It was a real pleasure to be able to work on Reiner, as he is in my opinion, one of the most interesting characters of AoT.
I really tried to focus on his complexity and show how broken he really is inside.
edit : the part between 3:40 and 3:50 has a really bad audio, i'm sorry, the music was just really loud in that part.
I hope you will enjoy the video, i don't know yet if i will make more AoT videos but i do love working on this anime.

I find Reiner's predicament to parallel a situation that often comes up in real life when discussing or protesting the military or war in general. It is not that Reiner is naïve or ignorant to the terrible nature of his actions. He has already regarded his station in life and has still made his choice. The information presented to him - the terrible truths - are not new. "If only these ignorant fools would detach themselves from the inconsequential turmoil of men and nations. If only they could step back far enough to see the folly of their ways." That's just it though. They already have the perspective. Being without allegiance is a privilege that likely none of us will ever get to enjoy. We participate in the world, and the world has a say in our lives. The enemy has a say. For all our enlightenment, empathy, and foresight, it changes little except for the grief we feel. What does a person do? They accept the laundry list of grievances, and believe the benefit can still outweighs the cost, and even if they're not the best guys, their home is good enough to live in and thus good enough to fight for.

Reiner is the most fascinating AOT character, he was used his entire life starting with his own mother then Marley, but then he found peace amongst the people he sought to destroy, he became his own person among his fellow Cadets, Marco's death proved it as he finally mentally broke from it. Contrary to his own opinion and many others, Reiner was always a Soldier never a Warrior, same goes for Annie and Bertholdt. In the manga, during the Rumbling, he was finally welcomed back as one of the Survey Corp, they brought back their big brother from the abyss of despair. *Spoiler Down* "The Survey Corps just doesn't know when to give up. And that's who we are." Jean to Reiner in Chapter 135.

Bertl dying almost exactly the same way (& all forensic complaints aside shitgoddammitNO, human heads *don't break that way*) ...cough Jean saw Marco's body, he saw Bertholt die, he sees how messed up Reiner is & he's one if the more intelligent+empathic characters in the story. He doesn't have much room for righteous indignation.

Bro I am probably the last person to get this, but when Bertholdt says to Reiner that they are warriors and not soldiers he's refering to the fact that they are Marleian warriors. It's such a good detail hidden in plain sight that you don't think about on your first watchthrough, it's amazing how there is so much foreshadowing that you don't even think about. Like yeah, the first time that you see this scene you think that it's weird that Bertholdt cares so much about using the proprer nouns, but then when you realize what he actually means it elevates the scene to a whole different level

Now I can say Reiner is the best character in the show. Some would say it's Eren but I don't think so. MANGA SPOILERS Eren: Eren was a boy who lost everything and hated every titan in the world. Then he became one of them and when he touched Historia he saw the future and he had to accept it and "keep moving forward". He became a demon just to protect the one's he loved. Reiner: As a child, he didn't have a dad and everyone in his country hated him. He became a warrior just to find love in his dad but his dad didn't love him again. A friend died because of him and he killed a lot of innocent people thinking they were demons. Later, he knew that these people were innocent and treated him better than the people in his country (he had the best time of his life). Then, tired of life tried to kill himself but still living for his friends. He is still fighting. Even when he has the armored titan, he is the weakest of all.

Reiner is probably my favorite character, alongside levi, and you made such a brilliant video about his character. The music was chosen perfectly, I'm never going to be able to hear these songs again without thinking of Reiner. And I was surprised at how intense this got towards the end, especially when you showed the "keep moving forward" parallels at 4:36. Working without 5.1 audio is a pain but your editing does not seem restricted at all by it. Beautiful work, Jesse!

I freaking just want to give Reiner a hug. He was always trying to do the right thing. I dont blame any of the kids (reiner, bertholdt, annie) because they'd been brainwashed and abused their entire lives. And after Eren understood the nature of the world as they did, he decided he needed to kill EVERYONE.

i think reiner contradicts and doubts himself since he started by thinking the island was full of devils and that killing them would make him a hero and a son that his parents could be proud of. He would prove he was a good eldian and that eldians are not evil but in the process knows of the mass devastation he caused and death when he broke the wall since he thought the people of paradis were demons. But after living among them for so long and learning with them, he learned that these people were not the devils the rest of the world painted them to be. he learned about how much these people feared titans even though everyone outside suspected they were the threat. Reiner also lost so many people on the way to his goal. In a sense he is very much like eren. He is so dedicated that no matter what or who he has lost of the consequences of his actions he finishes the task. Even when eren first asked why reiner broke the wall, he shouted "did you think we had a choice" showing his guilt even though years before he had the choice to do it. Deep down he secretly regrets his actions since he was the devil that killed thousands of people and is what marleyans describe island eldians to be but would do it again to protect his family and make the eldians of marley proud as well as his father. He is one of the most well written if not the most well written character I've ever encountered. He is so complex and is not a complete villain but neither is he a hero. Even though he is painted as the villain the producers make it that we support him and still hope he has a good ending! I love this series because anyone can be the hero since everyone had a motive for their actions not just the main character.

Such an amazing edit my friend , Eren is the founding Titan but Reiner is not , they are both sick of death and war but are willing to distroy the world to end it period( i think even Reiner is willing to do it ), Eren has chance to do it, he can see a glimpse of hope and light to save his loved ones but Reiner is so far from the light , he just doesn't want anymore wars , but he is incapable to stop it , that's why he wants to kill himself. , for both life is a living hell .

Remembering Eren's depressed voice hurts him so much and in that moment he was petrified because of his regret. This is just my opinion and I don't know anything about editing. I just wanna say that I think you did an amazing job!
