South Africa is marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of apartheid in 2019.
Apartheid, the Afrikaans word for "apartness," was made up of a collection of strict laws targeting visible minorities in the country and is viewed as one of the darkest periods in the nation's history.
For nearly half a century, non-white South Africans were stripped of their freedoms and suffered under government imposed restrictions.
The face of the anti-apartheid movement became Nelson Mandela - who was jailed as a political prisoner for 27 years - whom would later become the nation's president and an icon of freedom and justice.
So, how could institutionalized discrimination take hold in South Africa, and what steps were taken to bring an end to apartheid?

My mom grew up during apartheid. She was placed in colored. And she talked about the rough childhood she had. She grew up in a fishing village, and she was not allowed to have as many opportunities as a child simply because she wasn’t white. She married a white man, my father, after apartheid and I can’t even imagine how odd that felt. My dad, who was an American college student at the the time, first met her on a college trip. And my mom fell in love with a man who she wasn’t allowed to love years ago. My parents moved to the US in 1999 And today, I’m the child of my mom’s story

Yes, it was safer back then - as my grandmother has told me countless times before - however, black people didn't really have the freedom we currently have. Every time I see that word, I get the chills, because it sounds familiar to me since I am dutch, but Ive never heard it being used... Liek a ghost word. I used to feel proud as a kid hearing other countries saying dutch words, but as an adult I realize theres one prominent dutch word thats internationally known; apartheid. And the meaning isnt something to be proud of, no, we should be collectively ashamed. I didnt learn much of the DUTCH colonial history (theyre good at hiding behind France and Great Britains colonialism, and how important WWII was) but now, Im doing my own research.

The problem actually started in the days of Noah, and Nimrod actually was the first person after the flood to own people, they were red people, descendants of Japheth. See Jubilees 7. The blacks in the USA apparently want apartheid. In the Southern United States, the African Americans are the majority yet labor laws in their favor still apply even though they descriminate in cases against whites which go unheard. Meridian and Jackson Mississippi are majority black cities where this goes on. Jubilees 8 from the Ethioian Bible implies whites birthright are where it is hot and cold, blacks where it's hot, and red which ya don't see much now because of Nimrod and others later from the line of Ham subduing them where it is cold.

Louie Jada No, the situations are not equivalent. To begin with, radical Arab nationalists have political representation in the Knesset. Did South African apartheid grant political representation to black citizens? I don't think so. And intermarriage between Jews and Arabs IS permitted. Let's not discredit the cause of 'justice' by forcing dubious analogies. And I don't think that terrorist attacks upon civilians advance 'justice' in any way. I respected Mandela a lot, but a man cannot live forever on this earth. If he died a Christian, Mandela would be in heaven. The same privilege is open to people of ANY ethnic origin, but it surely helps if they hear the Gospel. The best hope for Palestinian Arab people is and has always been Christianity. I am happy to call some of them brothers and sisters in Christ. But as I hear, they have been having a hard time in recent years from TWO directions at once, the Israeli government AND their muslim fellow-countrymen. The way of Christ is NOT to seek solutions through political violence. We are supposed to obey public authority, whether we like it or not, unless it commands us to do something evil. As for the 'people's right to revolution', that is justification for murder. Take a page from Mandela's playbook and seek reconciliation with the 'enemy'. The 'enemy' is often remarkably like oneself; in fact, one is sometimes one's own enemy.

During my secondary school years my trunk tin for books was broken and photos of my relatives and family members were stolen and given to apartheid regime security forces to attack my family and relatives where many of them lost lives and others injured because of that. Even tho the party responible for apartheid was founded by a English south afrikan, I still think its due to colonisation from the Dutch and Brittish that it got to that point. And its mind boggling to me that it lasted until 1994(?). Like back in the 16 hundreds I get that rules laws and stuff where non existand and its basically survival of the fittest but in the 19 hundreds? Cmon. Also I feel like here in the Netherlands atleast, not a single line in the history books tells the tale of that period. All it was, was a dictatorship. The last hopes for even a gradual liberalization died after the defeat of the Unionist Party under Jan Smuts, whose government had just published a report advising relaxed measures, such as greater employment rights, not full equality, but a step in the right direction. And he tried, calling in support from Blacks, Coloureds and Indians when he could, relying on the pro-British South African Anglos and trying to use the monarchy to shore up support, but in the end it wasn’t enough...

Not a dictatorship. It is more accurate to describe the regime as such: the regime was a racist, sexist, fascist authoritarian whites-only democracy. A dictator has one leader for life. The Apartheid regime was democratically elected and held elections every 5 years. They just didn't let non-whites vote. Edit: It was definitely a dictatorship over Non-Europeans, however. Rule by proclamation = dictatorship, and that's how the Department of Native Affairs ran that side of the country. The Native Administration Act 38 of 1927 enabled the government to pretty much run a dictatorship over non-Europeans. If your definition of a democracy is that of an egalitarian society based on the promotion and protection of human dignity and freedom, then sure: no, the Apartheid-era South Africa was not a democracy. This is the view of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, and the 1996 model of democracy is the one that I personally believe to be the best. But a 'democracy' is nevertheless how the Apartheid government was seen by their supporters and allies - its systems were modelled off of the Westminster parliamentary democratic model, after all. However, the Westminster system failed to affirm the protection of human dignity. Instead, it allowed the passing of unjust laws as long as, in principle, everyone in power agreed to it - that's how a democracy was used to create a dictatorial powers. At times and in some respects the South African government could 'rule by proclamation' - such as via the powers granted to the President under 'states of emergency', or at any time over Natives/Blacks/Bantus via the Black Administration Act 38 of 1927. 'Ruling-by-proclamation' fits the definition of dictatorship, but, again, this was not the complete system of government. The National Party was never the only political party to vote for. The sad reality is that the National Party were just very good at attracting voters and manipulating (and violating) natural law to be exploited for their own ideals. It's terrible, but that's what happened. Remember, the USA has been a democracy since 1776 - but most African Americans and other American minorities were robbed of civil rights until within the past 70 years. In some states, regardless of your complexion or culture, you weren't even allowed to vote unless you owned a certain amount of property - i. e: you couldn't vote if you were poor. Apartheid-era South Africa was deinitely a seperated and unequal stratified society - 'whites' lived in a democracy with a social net well-funded by the state, but 'non-whites' were forced to live in an authoritarian fascist hell, with just barely enough of the scraps to survive on to continue living as an exploitable cheap labour population for the 'white baas'. I believe in pluralism - the notion that all cultures can work together to create an inclusive egalitarian democratic system that benefits everyone while protecting each other's dignity. Therefore, according to my own beliefs and experiences, apartheid was bad. Edit 2: I realize what a technical hill this is to die on, but the point I'm trying to make is that you should be critical of governments that are democratic but nevertheless pass diabolically unlawful policy and grant authoritarian powers. A democratic government should have checks and balances to prevent the powers that be from passing laws which violate human dignity and freedom. Just because a democracy promulgates offensive deprivations of rights, doesn't detract from the fact that it was enabled by a democratic system. The mixed system under the current South African constitution is, in my opinion an excellent solution. In terms thereof, democratic powers are limitable at the discretion of the judiciary if such a limitation is justifiable i.t.o the Constitution's protection of human dignity, freedom and egalitarianism.

But a 'democracy' is how the apartheid government and their allies saw it - its systems were modelled off of the Westminster parliamentary democratic model. However, at times and in some respects the South African government could 'rule by proclamation' - such as via the powers granted to the President under 'states of emergency', or at any time over Natives/Blacks/Bantus via the Black Administration Act 38 of 1927. 'Ruling-by-proclamation' fits the definition of dictatorship, but, again, this was not the complete system of government. The National Party was never the only political party to vote for. The sad reality is that the National Party were just very good at attracting voters and manipulating (and violating) natural law to be exploited for their own ideals. It's terrible, but that's what happened. Remember, the USA has been a democracy since 1776 - but most African Americans and other American minorities only gained civil rights within the past 100 years. In some states, regardless of your complexion or culture, you weren't even allowed to vote unless you owned a certain amount of property - i. e: you couldn't vote if you were poor. Apartheid-era South Africa was deinitely a seperated and unequal stratified society - 'whites' lived in a democracy with a social net well-funded by the state, but 'non-whites' were forced to live in an authoritarian fascist hell, with just barely enough of the scraps to survive on to continue living as an exploitable cheap labour population for the 'white baas'. South Africa's majority didn't want apartheid. In 1948, a wrong-winner First Past the Post election gave it to them any way. When apartheid ended the country brought in Proportional Representation.

Apartheid laws still exist today for the MAJORITY in a fairly developed country - MALAYSIA ! Many many restrictions exists for the non Malay-muslim population including: access to education, scholarships, to govt. contracts, to govt. jobs, to owning land, to mandatory jobs / part ownership for the Malay-muslims in public listed companies. This has be going on for over 50 years ! Why no attention to this ? The non Malay-muslims never did anything remotely like Apartheid to them ! We had this imposed on us with the support of the Judeo-British colonialists. To be fair there is a new govt. so let's give them some time and the we see again.

Imagine if the Europeans had treated the Africans in South Africa as equals, and built a society that was equal and fair, what an absolute Utopia South Africa could of turned out. But instead they decided to treat Africans like 2nd class citizen or even like animals so to speak. They committed atrocities and massacres against several African tribes such as the Zulu and Xhosa, usually under false pretense, just simply to take their land and grow their sphere of influence. Apartheid was implemented to victimise, discriminate and persecute the Africans. Many blacks owning land in the cities were evicted to that affect, and what compensation did they receive? I agree two wrongs don’t make a right. But to act as if the current disproportionate spread of wealth and social imbalance in the country has nothing to do with its history, is quite rich and arrogant to say the least.

In most countries , the majority population rules over the minority ( Ex. Koreans are dominant in Korea and Chinese do not rule the Federal Government). South Africa was rare,because the 20% European Population ruled over 70% southern African, 6% coloured ( all biracial persons) and 4% Asians ( mostly from India) , that was like 1660-1994. In 2023, Southern Africans are 80% of the population ( they run the Parliament). Europeans are 9% of the population. Coloureds are 7% ( biracial persons). Asians are 4% ( mostly from India). Africans have run Namibia and South Africa since 1990 and 1994. It is good that both countries allow their majority populations to run the Federal Government!

Michele S 1948 was the fateful election year which toppled the pro-monarchy, pro-British, and less racist United Party under Jan Smuts (a Boer, ironically). His government had published a report advising the relaxation of such stratified racial policies, such expanding their employment rights, and he tried to call in support from non-Boer white South Africans, other minorities, and moderate blacks, as well as a goodwill tour by King George VI, but the Afrikaner establishment prevented it from paying off. After his defeat in the 1948 election, South Africa became a dictatorship under the ANP, starting a 46 year dictatorship by the Afrikaners, with the last obstacle, the monarchy being removed a referendum in 1960, which was restricted to only whites.
