So information packed, first time I watched it I learned a lot but didn't do too well on my homework because I did not pay that much attention during class. After reviewing what I missed, the second watch around I realized just how much I missed from the explanation on this video. Thank you so much!

in 10:37 , are the unshared pairs for the central or the other atoms? Also your videos are the best out there!!!!
@JeremyKrug
@JeremyKrug Жыл бұрын
The unshared pairs that we 'count' are the ones on the central atom only. Those are the ones that affect the actual shape. Great question!

how do you count unshared pairs? also, whenever counting the hybridization, do you always just add 1 because the sigma value is always 1?
@JeremyKrug
@JeremyKrug 27 күн бұрын
Each pair of electrons touching the central atom that doesn't touch another atom counts as an unshared pair. For hybridization, the number of sigma bonds is the same as the number of other atoms the central atom is touching. So sigma bonds would most likely be a number between 2 and 6.

if possible please explain how you got the added up numbers for the hybridization at topic 7 10:10
@JeremyKrug
@JeremyKrug 6 ай бұрын
Just count the number of atoms the central atom is attached to, then add the number of unshared electron pairs on that central atom.

Question, at 4:21, isn't a sodium atom bigger than that of chlorine? Since in terms of trends, it is on the same row and leftwards, therefore should be bigger, or?
@JeremyKrug
@JeremyKrug 5 ай бұрын
Yes, but notice that these are ions, not uncharged atoms. Cations are generally smaller than the anions that they associate with. Great question!
