Those research papers I did in high school are nothing compared to the papers I had to do in the class I took for a few months (Also a reason for not uploading for a while). Best wishes to those that have to take this class and if you don't....then good for you. Enjoy the video. Fun Fact: I actually managed to finish this thing in a week. Goes to show how much I missed doing this.

One thing I do like about APA compared to MLA is that while in MLA you have to cite the specific page # you pulled the information from in APA an in-text citation just consists of the authors of the work and the year the work was published
@Ellaforeverlife2014
@Ellaforeverlife2014 5 жыл бұрын
APA only required the page number in an in-text citation if you are using a direct quote, but most people don't do that. In fact I don't think I've seen a professional research article with a direct quote.
@mastertren

I may not like having to follow a citation style to the extremes that college expects, but honestly, APA is way better than MLA, Turabian, etc. I think all the "no-creativity" and "you have to cite everything or you're plagiarising" is just true of every college paper I've written. What's sad to me is that it takes more time to format and cite than to actually write the paper... pathetic!
@allialuzong2342
@allialuzong2342 5 жыл бұрын
Amen on that last one. All the deductions I ever got were because of those. And yeah research writing isnt about style anyway but it isn't impossible to write with a certain 'tone' in APA format. Naturally, of course, you wont be writing anything entertaining because that isnt the point.
@Heres_To_Music
@Heres_To_Music 5 жыл бұрын
I agree on the plagiarism point. Also, citations work to build a nice house of cards that work to prove a point not just some theoretical work because someone is running behind on an essay. I disagree on the in-text citations, as they clutter the text (and over citing is the norm for me) and distract a person from the main point. In Chicago style at least you could just use footnotes and use "Ibid." to get to the point.

Instead of using MLA like I've always been taught, they're making us use Chicago Turabian style (which is 86336774337763367523774 times more complicated than MLA). Anywho, I've been sick a lot this semester, so rn I'm writing the whole paper that's due on Monday..... yeah I'm probably like that stupid guy working on his at 5 AM XD (although I hope I'm not up that late 😶) Anywho, thanks for providing a much needed mood lightener for another suffering college student 😜

At my university, we have PSY 304 aka Basic Research Methods. See, I would rather do research papers than what we did in this class. We got a team at the beginning of the semester, and together we had to do 4 experiments and write papers on our results. All as a team. While our instructor basically made up rules as she went 👍 Also, I learned MLA in high school, wrote in APA and Chicago for 2 years, and now I have a teacher that wants MLA again and I don't remember anything 😑

I am a fellow Psych major and have suffered the equivalent of that class but it was called "Research Methods" and we had the class be the experiment. Like we had to fill out a survey online and compare depression and anxiety scores to things like friendships, exercise, and relationships. You are so right with the creativity, I put down "Forming friendships is very important in childhood" and the professor wrote "SOURCE???" and I thought it was common knowledge that friendships were important. In the end I had to source every freaking idea and back it up and god it was so grating.... to other psych majors good luck.

apa is super duper important to research and credibility. more often than not you’ll actual find that despite the strict citation rules, even PhDs misconstrue info from other studies in their own studies. if you have the ability to ever take a research class or like....do research on the history of research or “how to tell if this research is good” is actually hella fun and super satisfying. what you learn can help tons in academia.

I laughed at the horizontal-line thing in the tables 😂😂 But to tell you the truth, just wanting to share this, APA has been a standard format since I could remember in my school years. So when you expressed your distress over the APA format and the backed-up article thing, I honestly cannot relate 😅 Yea, it's tiring to search for those studies that will help back your study up, but it's not really that bad. In fact, it helps us in formulating our conclusions.

There is part 1 with a lab where we learn about research, how to read articles and search for them, write a literature review, etc. Then there is part two, with a lab, where we conduct our own research study that has to get approved and we learn a lot of statistics and how to use SPSS, and then write the entire paper, attend a conference and talk about it, and then present it in class, with other small assignments. Glad I am done with that lol.

There are a couple of APA alternatives, in our uni we have to just choose one of them, the idea is exactly the same, the main that that my uni does is that they actually hardly accept any recourse given prior to a decade ago as outdated, meaning that you have to either find a relatively newer paper that confirms or builds upon what the older papers found or simply move for something different. I guess if you have to do that for 5 years you get used to it and you can actually find ways to be creative, of course at the cost of backing any kind of creative thought with validated research which results into double the research you have to do. It is whatever, it helps out a lot on your thesis I guess.

I got an A on both the class and the lab. And the APA research papers helped me tremendously with my other psy classes and sociology classes (I’m a sociology minor)

Omg😂😂 I almost thought hey, that's not true! But it was. Everytime I write for my thesis, i hv a mindset saying smthg2 must be supported by past study. It drives me nut everytime i finish searching for research articles, write a creative sentences, then search again to support the sentence. Don't get me started on past research examples!!!😫😫😫😫

Bruh. I'm a History Major and a Business Minor. I feel you! I have written papers in MLA, APA, and Turabian/Chicago Styles. Switching between the three styles is annoying. And the whole plagiarism and dry, boring writing style thing is too real. And yes there is a version of this class that exists for History Majors too. It's the Research and Writing class and it's basically Psych 311 but with the topic being History instead of Psychology. I got through it with either a B- or a C+, but I would never want to take that class again.

For anyone that has to make citation and that is watching this 2+ years after this vid came out... There are software that help you manage your citations :v After you write your citatacitaion this softwares insert the citations in the format you need (APA 6th and 7th edition, and the format of scientific magazines, etc), and at the same time they insert all of your references in the format you want, it basically writes your bibliography , you don't need to do anything manually. Additionally the software save your citatizacions. They will not do the paper for you, but they will certainly help. Some examples are Zotero and Mendeley :v

This Is so relatable because my high school uses MLA for English projects but for our science fair (which is 10% of each of my science class’s final mark) we need to use APA and I hate it so much

All my papers for my upper division child development courses had to be in APA format. It was annoying, but I got used to it. Haha I found the manual useful sometimes, but yeah... I only really used it for the actual writing class made for writing research papers in the child development field.

I'm almost done with my bachelor's in psychology. I'm so used to APA that I was upset when another class used Turabian. Lol!!! I was so happy to finish that class so I could go back to APA. 🤣 Oh, and I hate that APA manual. It puts me to sleep. Hahaha!

OH GAWD I FEEL YOU. I'm currently a Psychology major myself and am in my senior year. So.. *BAM* Thesis says hi. Our initial draft was given a recommendation about "USE APPROPRIATE WORDINGS, THIS IS AN ACADEMIC PAPER". Like it's so damn hard to write something that people will not enjoy reading and are just a bunch of restatements, using thesaurus.com, and make one sentence be as long as possible to make it sound "professional".
