The fretboard and my ear really opened up when I placed greater emphasis on triads. If you listen to really melodic players, they use chord tones to launch into melodic themes. Gilmour, Knopfler, and even most experienced jazz improvisers rely heavily on chord tones to create melody.

I’ve been playing and singing for fun for around 30 years. My whole time playing I’ve mostly just played open chords for country songs. I use some triads and some bar chords but mostly just open chords. I know music theory fairly well. I’ve always wanted to do more on the guitar than what I do but never could take it to the next level. About two weeks ago I started practicing my triads. I’ve been teaching myself all the triads on the neck, practicing them over and over, and applying music theory to them. It was like a light bulb went off. I’m starting to see the different shapes on the neck and how they tie into scales. I’ve taught myself more in the last two weeks than I have in the last 10 years or so. I wish that I would have learned more about triads whenever I first started playing. It’s made guitar fun again.

I really like this. It really shows how the simplest things can work so well. It also shows the importance of staying in the scale, and demonstrates how to embellish at the same time. An even simpler example of triads is at the intro to Hotel California. Triad arpeggios repeated over a 4/4 rythmn, changes at each measure. Pure music.

Good day, thank you for sharing your expertise with us all. You are quite the master. Been playing guitar for over 50 years. Not very technically. Primarily just for the spiritual aspect of it all. And always love to learn more and be inspired by wonderful individuals like yourself. So much going on in life, is very difficult to make time to enjoy playing. Let alone practicing new things. However this is a great inspiration. And we all need this sort of release. Also love your guitars. Have many that were in expensive etc., and set them up myself. They sound and play just fine sometimes as good or better than the expensive ones. Always wanted a 12 string electric. Kind of like a Rickenbacker or something. Looks like you may have one.
