The job may look liesurely but the fact is a letter carrier only is permitted a certain amount of time to sort and deliver his mail, and the amount of time he uses is recorded and kept in a data base. Everything a letter carrier does has a specific time allotment for it. During heavy mail volume periods if he will need more than 8 hours of time to complete his route his has to get permission to take more time, which would be overtime. If he takes more than 8 hours to deliver his route without permission he can be disciplined. And walking around in bad weather and in bad neighborhoods delivering mail is not pleasant at all.

People have no idea. There is such a high level of accountability and so many Do's and Dont's that can cost you your job. You're constantly being monitored and tested and drivers observation surprises. It's like working in a Nazi camp and/or being in 3rd grade. You can do 1,000 things right and all it takes is one mistake to cost you your job. Get out of the truck with the engine still on....instant fired. Miss a precious amazon scan...that's a write up. Two more and you're fucking out of here. Miss an express by 1 minute...that's riiight, off to the gas chambers to you. You're finished mister. 15 years of service down the toilet. Nobody cares about past performance here. Heck they don't even want you there to work. You can't show up early especially if it's busy because that would make no fucking sense to need more time to handle more mail. You have to leave for the route like an hour after you start work. It's clock in now get the fuck out of here, like now! and then they want you back in like 3 hours from the street like all you have is one parcel to deliver for 500 house holds.

Not to mention you have to watch out for all the crazy drivers as an rural carrier,dogs,property and children God forbid if you get into a accident there is so many obstacle that add time to your day which they don't care about, but they pretend that they want you to safe but do it as fast as possible with no mistakes and while your at it here is some shitty attitude from management to add to your stressful day and customers complaining they didn't get any mail today when you know for a fact they didn't get any in the first place sorry the mail was like today.

@@Novaximus The supervisors are playing a game and the carriers have to play their game too. Every route is fucking 8hrs to them no matter if one route has 250 stops and the next route has 600 stops. They make no sense.!!

He says his parcels are in order but his truck's a mess. I can't do it that way. Everything has to be lined up just so or it drives me crazy. But the day goes pretty smoothly when everything is lined up perfectly.

jeffw1267 I see guys line them up all the time. I don't waste time doing that I just kind of throw them in the truck, the first ones I deliver up towards the front, the rest I just work by street as I do them. You hit the brakes once and they'll all mixed up anyway LOL.

Delaware always seemed like a beautiful state to deliver mail in!

This was a short educational video that displays some of a carrier's duties on an everyday basis. However, the news reporter should not have handled the mail nor should she have delivered it!
@jeffw1267
@jeffw1267 7 жыл бұрын
I would imagine it'd be possible to get permission for this, since the reporter certainly needed permission to ride along. But generally it is illegal for non-postal workers to handle the mail like that. Technically even I, as a mail carrier, can't handle the mail if I'm off the clock.

Dude, this was during the busy season? Were are hundreds of catalogs like Khols, Boscovs, LL Bean Money Mailers, Political Mail, Virtua's, local spam news papers, Thick ass cabella catalogs, AAA monthly's HomeTown Magazine Clippers, Plow and Hearth, and the 101 other 3rd class things that seem to jam up my case to the point of having to pull it and leaving the rest for the afternoon because there's simply no more room left in the case much less all of the Lumps and Bumps and raw letters? Where was it all in this video?? he has like two pieces of mail per house (minus the DPS of course) Even his truck wasn't packed with packages. We have to make two trips that time of year because you can't fit it all.

In 2008 when the housing recession hit the post office was getting pretty close to going out of business. They had no plans at all on reinvesting any money into their fleets or infrastructure. It was even like that for some years before the recession. Now that people are lazy and don't put on pants anymore the post office can't do anything quick enough to keep up with the demands for home delivery. They've been trying to settle on a prototype for the new LLV's for over 5 years now. The greedy bastards already took on a new contract with new over sized packages in anticipation that their bigger trucks will be able to handle the load....only problem is we're getting the packages but we STILL DON'T HAVE THE TRUCKS. They have some newer vehicles being made but that's for like Cargo Vans, Postal Maintenance trucks, Big City haulers. Just not the LLV's. They better have A/C in the newer ones.

Novaximus The newer mail trucks don't have a.c. still just that shitty circular fan. The design also sucks for delivering curbside or dismount there is no longer room to walk from the cab to the back the tray comes all the way to the chair with a small space for the emergency break. The are also no shelves in the back which sucks for organizing packages into groups when the mail is heavy
@Novaximus

Do you have a link or no where I can go to see them? Only like a month ago I read in my carrier magazine that they still haven't decided on a prototype for curb side vehicles. What you're describing sounds to me like the FFV's. Our LLV's didn't come with shelves but our office ordered some that easily hook into the slots on the inside wall. Huuuge difference.

Novaximus Oh ok I have only been with the Postal service a 2 and a half years.(still a CCA) I figured FFVs were the new design. I don't have them in my office but I hate working with them when I help in offices that do.
@Novaximus

They're newer than the LLV's. I honestly don't know the full story behind them but I've been a carrier since 2006 and we had them back then. Nobody likes them here either lol. I don't know how they did it but they some how made a bigger truck that has less space. xx
