Hiyas Lance, Hahaha, I'm sure it's been done before. I have done it in very random fashion when I just have scraps of each left. The pressing really jacked up the flavor; I'm really pleased how nicely it fits in the pocket jar. Yeah, the Boston Ivy goes absolutely mad every summer; I've gotta trim it back hard or it'll totally engulf my house. I do love it though. Thanks for dropping by my friend, always appreciated.

Hehehe, yer glass will be returned to yas empty my friend 😊. Burp...Pardon....It was great fun blending and pressing those guys; the results exceeded my expectations. By all means, get a pasta press and have a go at it. They are inexpensive as well. $20.00 on Amazon. I called in a favor at the shop and had our lathe hand turn up a 2" dia x 1/8" thick piece of stainless for me to use as an internal base plug. The presses only come with threaded end caps with various hole or slot patterns for squeezing out pasta. Happy blending and pressing my friend. Looking forward to seeing how you get on.

Hiyas Israel, thank you for stopping by brother, much appreciated. I do enjoy both blends and I always wondered what a paring might taste like. I did some very random mixtures, using the dregs from both blends to make up a final bowl and was intrigued by the results. This time I was more scientific in my approach; using % mixture by weight, heating in the microwave and pressing it into a plug. The more structured approach paid off I think. I've finally, after 50 years of piping, come to enjoy straight Virginia blends: as long as they don't taste like celery!! Serene smokes

Hiyas Brian, "Ants on a Log" is a classic and I also really enjoy a good cream of celery soup!! I have not tried cheese whiz on a celery stick yet, but it does sound tempting. Hiyas Jim, Those two blends are high up on my favorite Virginia blends list. In the past I've mixed up random scraps of them together and been fairly pleased with the results. This time I was far more scientific and precise in my % mix by weight and heating then pressing them. The effort paid dividends. We could use the rain here. We are officially in a drought. This May was the 4th driest May in 145 years of records. June hasn't provided us any relief as yet. Fortunately this last 2 weeks have been cooler, mid to upper 70's and lower dew points. My dear Miss Worm, always so nice to hear from you. I love my summer porch; early morning tea and a late evening whisky tastes so much better out here. Oh my, 80* here is considered a cool wave in our summer swelter; we routinely see 90*-95* for weeks on end. Yer bathed in sweat just sitting still.....in the shade. I actually hate hot, humid weather; I reckon that I'm just an old Viking that misses the fjords. I do enjoy the longer daylight though, and the gardening. Since I brew my own beer; I thought I'd have a go at blending my own tobacco. I make it a point of honor to drink and smoke my mistakes as well as my successes; fortunately this experiment was a success. Thanks for dropping by.

The Blue is my preferred flavor profile of the 2, but the yellow is a very nice smoke on a warm day. Pressing rather than simply blending these 2 tobaccos made the flavor slightly more intense for me, in a good way. Compressing 50gr of tobacco into a pocket jar has it's advantages as well. The pasta presses are surprising inexpensive and you can always use them for their intended purpose if you find that pressing is not your thing. Thank you Hugh, much appreciated. I purchased a Newcreativetop Stainless Steel Manual Noodles Press Machine Pasta Maker from Amazon for roughly $20.00 + shipping. It comes with 5 threaded end caps with various hole and slot patterns for pressing different pasta variations. You will need to place a solid disc in the base of the end cap to block any tobacco bits from squeezing out under pressure. The tubes internal diameter is roughly 2" 1/8. As it happens , I had a 2" disc of 1/16 thick stainless in my toolbox from some past project. I thought of cutting a 2" disc out of tin foil prior to coming across the SS disc I hope it all works out for you; if you chose to go forward with it. Happy pressing Gary

I absolutely loved this video, my friend. What a great experiment! As you know, I’m a fan of OGS. I may have to find a subtle peanut butter topping, with raisin note burley, and OGS mix so you can better enjoy the celery. I’ll share your observation of Capstan yellow. It’s the same thing I like about C&D Bourbon Bleu. The citrus side of VAs lends a refreshing smoke that i very much appreciate this time of year. I’m curious, have you played at all in the realm of compression levels? Some blends are increasingly compressed over the course of several days and I’ve heard of some being compressed, taken out, tossed/ broken, and pressed again.
@oldandintheway1955
@oldandintheway1955 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words Marc, they are much appreciated. As it happens, I do like OGS, after I've stoved it at 200° f, for 4 hrs. 😊 It transforms to a nice toasty, malty flavor profile; no peanut butter or raisins required. Ants on a Log is a classic!! My Mother's favorite after school treat/snack for my sister and me. I've not heard of pressing, breaking the plug down and re-pressing it. I'm not sure that a pasta press could muster the required compression force to reform anything short of totally rubbed out tobacco. There must be an element of heat involved in that process. It does sound like and interesting proposition, done with the right equipment.

Hello Gary! Wonderful to see you, you look very summery! What a fun project, Capstan Green sounds excellent. The blue is in my top five and has been since the beginning. I know that my grandfather would sometimes smoke the blue, whenever he could find it and afford a tin. I remember the now discontinued Capstan Brown, which was a savory and earthy virginia, a bit like FVF but much less sweet. I enjoy blending a lot, but Im much less organized😅 Usually I take wht is left of some burley blend, put some kind of virginia in it along with some crumbled cigar leaf. Usually comes out very nicely, but of course always impossible to duplicate😄 Be well my dear friend, let’s do that Skype call soon. Emil

Actually the last 2 weeks have been very nice temperature wise. We haven't had a drop of rain in nearly 6 weeks, 4th driest May in 145 years of record keeping. Our lawns have turned to concrete. Capstan Brown sounds delicious, I wonder why they halted production. I've made free form versions of Capstan Green; usually from the dregs of my Blue and Yellow jars. Even though it was haphazard; I was pleasantly pleased with the results. This time I decided to be precise and more scientific about the % mixture by weight. The extra care and thought paid off. I think that being a home brewer lead me to approach this more like crafting a home brew. A recipe (very simple in this case) with precise amounts weighed on a scale. Gary, you need a green pocket jar and that puck looks scrumptious! I recommend an Ulu knife because you can rock the blade to slice vs chopping. I have the Gerber version. Works great for citing flakes from plugs. How long did did you compress that plug?

Thanks for the knife reco Sam; I'll definitely look into those guys, the one I used just doesn't cut it. Yes, I agree, a green pocket jar is called for, the red jar is probably a fashion faux pas. I kept the green in the press for 7 days, each day I cranked on the handle to keep the pressure on. I do think that the 10secs in the microwave helped with the initial compression and blending as well.

That sounds like a really fun project Sean. I do believe that the 10 sec spin in the microwave really set the ingredients up nicely. Warmer and pliable. I'd get them in the press as quickly as possible, post heating. You could try/ test a small sample to see what you think first. I hope it turns out well for you!! Press On!!

Hello. I am a former bee keeper myself and was wondering, lately I have seen less bees in my area than in the past. How are the bees in your location? Maybe it's just me? 💨

Hiyas Terry mate, thanks for stopping by my friend. I had a lot of fun with this and will definitely do more blending when I conjure up the right ingredients to use. I infused a Virginia/Burley blend with rye whisky and thoroughly enjoyed the results. Next time I'll microwave the tobacco just before pressing it. I have mixed the Blue and Gold before, with out pressing it. Although I wasn't precise with the % mixture as I used the dregs of both mixtures I had left in their jars. The results were pleasing and it lead me to this go round. I do feel that there is a slightly more intense flavor to be had with the pressed version. The differences or intensity of flavor is worth pursuing in greater depth going forward. Next time I'll mix up 100 grams of Green; jar 50 and press 50. Happy blending and piping my friend, Gary

Nice production. Canerod Piper Mike has done this years ago. Pressing into pucks. Capstan is the most over rated over priced label out there. Macbaren version is meh. I’ll take any K&K Virginia any day. Especially, for the same price per oz, the Curley block.

Thanks for stopping by Eric. To each his own; thankfully there is a wide array of great tobacco out there to sample and enjoy. Happy Piping.
