For those who are afraid of worsening conditions in PR if the island becomes an independent, sovereign nation, just try to have a "look from the outside" approach. Frankly things can't be worse than it is now, as a US Territory. We are still bankrupt, financially and as a society. We are getting closer and closer every day to what we define as a failed state. Young people have no opportunities. Everywhere you go, everything looks run-down, businesses closed, infrastructure crumbling. There is no optimism for the future. Prices are sky high, mainly due to the Jones Act. Many politicians elected are a bunch of useless puppets to corruption, and they reflect the character of the people that elect them (it happens here in the US too). But worst of all is seeing we have no valid representation in Congress to watch for our interests. Puerto RIco is exactly as the US government wants it to be; poor, fully-dependent and with an ambiguous political status. There is but two or three districts (AOC's being one of them) in the entire US, where their constituents seem to support that their representative in Congress spend time and effort to vouch for Puerto Rico's interests, in terms of equal treatment. The rest are naturally "out of sight-out of mind", or would never OK that their Congresspeople spend their constituents' time fighting for Puerto Rico's due. I probably wouldn't allow it either if I was a resident of those states! We are the property of a country that has never considered Puerto Rico worthy of becoming part of them. Remember, we are not PART of the US, we are a PROPERTY. I don't even consider the term 'colony' appropriate or applicable anymore. We used to be a colony back when there was "Latifundio Monocultivo y Ausentismo". But colonialism has morphed into someting more obscure, much worse. Empires appreciated and supported and invested in their colonies. There was a mutual gain, and many times, pathway for sovereignty. For Puerto Rico now is nothing but loss. There is no benefit in being a territory, when there is so much more loss than gain. Things could be much better if we were not a territory. It is, and has been US policy, to maintain PR as a territory for many reasons; military/geo-strategic, risky medical and agricultural testing grounds that could never be done in the mainland, and many more reasons. But the biggest one is that Puerto Rico is a hot potato issue for Congress People. Almost no one in Congress wants to confront the reality of Puerto Rico while holding a seat in government. It is too much of a risky and touchy subject, re-election-wise. And the people who are suffering are not worthy of their time, effort or risk.There's this belief, by both sides of government that the balance of government will tip, affecting one party, more than the other. So let's be brave and consider independence for Puerto Rico. We have NOTHING to lose. Not anymore. No more Jones Act. We will be able to make our own decisions, do trade and commerce directly with other countries (which will bring more money than what we "get" from the US), especially those countries that see us a equal, not as inferior. We will create financial hubs, improve our tourism industry, restore our industrial facilities back to the glory days where college graduates had a great job waiting for them. We will mature as a country and end this destructive dependence on US money. A big part of the diaspora, myself included, will have a way to return and enjoy living there. All those things... We've hit rock bottom. It cannot get worse than people not having hope. We are slowly dying. Like a human colony on Mars or outer space. Only a change in status can bring that hope, and a roadmap to reconstruction back. Thank you MS Graulau for this very important video, and the effort you put forth for this forum for us to learn and share our thoughts and opinions. Eagerly waiting on the next!

Independence would probably lower property values and make it easier for Puerto Ricans to buy homes/land there. It might make the business environment less favorable as well, which again would lower property values. Outside influences from Cuba, and other strong man states in the area would increase. Puerto Ricans will be more responsible for their own success or failure. Certain constitutional protections might not carry over to a new PR constitution. It all an experiment. Lastly when you go to the PR you do not feel like you’re in the US at all.

AOC haha. Bianca, your channel is too advanced for that. But jokes aside, take a look at the island nation of Palau. Search online or find books on their country and how they formed their status. That's the best option and route for Puerto Rico now, and given how the world is now. But for the love of God, Puerto Rico must finally implement their own immigration/visitor entry laws and requirements. Puerto Rico is not a state of the USA and it's not a free-for-all. PR deserves respect and dignity, but most of all protection. Also look at Bermuda. They remain a territory of the UK, but they have their own immigration/visitor laws and requirements. UK citizens cannot just hop over to Bermuda and live there. UK citizens have to face the typical 90 days stay upon arrival, with no employment, vice-versa. And their real estate, there are laws to protect born-Bermudans and put them first. As for the passport, Bermuda has the known UK Kingdom passport, but on the cover below the seal, it reads something like "Bermuda". That's why I think of Bermuda whenever Puerto Rico issues come up, because Bermuda is still a territory of UK but is basically a country and its own unique culture. You can't deny it, and same goes for Puerto Rico. Thank you for all you do, Bianca! You are a true ambassador of Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 ❤

However personally would be in favor of Option 2 -- where PR although still directly connected to the US, can still have total autonomy of themselves, i forgot the term she called it. I know that these will come with their cons but i want for puerto rico more than anything to have more control over themselves and their own economy and use the natural resources they have within the island already for the benefit of their own people instead of being so insanely co dependent and exploited by the US even if the US gives "benefits" ...

Statehood is very important for Puerto Rico. I was born in Rio Piedras but was raised in NYC. I Cherish my American citizenship and the right to vote. Future generations of PR should be able to enjoy the right to true citizenship. What exactly does independence mean anyway. Independent to do what and who rules? A lot of the Islands politicians are corrupt so what would happen to ordinary PR citizens without the Federal help that we have now? Not wise at all

1st point, Puerto Rico is not a Common Wealth, and it is not U.S. Territory incorporated or otherwise. Puerto Rico is U.S. Colony, and has languished in colonialism since the arrival of Columbus. 2nd point, your "historic" bill, binding or not, by offering a choice of free association, if chosen during any future plebiscite, will only result in allowing Puerto Rico to continue languishing in colonialism. 3rd point, passage of this awful bill will not be the first time the U.S. acknowledges Puerto Rico as a U.S. colony, the U.S. government has always known this fact but has chosen to hide it behind veiled names, such as territory or common wealth. We Boricuas have always known we are a colony, since before the U.S. Annexed Puerto Rico from Spain; and, do you care to explain how it is you don't know anything about the U.S. Supreme Court's Puerto Rico v. Sanchez Valle, ruling? Where the U.S. Supreme Court, the judicial branch of the U.S. government, affirmed Puerto Rico is a colony. Finally, there has always only ever been one way forward where Puerto Rico's self determination is concerned, a choice between statehood, or independence. Will your so called miracle of a bill, that will have the U.S. Department of Justice, overseeing any future plebiscite, allow non-Puerto Rican born, U.S. citizens currently living on the Island, to vote? It seems to me that a decision of self-determination, should be decided only by Boricuas. There is already too much gentrification occurring in Puerto Rico, and it seems to me that fist class citizens might prefer to continue enjoying the very generous tax privileges the U.S. government has allowed them at the expense of the second class citizens of Puerto Rico, still languishing in colonialism. Estado 51 YA!
@Anacaona4 Жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said, but I think a TEMPORARY status as a free associated state needs to be used as a transitional aid in PR becoming independent, especially financially. PR has to learn to walk before it can run. I also believe the US has a responsibility to genuinely help stabilize the island's infrastructure (like the electrical grid), not as a means to put the island under further "debt," but as reparations for all the atrocities done to the island and its people.
@felipemendez8453 Жыл бұрын
@@Anacaona4 At this time, and during the last plebiscites addressing the question of the Island's political status, the people have voted decidedly for statehood, and of course, the U.S. Congress has found every excuse to reject their request to join the Union. The time of El Grito de Lares has long since passed, I seriously doubt a majority of Puerto Ricans will vote for independence. Finally, the state of the Island's infrastructure is a direct result of how much the U.S. cares about Puerto Rico and her citizens. So while I agree atrocities have been and continue to be committed, how can anyone expect the U.S. to make reparations? A temporary free associated state is the same lie that el ELA that el PPD kept telling everyone. Puerto Rico is a colony, plain and simple, and as such there are only two ways forward, statehood, or independence. This third option that the congresswomen is suggesting is just another lie, that in the end will only worsen things for Puerto Rico.

Buen trabajo Bianca.

The benefits of independence we can be open to the world and trade with them. Yes, there is history in the past and we can go over and over the injustices of the past or present.
@jonathanmolina35292 жыл бұрын
The main reason people say independence is the best option is because we could trade with the whole world but no one sits and think... trade what? The Dominican Republic can trade with the whole world also and let's compare them to PR. We have nothing to trade with the world. Puerto Rico doesn't manufacture anything. Our current economy is based basically only in federal funds and in the US. Most companies in PR come from the US. If PR becomes independent we lose the federal laws that we have regarding economy like the minimum wage. The new wage will be depending on our economy so it will most likely go down to even $1/hour.

You are literally as European as any American, probably more so, Americans have a large % of Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and African Americans. Puerto Rico is mostly Spanish, in what world is Spanish not European? Spanish are literally Roman Descendants, that's as cliche European as you can get. Hence the whole LATIN America. America itself is literally named after an Italian explorer Amerigos Vespucci. Stop pretending that the entirety of North/South America isn't mostly European culture by this point, it is and has been for a while. By the way, recent evidence shows that people were in the Americas before the Native Americans came. Proof that all land is conquered, welcome to reality, every ancestor is Imperialist. Yours, Mine, Everyones. Africans, Europeans, Asians, Beringians (Native Americans). All are Imperialist. Stop pretending only Anglos are you racist, and stop acting like Puerto Rico is any less European than the US, it isn't, it's probably more European if anything.

I am a Puerto Rican-American from NY and do not support AOC or her political goals. It is difficult to believe that even Puerto Ricans born within the 50 states are treated as second class citizens, but it is true. It is worse for some Puerto Ricans who are Veterans of the Armed Forces and still cannot land a job once they separate from the service. Discrimination is real people! NYC Civil Service Agencies discriminate against people of color and label them as unfit for specific job titles, which is disheartening.

Also, I find odd PNP says they want statehood even though they do the opposite of americans values such as independence, invididuality, self sufficiency, resilience , pro market and etc. If anything they remind me of corrupt democrats or even some comunists the way how they behave. They even coarced some free speech from political dissidents. How that american like? Or even be some don't speak well in english and only their sons do. Lol. What a joke that party is. Even in all these years could not get the statehood and deluding puerto ricans we are diferent from any latinamerican when white american see us as mixed , brown or black and some american resent us and see us a weight and nuisance. Mainly baby boomers americans regardless we are liberal or conservative. Of course, not all american view this way to us and some love living here but I do know some who hate us and see this country as shithole with citizen of horrible characters ,lazy, entitled, loud people and with mediocre food, mediocre beach and all of those negative stuff. Not trying to play the victim here but I giving reality check to my folks that thinks having an american citizenchip we are better than other latinos and make us special when its truth first world nations views nothing special about it.

I have several friends that are PR. It's my understanding by talking to them that the country is split between independence, and statehood. I for one, would love to see PR become our 51st state, but of course, that is up to the people of PR. I can understand their reasons for not wanting to join the United States, but I can also understand why they would want to. Ultimately, it's up them, and the United States should honor their decision.

Puerto Rico can be fully capable of being Independence from the United States. The island can be the science manufacture and producer for the world, life science and the like. Definitely will need the get out of the corrupt Luma energy provider that keep stealing from the poor thanks to politicians' relatives in San Juan. It truly has the potential to be Independance if they truly want to.

There's another scheme that the Netherlands used with it's Caribbean Islands: in theory placed them in equal status with mainland Netherlands, each manages it's own government except on defense, nationality and foreign relations. Each island sends a representative to the Netherlands and viceversa, to represent each other's interests, as well as serving as a sort of ambassador to the government but with voting status. Each can trade freely, manage their own taxes, have their own central bank, currency, airlines, etc

That's true for Aruba, Curaçao and Saint Maarten. But how about Bonaire, Saba and Statia? They're integral public bodies of the Netherlands. (Openbaar Lichaan) meaning they're integral part of the Netherlands BES Dutch Caribbean. Bonaire is facing the same as Hawaii where rich retirees from the Mainland purchase land and build villas and they're quickly depriving the local islanders from their basic rights of their island.
