evenly, no one has an advantage; 2, Choose a known nonaggressive strain and let it start a day earlier before releasing other 9 colonies; 3, Choose a known aggressive strain and let it start a day earlier to gain advantage before releasing other 9 colonies. I do not “love” ants myself so I will continue this experiment till the end. And I will probably burn all the colonies after I got the results, because releasing a huge amount of ants is no good to neither the surrounding environment, nor to my house. Hope you understand since you are also an expert in animal behavior science. These ants are basically the rats in the lab and death is a tool to maintain the balance of the environment.

I'd love to see colony 1! they seem to be really curious during this experiment and were really the only ones to explore new lands and absolutely hit the jackpot for food indeed. although exploring that much almost got one of them killed, that's really one colony that can thrive.

The one I shall vote is for the Colony 1. They were pioneers and sent scouts to navigate through dangerous grounds and even though one of them was tortured in part 1. They were able to escape. They might have done some ant war crimes. They also were ready to fight any time their enemies decided to declare war on them. That is my reason to vote. STAY SAFE.

I wonder what caused 3 diff colonies to attack colony 8, if those 3 colonies first joined together and then raided the other one, or if they got raided once and word just spread that theres a weak colony. Based on how they left their homes one at a time earlier, I'm wondering how it is that the other colony was able to get over run to begin with, the home team would seem to be at such a natural advantage. This all happened while there was plenty of available food in the cage, makes it even stranger to wonder what exactly happened and why. I wish we had caught more of those interactions on camera, its really interesting to see how ant behave.

Ants got a mention in the Bible haha. They are quite amazing and very human like in terms of civilization. Some species even shepherd other bugs for sugar!! They build bridges and rafts out of their bodies. It's been discovered the way they interact and communicate on a macro level is similar to how our neurons and electrons in our brains operate and interact

Just my 2 cents on the moral dilemma, no “side” or agenda here just my thoughts and this channel proves my point. When people who eat meat, especially the horrible high output factory variety that have no consideration for the animals, get upset at people who hunt saying its morally reprehensible, here’s my experience… Taking an animal (for us normal people not divisive content creator types), is an emotional and powerful experience. I was personally surprised how profound it was. I instantly felt far more connected to the wild natural environment the animals live in to the point where you seem to feel you are being observed by something greater than yourself to see if you are respectful and deserve to be there. You recognize that you killed this animal for a purpose and have a moral obligation to not waste anything or take the animals for granted. The way this relates to the dialogue in these comment sections is this: When you are immersed in an environment where you control the lives and fates of any living creature no matter the species and you have a soul, you become linked in a very meaningful way to those lives in a way that passive observers can not. And as it relates to the man doing these ant experiments, he is guided by his morals, values, and conscience in the decisions he makes throughout his experiments. And in listening to his moral dilemma as the experiment continues and he decides to terminate it because he has decided that there have been too many things done wrong (as determined by him) and that it has crossed over from science to morbid curiosity on the part of himself and his viewers, he made the correct decision to terminate the experiment and regroup. To not have these internal dilemmas in researching animals and insects etc. is to risk losing your humanity. I absolutely applaud the care you show during your experiments and respect your character as someone who is sticking with your values even though it potentially causes you view count to drop thus losing you money. Ethics are more important to you that money. Hope in humanity has been restored for the day. Thanks for reading my comment.

Ok i might get backlash for this, but i have a theory. You know the red-ish carpenter ant colony? Well i was thinking, if that was a different species, so could the others. I recommend you send a worker to an ant biologist for a proper ID. On all the ant colonies. Whilst you wait, make theories about the results if you want. Im mainly focused on the fact that only a single colony was attacked, the others were fine (except when the worker was dragged, and it wasn't killed) Im not saying you should, i just say its my theory. I believe you should check species. You could place the other colonies in a similar area to see if they merge, It might cause a war tho idk 'w' I guess what I'm tryna say is Only one colony was harmed, that could mean it was a different species to the others, send worker ants to an ant biologist for them to ID it and determine if its polygenous or not

@loveblowsbad
@loveblowsbad 2 жыл бұрын
My first thought when I heard the idea was "Part of merging is fighting for hierarchy and i doubt they have the stomach for it." Even if they are all the same species with shared linage or whatever I think you could have some queens purged and still end up with a super hive. You won't know for sure until there is one queen left and I know antscanada does not have the stomach for that...

Wouldn't the 6 other colonies ganging up on one colony be a sign that that 1 colony is the outlier and the others could be working together? If they didn't, wouldn't the violence be random and not targeted?

For the male colony, since the queen is 'doomed' anyway, no sense in releasing her to the wild. Make her a new pet. create a customized terrarium where you can easily feed her with minimal waste and what not. See how long you can keep her alive, and release the males outside as needed, ideally when another nuptial flight comes about. Who knows, you may learn some things previously undocumented

The Queen won’t last even as a pet. She would have to scavenge the food for herself which wouldn’t be good cuz queens are supposed to save up their energy to just lay eggs. She would have to live in a small enclosure and have food placed next to her. Not worth keeping.

@that1geekychick
@that1geekychick 2 жыл бұрын
Seconding the sentiment that keeping her would be inhumane. Without workers to feed her, clean the nest, care for the larvae, and stand watch, she would essentially be doing dozens of jobs all at once, with no rest, her entire life. And she doesn't have the mental capacity to understand that she's not in the wild and that there's a human out there taking care of her, so she doesn't have to constantly panic about all these survival necessities seemingly not being met. It's sad, but she just wouldn't have a good quality of life.

If your going to put all the other colonies in the wild, colony 8 seems to be the weakest of all of them since all the other colonies seems to have attacked/weakened them. Could we keep colony 8 in captivity (rehome them when they are stronger) since the other colonies seems to be stronger for the wild life?
