I can't wait to see what you come up with! Something to keep in mind - if you decide to have the taller buildings in a cluster in the center, that may obstruct visibility to the smaller buildings around them by the basement walls.

The thing about the new road plates is that they're far, far too narrow to comfortably fit any modern cars on them. The older 4-wide cars could be fine, but 6-wide is impractical, and 8-wide is impossible. What can work, if you've got the \space\, is to use one road plate (16x16) as one lane of the road, making it wide enough to fit even 8-wide cars comfortably. Or you can have one-way streets. Alternatively, take a sort of post-modern approach and remove the roads almost entirely. Because when it comes right down to it, the roads aren't much more than a spot to display car sets. You could take the roads out, or maybe leave one road going through, and then use the regained space to add a parking garage, and have the downtown area designed with foot traffic in mind! Side note, what's up with that "Alita" plate I saw at the start there? Where'd that come from? Not a reference I expected to see. :P

Really excited to see what you have planned for the new downtown area! One quick thought to keep in mind if I were in your shoes is not to feel locked in by the current size of the statue/plaza space. The plaza could become longer and skinner if it needed to, potentially even just a 16 stud baseplate depth. I love the story telling possibilities of the space, and having it run skinny alongside a street with some large trees could look really nice. Looking forward to the next upload!

When they stopped making the old road plates I frantically bought up a load of them. The new ones definitely have more versatility in some respects - you can create a scene where someone is actually digging the road up for example and you can easily create parking lots etc - but they're too narrow for my needs and the absence of curves is a big issue. I also just dont really like the shiny look of them. I can totally see the benefit of MILS for people who are constantly swapping buildings around and taking them to shows and again they allow the possibility of adding in more interesting landscape elements because of the ability to build down and not just up, but the cost and inconvenience of uprooting all your buildings to swap them over is a big commitment. Sometimes I've felt like lego KZbinrs have switched to mils and new road plates simply because they see all the other lego KZbinrs do it and they feel obligated to copy (and they can make a video about it). I remember when there was a flurry of "hey guys, I'm switching to the new road plates!" videos and I'd look at fhe end result and think 'why?' 😂

@@mrsilly6155 My sentiments exactly! Kept all my old road plates in my city and purchased a bunch of new road plates to setup what I call a mall strip area of the smaller Lego shops. You can see how they would work together with these smaller building sets, but forget about the Modular’s looking good with them. All I know is that Alex is one of the biggest KZbinr’s and he inspired me to stay with the old road plates. So, Alex if you’re reading this, please stay with the old road plates for the sake of continuity of your city….

Will be interesting to see what you come up with, sounds like quite the change. Was thinking you were only changing the area we know as downtown, but like you say everything is so tightly connected. Will be interesting to follow the process. I m sure you'll come up with something great, you always do.

I do not fully support MILs but I do understand and appreciate some of its benefits; hence, the options I mentioned before. I suggest implementing your plan on 1 small district first and if you like how it looks, expand on the next area so you dont get overwhelmed 😊

@@aceofspades5003 you can basically create your own modular reinforced baseplates with your own lego pieces and put the modular buildings on/around them. The roads and even the white lines, you can make them from MILs, because those old roadplates, lego is not making them so you have to buy them from external vendors.

The starting is always the hardest part. I think you have to have a good reason to do mills. Before the pandemic we used to do train shows with the LEGO and mills worked great for that. It also let just pick up a building from the layout and drop it in the show layout. I like the new road plates with mills, but not with regular baseplate.
@steves9964
@steves9964 3 күн бұрын
This was a really cool layout and I'd hate to see it go but I guess your city is like Disneyland in that it's never quite finished. I definitely think those skyscrapers should be on the fringes or at least in one district because otherwise they're going to completely dominate and block the rows of buildings and general street life you've created. Someone had commented about breaking up the monorail/shuttle into two lines, which could be very interesting. One can link the airport with the downtown core, while the other links the amusement park with perhaps a larger downtown train station. I kind of view that type of setup to what we have here in New York: you've got commuter rail (LIRR) linking the suburbs to the city proper, and one of its large outer borough stations allows you to transfer to the airport shuttle which takes you out to JFK. That same station also allows for transfers to the subway. The point is you've got multiple levels of train activity, which is something you already have and can expand upon with that lower level/table assembly. It could then be less intrusive to the streets and sidewalks with fewer grade level crossings. Perhaps down below could be where you also situate those older sets, sort of like what you'd see in a more rural area with a smaller police and fire station, etc. The older road plates would fit great there too. Looking forward to seeing where you take it...

One thing to take into note, you should put the skyscrapers in a place where it won’t obstruct the other lower buildings and putting the skyscrapers against the wall also hides the fact there is no back wall on most of the skyscrapers

Happy weekend Alex 😊 yeep same I'm sticking with the old road plate s I just put a cheep K mart brand plate down first then put the moduler s on-top of them which rase s them up a little .so the modules are easy to just lift up if need to move them. Than 4 big mile section s wich if needing to move house one day would be a night mair haveing such big chunk s to put into. Back of a car unless had a big truck to move them all. So it's way Easy to just put each moduler in its own big tub or 2 in each tub in on your side about the new road plate s I hate all the tile s in them but guess that's to add speed bump s .and as each road plate set is $25 Doller s each ..to do a hole city in new road plate is. Hundreds of Doller to thousand s .if got a city as big as your s an bricksie plus then. Thousand more for just plates to do the mile s plates 😢 bricksie must have lots of Mony in the bank...I hate to know how much Mony. He has wasted 🤩 on plates new road plates sets. to parts for doing mile s plate s..$$$$$$ crazy. I don't see any problem s with the old road plate s. With perfect corner line s than. Pixelated non rounded white line s .😊

I agree, I really don’t like the new road system. I actually like the older road baseplates much better, the ones you have around your hospital and in the residential area. That’s what I use in my city. Definitely keep the pedestrian area and maybe replace some of the downtown road plates with smaller pedestrian areas to gain more “space” and still have the buildings visible (like a lot of European cities have).

Not sure if you're interested, but there are tons of MOCs that people make of expansions to the Town Hall... maybe you could do something like that so that the town hall doesn't have to be between other buildings!

The only thing that came to my mind right away was that you should keep the hospital entrance the same if you ever redesign the moc again. It just looks so great. As for the downtown, I have no ideas as of now as my own is currently getting split into 2, and I am still waiting on parts to finish a project that will greatly improve it.

Yay, the landing gets some shelf space and Lego sets! Don't convert to the new road plates if you decide you don't like them. The last thing you want is a downtown of regrets when you look at the new roadplates that you have placed there. However, just a suggestion: you might want to raise your downtown to make it the same level as the airport?

Here's an idea, make the center area smaller and the bridge smaller so you can expand the city closer to the residential area just a bit and put the bridge more in the center then so far back and as for the Airport monorail, maybe you should consider making 2 separate tracks for 2 separate trains, 1 that is more incline to be used by the city and the airport and 1 that is more incline to be used by the residential area and the fairgrounds instead of having 1 HUMONGUS track for 2 sperate trains, 1 that is BARLEY even being used by you, because if you do that, you can have BOTH Trains operating instead of just 1 and you can build a monorail station in the center that can be used by both trains in your city.

if you really care about downtown real estate, if the 6th gen roads don't have sidewalks utilise the sidewalks of modulars with the 6th gen roads. Unfortunately, the town square should be shrunk too. 2 grids of 6th gen road are 32 studs compared to 64 studs because of the lack of sidewalks. if you're concerned about the lack of roadside parking you could try rebuilding your old parking garage but with a car elevator instead of ramps

Personally, this version wasn't my favourite. I would love to see some centre piece, i.e., town hall, small green area, with the statue, the skyscrapers, would be nice grouped closer together?. Hospital would be nicer on the edge of the city centre area, sort of like a real city where the different areas, industrial, living, commercial, old, new, all have there own defined areas. But i can't wait to see this version? What number would it be now?.

Stay away from mills plates. Why why why. No need for mills for your personal City. Absolutely no need for it. Think outside the box. What if between two rows of Modular’s you put a fancy walk way only space. Like in big city’s where there’s a block or two that is walk thru only because it’s too busy for thru traffic. You could put two runs of Modular’s back to back with maybe an 8 x walk thru built up between the center. And in the middle you could put the statute and open area. Around it. So it would become the center of the downtown. Does that make sense?
