You can also see the inverse between Gon and Kurapika in how their relationships with Killua and Leorio play out from the Hunter Exam. Gon serves as the model of childhood Killua strives to reclaim, his tether to the normal world that keeps him from slipping deeper into his killer impulses. On the flip side, it’s Leorio who serves as a pillar of normalcy for Kurapika, the most mundane member of the core four who reminds him what untainted friendship is like. Notice it’s Leorio who calls Kurapika over and over while Gon is comatose, desperate to drag him back into the world beyond his grief. This is also why Leorio acted as hostage negotiator in Yorknew, and I suspect a major part of why Togashi had him join the Zodiacs along with Kurapika. As we focus on this pair more (would love to see an arc with Leorio at the wheel), we’ll likely find Leorio further struggling to rein in Kurapika’s self-destructive tendencies, especially when they collide with the Troupe again.

Exactly, rather than melody the character that parallels killua for kurapika is leorio in my opinion. Not to mention how his initial goal to leave the clan was to find a DOCTOR and I don’t think togashi would mention it just because. Despite how much leorio gets sideline I do believe him to be such a central character for the whole story, he fulfills everything the other main characters wanted to initially find. For Gon he’s the anti-ging/good father model he strived to find, for killua he’s the anti-Illumi/older brother figure/family, for kurapika he’s the doctor. All of them found they were looking for in him

It’s no coincidence that when we are just learning about the world of HxH (Nen, animals, people, the underworld) we see it through Gons naive perspective, early in the story we are just like him, naive on what’s to come. And the chimera ant arc is what breaks us as an audience and Gon as a character. And once we have the full context of the world of HxH we go right to Kurapika, someone who was fully aware of the depths before us the audience and Gon himself. Dude HxH is so good man

Visible not only in the following of content-creators, with fans of Rion Studios or Amagi maybe not knowing the go-to KZbinr for all things hxh-related: New World Review, and the fans of that guy maybe not knowing the Amagi or Rion Studios. But theres more: Slime-Tensei-Mods exist for Minecraft, but there is no such thing for Nen. Fanfictions exist in written form, but they are too rare. But what really gets me is the lack of real-life-fan-films, despite Special-Effects barely being important in this specific franchise and everyone possesing a camera nowadays. great vid i think this dynamic foreshadows a darker end for kurapika. what gon got right was the friendships he cultivated, which is why alluka was able to revive him. the story rewarded him for making friends and gave him a chance to work on his flaws. pika on the other hand has been opposed to the story's themes by isolating himself, PLUS he only continued on this path after being given a second chance after yorknew. makes me feel like his end will be a darker one, as opposed to gon's.

Another point to Kurapika and Gon being inverse to each other, especially with regard to their purpose, is in their nen abilities. The only reason Gon chose Rock Paper Scissors for his ability was because Bisky brought up the history and it intrigued him. When pressed about why he chose it, he said he just liked Rock Paper Scissors. If something else had been interesting to him when developing the ability, it would have been based on that. Gon's ability choice was effectively random. On the other hand, Kurapika's nen ability could only ever have been something that could help him capture the Troupe and find the eyes. It had very limited forms it could have taken.

Also, Gon's abilities are inherently simple - they're just attacks that deal damage. Meanwhile, Killua's abilities are all complex, situational, and not even built for combat; his most used combat chain is just a divination tool.

Gon and Kurapika are my favorite characters due to their path of self destruction, their unique way of thinking, their fight scenes, how they interact with other amazing characters like killua, leorio, chrollo, hisoka, etc. Killua is a great character but feels like his journey and path to redemption wouldn’t be as impactful without the downfall of those two.

Gon and Kurapika may have been the only ones to use nen vows as act of overpowering their enemies, but I would definitely consider Abengane’s nen beast summoning for Genthru’s bomb a pretty big nen vow as it came with the trade off of carrying the damn thing around with him. Great video btw!

if we look at the four protaginist of Hunter X Hunter, all of them are monsters in their own right, except one. They all represent the darkness of humanity. killua is a boy nurtured to be an assasin, he feels no remorse in death. Then w have gon, the person who'll sacrifice all his ideals, who will become a monster for his revenge. Then we have kurapika, he's someone who has thrown away his life to be an avenger, will destroy himself in his vengeance. Lastly, is the contradiction, leorio. He is the heart of the group. I believe he will die on the dark continent to show how humanity doesnt belong there, and that to survive the dark continent you have to become a monster.

Counterpoint: Leorio survived the Hunter Exam, which is also only meant for only monsters to make it out of. However he is a pretty static character which makes him susceptible to being killed off for the sake of developing the other characters, but i think he’ll be alright (copium)

@@mokyodai Togashi isn’t afraid of going with the standard shonnen tropes he just likes to put a twist on it, Also it would defy our expectations in a pretty positive way since Leorio is a well liked character and everything about the hxh world at this point has taught us he would likely die, However Leorio is quite talented and is being taught by the Current chairman, Leorio has the support of the zodiacs and some of them already hold respect for him, He is incredibly popular in the hunters association and even Ging himself respects Leorio, It is not at all a far fetched theory.

I especially liked your point about Kurapika's goal being directly contradictory to the overarching message of the story that's personified by Ging, since Kurapika's goal is a dead end. I think it'd be really interesting if we got to see Ging and Kurapika interact to see that foil get expanded on since they have directly contradicting philosophies, which I haven't seen people talk about

It's sad to me that their relationship in itself is underrated anyways. The way the story builds around the both of them is great, and their friendship is also one of my favorites even if it is so little. The reason Kurapika pushes Gon away the most is because he cares so much for him. He's able to at least communicate with Killua and Leorio to some degree, but we haven't seen Gon and Kurapika interact since Yorknew. Now Kurapika is in a situation where he can't push the people he cares for away from him, that being Woble, and I think Oito will help in putting a voice to that. Also, I think Bill is going to play a big part in his character arc as well. The flashback in volume 35 where Izunavi talks to Kurapika about allies is what makes me think that. Up to this point, Kurapika has been very reluctant to depend on his friends, if he did so at all in the first place. It seems like now though that he's putting his trust in Bill, as, without him, I think room 1014 could have gone down in flames by now. It's thanks to their collaboration that they're able to keep themselves afloat right now.

i always said kurapika is the second main character and not killua🤦🏽‍♂️. it’s like goku killin and vegeta. yeah krillin is the main character’s best friend and had more interaction time with him b4 the sequel, but vegeta is the second main character no question. kurapika is no question the protagonist of this part of the story

@@Julian_Heruwell DB isnt as plot based as HxH so vegeta doesn’t have an arc per say. but he has the most character fleshing-out every arc next to goku. buu arc he had MAJOR character development. he was damn near the 2nd main character to the whole frieza/namek saga. moro arc he literally got a training arc wit yardrats. ultra ego, SSB2… if you don’t see it bro i don’t know what to say. gohan only real development came during the universe tournament where he says he wants to find a new form that isn’t super saiyan god. vegeta has been fleshed out next to goku at EVERY turn of the story.

I personally don’t view the current arc as a detour or side story. HxH is about more than Gon, but he is essentially the main character, kinda similar to how YUYUHS was about Yusuke and his companions. I see it as Togashi also dedicating the story to the side protagonists (kurapika, kilula, and maybe liorio?) to flesh them and their stories out better than he did with YYHS so that they dont just feel like side characters and everything being about Gon. To me this is a wonderful approach and very refreshing since its rarely done and most manga artist primarily focus on the main character while giving little to no time to side characters. Especially because HxH’s side characters and antagonists are actually very interesting and as a reader I want to see them fully explored and don’t want the story to just be focused on Gon 95% of the time. I love both Kurapika & kilula and want to see their stories fully fleshed out, I want to see them grow and get new abilities and get into new fights, I want to see the same for the phantom troupe, the hunter zodiacs, the zoldicks, Hisoka, and more. And Togashi is mostly giving us that, so I’m pretty happy with the story thus far.

Characters completing each other is a major theme in HunterxHunter. Pair this fact with Nen/Aura and a whole new dimension opens up for you. Why are Illumi and Kikyo obsessed with Killua? They're opposite types. Why so many Conjurers abilities lean on their weak Emission? Why Enhancers are so determined. And most importantly, why Specialists are complete in a sense, loners.

I think Kurapika will end up misusing his chainjail and when his heart is peirced, the culmination of the subversion of his arc will reach a head and be the opposite of when Gon fought Pitou. I think in a moment of post death nen his chains will be imbued with his new overwhelming desire to live and bring him back. Hisoka did something similar and Kurapika actually has a healing ability.

at first i was in shock at your strong belief that kurapika will die but looking at the parallels it is HORRIFYINGLY true. gon ended his journey by completing his goal and losing his nen, reverting him to a normal boy with a normal life and no further story to tell (yet). kurapika is stuck on this boat with the ENTIRE phantom troupe, of whom are ALL searching for hisoka to kill. emperor time is draining his life, and hisoka has already killed two other troupe members. this all takes place in the midst of the succession war in which only one prince would come out alive, which all mean one of three things: - together with hisoka, kurapika will defeat the rest of the troupe or die trying (or die after because of emperor time) - prince woble survives as the final prince, with kurapika sacrificing his life either to let her live or to kill tserreidnich and free the remainder of the eyes - woble dies with kurapika dying in the process or with the same battle with tserreidnich as the second one it makes me incredibly sad to think about, but it just makes too much sense. kurapika in his story has no reason to enter the dark continent unless the troupe or tserreidnich does, in which case he will die then. his narrative was doomed to a tragic end in the same way gons was fated to a complete end

An amazing video but i feel like you're wrong when saying Gon and Kurapika are the only nen users shown using conditions or limiters, it's just never explicitly stated. For an example, Kite's wheel could be looked at as his limiter that actually makes the abilities stronger like Kurapika. Or melearons' ability, it probably wouldn't be as effective if holding his breath wasn't required (could be he can be heard or felt or something now), but that's just my theory.

I kind of wish the role Melody has with Kurapika was also something explored through Leorio. Though he does have that similar role to play in some cases and does help situate him differently to the role played by Killua, just general interactions would be nice. I know it's the joke of him being the forgotten protagonist, but other then an ending that might never come (where I do personally belive the theory of him becoming the head of the association) I would like to just see more or at least be assured that his story is still in mind for Togashi.

Nah it’s not over, Togashi doesn’t really make his characters’ stories end unless they die. The story is all about making your goals flexible enough so there is never a dead end. There’s the stuff with Gyro and Don mainly for Gon. Personally I’m more happy to see Kurapika though.

There is no reason to think Gon is gone forever, as Togashi has never stated that. Some fans have speculated that Gon will never return, and they spread this speculation online as if it were fact.
