20-day old worm bin's second feeding - red wiggler worm farm vermicomposting

After adding three loads of red wigglers I estimate the population of this 20-day old bin to be approx 3000 worms. To keep all those hungry mouths busy I apply a generous 2nd feeding. The previous feeding was 10 days ago

Fascinating..... I am now going to use a plastic covering. I think it will increase the quality of my one bin. I am going to cut it from one of the many shopping bags that the groceries are hauled home with weekly. It makes me happy to Repurpose them and increase quality of life for my 🪱 Worms. I Emjoy your Videos.... Thank-you!

That paper that you found bits in the center of your bin was a coffee filter you put there to mark where you fed last. I guess they ate most of it.

Thank you for the videos. I am learning a lot but I do have a question about the other bugs I have found. I have red and white mites what can I do to get rid of them or are they ok to have in my bins?
@A-V
@A-V 4 жыл бұрын
When I once had them in great numbers I did everything I could to get rid of them. I reduced the food supply, I reduced the moisture - I even applied some diatomaceous earth. Their number subsided and I was glad - but more recently when I see them I don't give it a second thought. I just see them as helpers in the bin. Its cool as long as they stay within the bin - and they do. Luckily controlling them is pretty easy if you find that they are really appearing in large numbers. Thanks for watching!

Great vid. Is there any benefit of freezing kitchen scraps or is that for convenience?
@A-V
@A-V 4 жыл бұрын
Both! Freezing ruptures the cell walls of the material - making it easier for microbes and bacteria to infiltrate and start the breakdown process after it thaws. It also helps preserve things till you're ready to feed them to the worms. Thanks for watching!

Why not blend and freeze or freeze and blend and pour? When I had a 6x3 Flowthru I usually blended everything so the worms would process it quicker, did that with eggshells too but burned a lot of motors (coffee grinder) lol.
@A-V
@A-V 4 жыл бұрын
I occasionally blend - but more often I prefer to just put in their food without having to prep it too much for them. Thanks for watching!

How do you manage to keep enough air flow with the plastic covering? Is weekly airing the top enough while feeding?

I have never noticed any issues with the plastic coverings. They must be getting sufficient air somehow. Thanks for watching!

For small scale growers, if grows are inside, grains with cellulose ( paper/cardboard) and a well composed material will insure the best pest control and eliminates any disagreeing odors. If outside, adding food scraps, manures, etc. are no problems.

I don't know what to expect. I don't even know how I would be able to monitor it. Lately I heard that the telltale for when worms slow their reproduction is the disappearance of their clitellum (that bulging section on their body). I'll have to keep an eye out for signs of it happening. Thanks for watching!

Foul odors only occur when something is going awry in the bin.. otherwise, the smell of the typical worm bin is fresh & earthy. There's nothing to fear - go for it. Thanks for watching!

What temperature do the worms need to stay at?
@A-V
@A-V 3 жыл бұрын
The red wigglers, like what are shown in this video, can tolerate a fairly wide range of temperatures. In fact, I have a system outside in which the red wigglers manage to survive the deep freeze of the winter quite easily. Other types, such as the African nightcrawlers, are a tropical worm which has trouble with temperatures below 50° F. Thanks for watching!

Wow , so many worms in one bin. How many do you usually start a bin that size with?
@A-V
@A-V 3 жыл бұрын
Out of curiosity I went though my records to try figuring this out.. and luckily I have fairly meticulous notes on all my worm bin work - so it was fairly easy to see that the population of that bin was the result of three separate releases of worms. And even though I have no counts or measurements of the quantities, I do have video showing it all. So if you are up for it, then I invite you to check out those three additions of worms into the bin. Those videos can be watched here: #1 kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZW0lql9adKehNE , #2 kzbin.info/www/bejne/paCnkGxjhrNomLs , & #3 kzbin.info/www/bejne/rISbmqGohrSZoaM . It just so happens that the third release of worms is from the 3-chamber carbon-only worm bin in which I filmed my channel's most watched time-lapse video. If you have not yet seen that video, then I invite you to check that out too; it can be seen here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5S0ineZpshjhM0 Thank you for watching!

Since I have no lids on my bins, I never get any condensation collecting on the walls. I submit that the worms are drawn to the moisture that collects on the walls & the lid of a covered bin. That is just my theory - I could be wrong. Thanks for watching!
