Hi, Spirit of the Law. I'm the designer of the Almeida and Bayinnaung campaigns. Thank you for making this video. It's great to give the fans some more historical details and I appreciate that you noticed all the little historical nods I put in the scenarios. There's a couple interesting historical figures you didn't mention, though. Timoji appears in the fourth scenario as a recruitable player. This Indian privateer allied with the Portuguese and actually warned Almeida about the Zamorin's impending siege of Cannanore. He also helped supply the Portuguese St Angelo Fort during the siege. Malik Ayyaz is one of the leaders in the final scenario. He was also an interesting figure, as he was either a Croatian or Russian mamluk who wound up in India and served the Sultan of Gujarat. Also, the Venetians and the Republic of Ragusa assisted the Mameluks and Ottomans in the Battle of Diu, surprising as they were Christians in alliance with Muslims and Hindus. It's a bit of a stretch to say they had ground troops in the battle like I depicted in the scenario, but they did provide naval advisors so I wanted to make sure they were reflected. That's why the Mamelukes have the feitorias. Just to give you and the fans a little more insight into the development of the campaign: Francisco de Almeida wasn't the original protagonist. I actually outlined the campaign and began designing the scenarios for Afonso de Albuquerque. The second scenario of the Almeida campaign was originally the first scenario of the Albuquerque campaign (Albuquerque was the commander of the Fort Graciosa fort at the time, as you pointed out, but Almeida was present in the region as well). The reason for the change was that Albuquerque's career path was more geographically scattered and confusing than Almeida's. Albuquerque's progression would have been: 1) North Africa, 2) Horn of Africa and Ormuz, 3) Goa, 4) Malacca, 5) failed campaign in the Red Sea against the Egyptians. I decided against this as it meant that Albuquerque would be in a prison cell during the great and fascinating Battle of Diu and it was geographically confusing with the backtrack from Malacca to the Red Sea. With Almeida, I could use his career as a proxy for a linear representation of Portuguese exploration and conquest: beginning in European conflicts, going to North Africa, then East Africa, then finally India. Surprisingly, I did not have to change my basic plan for the campaign too much as the two men had eerily similiar lives and ends. In fact, Albuquerque was also 'fired' by King Manuel when his replacement showed up and died of an illness at sea while sailing home. By the way, I had no idea I used 'Jackals' so much!

I don't play AoE that much, but I do think that the Almeida/Portugal campaign is the best, mostly to all of the triggers and complex ways maps can be completed (it is also the only AoE campaign that I played through to the end).

Can we take a moment to appreciate how kickass the Portuguese campaign is? Constantly outnumbered, often surrounded, usually backed into a corner. You've usually got a strong, defensible starting location and a tech advantage. Add all that up and the clear solution is to sit back and build up a big army before getting things done right? WRONG. The story's constantly encouraging you to not wuss out and hide in your hole and to instead get out there, wade through those mooks, and kick ludicrous amounts of ass, and the maps reward you greatly for it. It's a seriously great experience, and probably the best campaign pre-Raja HD has to offer. Bravo!

That was my final conclusion once I tried maybe 8 or 9 different strategies to start the map. Something outside of my comfort zone, just constant action and micromanagement.

Wow, I know that painting at 3:04 anywhere. John of Austria was the son of Isabella? AKA the guy who saved Europe from the Ottomans in the Battle of Lepanto (The same Battles of the Conquerors campaign)? Bloody hell, it's amazing how all this history is connected.
@Blueharvester1983
@Blueharvester1983 8 жыл бұрын
Sadly, it looks like he used the wrong portrait. He used the image of John of Austria (who captained at Lepanto) (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_of_Austria). While the John he was talking about was John of Asturias (who died aged nineteen) (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John,_Prince_of_Asturias) As awesome as that family connection would be, alas! 'Twas not meant to be.

Great video! Your pronunciation of the Portuguese names was very good, even João, which a lot of english speakers don't even try to pronounce it correctly. The only correction I would make is Lourenço. The Ç is always pronounced as S, so it sound more like Lourenso than Lourenko.

@cg8397
@cg8397 4 жыл бұрын
Goa is included, but indirectly. The 'Estado da India' scenario involves the pirate Timoji on the island of Anjediva in Goa. Timoji was a Goan chardo whose family had fled Goa for Honnavar after the Bijapur invasion. He became a pirate attacking only Muslim ships, and ended up providing military support to Afonso de Albuquerque during the conquest of Goa in 1510. You can read the full story about this time period in Goa in this book, because it's not taught in Goan schools: www.amazon.in/dp/B01228DX1A/

Point being this campaign was doomed for inacuracy from day one. Hey Spirit, I got an idea for a video. I found out that you only need 11-12 arambai garrisoned in a castle to make it fire 20 arrows, which is the maximum. I found it to be extremely overpowered. If you could calculate the dmg from the castle vs ungarrisoned units combined etc, it could make for a very interesting video. :)

Some things to say about the campaign: Long comment: The history is interesting, Scenario 1 I was able to obtain a monk before being given the purple, so just battle most of the yellow and orange until a little bit is left and then research redemption and convert most ally buildings and villagers and this will give you villagers and town center research techs and also destroy most of the grey even before they turn against us. Then finish the objective and it becomes easy. Scenario 2, I first take all my starting units to find and rescue the allies down there since the waves of attackers prevent me from being able to get resources. I begin by then defeating the yellow and the cyan first. Then I wall off the green from being able to attack me by land. Then I research all techs and also defeat the grey ship by converting it and it has heresy and destroy that purple who I don't understand their purpose. Then I give the red a organ gun for objective then I destroy them except their castle first. Then I defeat green and then finish the red castle to win. Scenario 3. This on is tough, I first begin by not bringing any heroes to any objective area, (also scouting the whole sea) but have a unit lure some enemies near the water with my army in transport ship and then on the shore slowly hit and go in transport until I try to eventually defeat the annoying orange and purple enemies first. I try to prevent fighting against zanzibar since he would be a problem for me on water. I would never execute the hero since I like him and his stats are good. But even before kilwa becomes enemy with me, I use bombard cannon attack ground the castle until it has less than 100 hp. Then I bring a hero to the on land town center and go around trying to own or convert every remaining green unit. At this point the yellow become my enemy and their endless waves of war galley. So I defend on land with a castle and begin to fight yellow in water until everything towers castles and ships that can damage me on water is defeated and a galleon on stand ground to hit enemy villager trying to build a dock. Then I defeat them on land and only keep the wonder alive. Then time to build a lot of towers on water and battle zanzibar. I defeat zanzibar and then cannon galleon to finish the scenario with their wonder. Scenario 4: I begin by just defending my self on land by protecting myself against the first waves that attack after the gate dies. Then begin by gaining complete control of the water. The green will always build a dock. I do the secondary objectives and then begin by destroying everything cannon galleon can reach starting with towers and docks. then I carefully position galleons on stand ground so that they become unable to build a dock. this takes about 11 galleons. then I use the area where the pirates that I now own to build feitoria and market and town center with villagers on wood and a villager comes with me to build stuff since the next enemy to focus on will be the cyan I make sure the cyan die and the red I try to replace enemy gates with my own so that they can't escape, then I begin cleaning up red from outside after only defeating the cyan army inside. Then I defeat the green who is difficult with both kinds of elephants in use until I sacrifice 5 trebuchets on their castle. Then they become easier to defeat. then I finish the scenario by defeating the red. Scenario 5: This scenario is easy. Before finishing the conversion objective, I can use mangonel attack ground on those palisades and also research all imperial age and build my economy. Possible to win by building a wonder.Since all the others don't attack me, I can go out and defeat them all and then finish by converting the units and win the whole scenario very easy. Overall while some parts are difficult, it has a lot of things to make the campaign not so pressuring and difficult for casual players.
