it is not a must, but having an iPad is really helpful cuz carrying a laptop around the hospital is not feasible, where as having an iPad means you can access all the info in a second and all the textbooks can be used too while reading up on a patient or when doing an examination etc.. of course phone does the job but then again phone screen is small and reading huge books with tiny letters is not an easy thing. If you can invest in an iPad or a tab do it, its worth it.
