I loved this! They should allow teacher's plenty of time to set up their classrooms. It's a huge undertaking! 😂 They should be allowed in a week before kids arrive for their first day. Most teachers are coping with having to shop and organize for their own kids, too! Only having sometimes 2 days to set up their classrooms, it's rediculous! 😂

This is so true! When I tell my middle school and high school teacher friends that I go in the week before school starts to set up and decorate my classroom-they laugh at me! But I do it for the kids- they need to feel welcomed and they always say they love coming to school the first day to such a colorful and inviting environment-😊

Yes, summer deep cleaning by the janitorial staff, plus if they decide to move you ( which was usually a last minute decision, made about 3 days before teachers are due back!), it's easier to move all your things.

Because depending on classroom size and number of students, this sometimes can change! So every year you pack up your room. In the fall, you redecorate. You'd have to decorate for your new year anyway. Calenders and things all would have changed. There are really great teachers out there who want to have an inviting atmosphere for their kids and go to great lengths to ensure that their new students' names are displayed and the new schedual and calenders are posted as well as all the creative touches. The opposite is teachers that really don't care and think it's distracting to kids to have these touches. Their rooms are stark and pretty bleak. These were the teachers I personally disliked! 😂😂😂

In other areas, they may start in late July and end in May. Many places east of the Rocky Mountains seem to start and end earlier than the West Coast. I think their summers get hot earlier and cool off sooner, but I do not know if that is any part of the reason.

According to other commenters, it is common to pack up before summer (8-12 weeks) for several reasons. Custodial staff often deep clean the floors (and other things?). They may paint the walls (or change the flooring or do repairs?). Sometimes, a last-minute decision is made to move a teacher to a different room (maybe because of enrollment numbers?). In addition, some schools allow others to use the rooms during the summer, such as for summer school classes.

In my US town, we finished the first week in June and we don't start back until the last week in August.... some districts in my country finished in May and start mid-August. Out here in rural communities, it's not unusual for our stop and start dates to be influenced by the construction schedules for the bonding referendums that FINALLY passed after years of presenting them to the voters. (a bonding referendum is a special election to approve an increased tax to fund a building project or other expense)

The school schedule in America varies quite a bit - our district gets out at the end of May and starts again mid-August. As long as the school year meets the requirements for hours/days of teaching required, local districts can set the schedule however it works for their area.

It's just different. I have friends in England and while so many states have different schedules as to when they start school and end, America usually has the same amount of summer holiday that England does but during different dates.
