(17 Jan 1975) RR7503 CYPRUS: ON BOTH SIDES OF THE LINE
Cuts are available: z062353
In Nicosia, the leaders of the two Cypriot communities,
Glafkos Clerides for the Greeks, Rauf Denktash for
the Turks, have begun discussions on a new political
set-up for Cyprus. On the Greek side, elements of the
shattered economy are beginning to work again -
some factories have resumed production, citrus fruits
are being exported from Limassol, a new airport is
being built at Larnaca. Schools have also re-opened.
But 40 per cent of the work force is still unemployed,
and the future of 200,000 refugees has still to be
settled. In the northern part of Cyprus under Turkish
occupation, little has changed. Kyrenia and Famagusta
are still virtually ghost towns. In this report, we look at
the situation now, visit a Greek family still living in
Kyrenia, and attend a Turkish Cypriot wedding.
