Aloha! According to Jake, he says a lot of it is user preference, kind of like a truck debate, Ford vs Dodge. From his experience around tow surfing and water safety, the Yamaha wave runner FX high output model has been a proven and trusted jetski. However, if you are going to use it for fishing, you will need to outfit the jetski for fishing on your own or find someone to help you. If you are looking for a jetski specifically for fishing, Seadoo makes a good fishing jetski called the Fish Pro. It’s actually a pretty badass jetski, just hard to get in Hawaii unless you buy in California and pay for shipping to Hawaii. As for distance, every jetski and day is different. On a nice day flat day when you can go easy on the throttle, you can go further than a really rough day when you’re fighting the wind and waves. A good rule of thumb is to start the journey with a full tank of gas, and before you reach half tank, start making your way back. But ultimately, go with a partner. Jake is pretty sure there's a boat ramp down at south point if he's not mistaken. On the nautical chart, it looks like it’s roughly 18 miles from Punaluu to south point. So that’s 36 miles round trip. That’s further than he'd comfortably like to go on the jetski without extra gas. Legally, you’re not supposed to take extra gas on the jetski because you can’t refuel your vessel on the water because of spills and environment issues. We hope this helps! Aloha, it's a rescue sled made by HSA (High Surf Accessories). They are very pricey ($2K+) but there are companies that make rescue sleds as well.
