This is such a fantastic commentary, especially for someone new to the game. Instead of just passively stating that one player has built a port and moved their archers to the shoreline, while another built the wall and skirmishers (which I've seen a couple of other AoE youtubers do), you explained their actual thinking behind those, and many others, actions.

It's not fast paced enough, the starts of the matches are rather boring a lot of the times. When you compare it to SCII (which is probably the best comparison you can make due to the genre) the differences are huge and the common viewer will most likely pick the more fast paced SCII instead.

I started doing multiplayer recently, first starting out losing horribly and quickly. Watching your tutorials have helped me last a bit longer, The Castle age Rush video helped immensely.

It's kind of amazing to see how far the game as come and how good players have gotten. It sounds like spring was a very strong player at the time, but he does some things that would be considered very questionable plays in competitive games now.

Spring just conceded too much land... But that really came from when he placed his fishing dock on the wrong side; because he didn't, he conceded the shore line and Viper took that advantage scouted out the crossing and slipped a villager through to set up that 2nd front. With that 2nd front established he was playing defensively and with no land... He should've probably called for a restart but gg none the less. I did like that he tried to recover from that by just focusing on that of what he could do.

I don't think he placed his dock wrong, He placed so it maintain control of the land path. if his plan was to have a land war, the control of that one point was key. What ended it was viper using his horse to slip in a villager. He got a land war without the land. If not for that villager the battle would of been fought over that one strip of land, and having ships isolated from naval warfare could turn the land path into a blood bath.

I like the farm and the water mods. Very pretty. Also they should totally let you have fishing traps on reserve in the dock and also let villagers deposit shore fish at the dock. Hopefully steam will make a patch that allows you to do that.

SilentSpring's dock location @ 6 minutes ingame, I think that really screwed him up because there are no other fish there except shore fish, which are slow to gather from. Bad dock placement. I think that is what screwed him up this game.

I'm confused. Viper saw the stables - and decides on archers? Yes, sure, he's got gold/wood income, but you don't really want to fight scouts with a few archers.

he used his archers to harass villagers and slow the enemy economy. I'v never seen that, he gave up drawling blood for slowing food income. it cost him but it also kept the fight on the "safe" side of the map

Why is it that when I watch these KZbin videos of the game, the forests look so sparse? When I play the game, the forests are thick and you can't see each individual tree. Is there some option that makes the game appear this way?

If u're playing HD version on steam you must download from the steam workshop a thing called "pussywood". If u're playing on normal aoc version then download small_trees_v2a from aoczone

*This mod is used by every pro player; trees don't obscure their view.* Search for "pussywood" on AoE II HD Edition steam workshop. And then subscribe to it so your trees won't be thick again. For normal AoE II you have 2 options: 1. Download userpatch 1.4. 2. Download BoekaBart's AoE II Widescreen Patch. For AoE II HD you have 0 options. It is already HD. lol
