I love my foundry. Do you have a video where you go through all of the modifications you've made to it? In particular the quick disconnects you have and the sparge arm. I'd love some sort of parts list or some basic idea on where to find someone that walks through the process. Thanks for the great content!

I don’t have anything like that yet but it’s in the queue!

Color looks good to me, they don't all have to be chestnut. Mine end up darker because I always sparge a bit more and do a 3-4 hour boil on my electric. Kind of a weird thing with barleywine, they almost always have a chill haze when poured, but they clear up as they rest and warm - and they make good sippers.

Nice color on the barleywine! I prefer an orangeish-red over the brown muddy colors. Excited for season 3!

The best Barleywine I ever had is Samael's Ale from Avery. It's straw gold with some orange and ruby highlights around the edges and it tastes like a Moscato when it's young. As it ages it becomes a bit darker and starts to taste like some of the fortified dessert wines such as Port. To me, Barleywines start at 12%, anything below that is an Old Ale. I want to sit by a fire and work my way through a 12oz glass over the course of a couple of hours and be pleasantly toasted at the end of it.

Love my Foundry 6.5. I also use the 120v setup and haven't felt a need to switch to 240v.

Totally and I think I saw you can adapt the plug too so you could even go back and forth if needed

Great vid as usual. Don't you think its a bit over carbed for a barley wine, though? Thanks for all the great work, still loving the transitions.

How many pounds of grain have you managed to get in the grain basket of the AF6.5 for your bigger beers?
@HopsANDgnarly4 жыл бұрын
I think the hazy IPA I made was almost 10 lbs but since I got a Mash & Boil I’ve been leaning toward that for big beers

I hate the fact it doesn't have a sight glass, I'm always having to move the grain basket when draining and sparging or asking someone to look while I hold it up, but so far do not regret my foundry at all

I’m tempted to try drilling some holes but I would be so bummed if I ruined it

How is you quick disconnect attached to the spigot? I bought one thinking it would fit but the thread is something different from 1/2" NPT
@HopsANDgnarly3 жыл бұрын
Last time someone asked me that I reached out to Anvil and they confirmed it’s 1/2” NPT. You’re not the only one that’s had that same issue tho. I’d hit them up and if you hear anything different I’d love to know

That was your first beer aged in that oak barrel, right? I'm curious to see how the barrel changes after you continue to use it. I think repeated batches would also tune down that strong oak flavor, while increasing some fruity notes left in the oak from earlier beers. Especially if you don't steam clean it or anything!
@HopsANDgnarly4 жыл бұрын
Yep first one! I think you’re right and as soon as I drained this one I filled it with soda ash and water to speed that up a little bit. I’ve got another style in the works that’ll make its way into the barrel for round two very soon. Cheers!

I always struggle with wanting to “darken” my beers. I kinda can’t help myself with Chocolate Malts.. also, I imagine that beer in particular will darken over time. Unless you’ve avoid O2 completely, which I can’t imagine why you would, considering the style.
@HopsANDgnarly4 жыл бұрын
Didn’t think of that. Great point! I’m sure the barrel introduced plenty of O2
