Thanks Shane. One of the main ways I use triads outside of soloing is in a 2 or 3 guitar situation, it's always nice to use inversions and alternate positions to highlight the open chords during a song. This is a great way to avoid unisons/doubling.
@UpliftingRiffs

Johnny! Yes exactly I completely agree. Nothing worse than 3 guitars playing the same root position chords. It sounds muddy and uninspiring, using triads breaks us out of that and gives new flavors of the chords. 😃

UPLIFTING RIFFS< really dive into how EVH used 3 note triad inversions and dyads double stops instead of using barre chords or open chords. EVH uses dyads double stops but will add in different bass notes on the E and A string. He does this on the late 80's and early 90's van halen songs. Try making a YT lesson about how EVH uses dyads with different root notes because he will jump all over the neck playing different dyads instead of playing barre chords per each chord change.

Are you visualising the pentatonic scale of the key of the music or do you visualise the pentatonic for each individual chord? Say you change from A with a pentatonic fills to Bm, are you then using the Bm pent scale for fills? I hope my question makes sense 😂
@UpliftingRiffs
@UpliftingRiffs Жыл бұрын
Sam great questions and to be honest it depends! In this case I'm taking both approaches. If you can play licks & fills with the notes in the chord as it's passing by then that's always best. That helps target the correct notes.
@samcornish3757

Thanks for the reply! Great content! Id love to see a video where youre playing this kind of stuff but just openly voicing whats going through your head in terms of visualisation. I have all the shapes of the pent scale in my head but I struggle hitting the chord tones and all my attempts at lead sound very samey with little to no direction

7:07 I can’t quite pick out your notes (frets)your using as the fill. I’ve tried to slow the video right down but it’s hard to see which fingers are down fretting. I know the pattern, but just can’t seem to get the same sound as in the video. 😅

7 -9 (a string) 7-9-11 (d string) 11-7 (d string) ??
@UpliftingRiffs
@UpliftingRiffs Жыл бұрын
I just looked at it again. It's hard to explain here but will try real quick. It's a slide from A string 7 to 9 then catch the D string 7 to 9 then slide to 11 to back to 9 to 7.

@donk9132
@donk9132 Жыл бұрын
You might be still fretting the bass……..but the guitar is fretted more with the tips of the fingers……sounds like maybe you just need to arch your fingers more …….to get the clear tones…..maybe study w a guitar teacher or just ask a guitar guy how he gets the clean tones……maybe later you can get a little funky w the way you touch the strings………don’t say you can’t…….say I’m gonna get this……don’t put yourself down brother !!

No, doesn't work. Its more like many people _think_ its easy and start to play. After some technical first steps, they find that they don't sound good, and its because of their musical inner ear that's not existing. They start to learn where the chord tones are, but this is not enough to make it, because they don't have a musical imagination in their mind that could be put to real phrases to be played. So they think they can learn licks and yes, this might help, but if there is no musical imagination, there will be nothing to be transported from mind to instrument. You can't _learn_ musical expression by spotting chord tones. Also licks will not do. You don't improvise music like: "Next I go up to the 8. fret and play some notes out of the box and will target the third, then I will go back to the other position and will do a trill on the 5th and then land on the root note." It doesn't work like that! (You wouldn't talk like so as well, you just speak out, but not thinking grammar at the same time) Any thinking of notes /concepts while playing will interrupt the musical flow, will cut the connection between mind and music, therefore it will not sound good. Music doesn't arise in the analytical area of the brain. You rather play what you hear in your mind in real time and if you don't hear anything, there will be no music. No matter what theories you might know.. Its like singing freely in the bathroom not thinking about anything at all. If you can imagine a musical phrase just spontaneously and sing it, then yes, you can learn how to transfer it to Guitar too. But lots of people just don't have that imagination and wonder why they sound like exercising scales. Plus, for people who _do have_ the inner ear, it seems so obvious and easy to improvise that they think they can develop concepts to teach less musical people how to improvise. Never ending lesson! Because only ear training, singing and listening to tons of classical material _might_ lead to an inner ear - for adults a matter of decades. Just learn how to sight read instead and play what others have prepared for you. Will avoid tons of frustration.
